I do believe things are looking up. It's amazing the difference a new friend can make.

Cooking is more difficult than Gong Su made it seem. One would think that tossing meat, spices, and vegetables into water would be as easy as it sounds, especially considering how bland some of those stews were. Though I suppose that was the ingredients' fault and not Gong Su's. There is only so much one can do with kangaroo. My efforts on the grill have been more successul than the stove, although I am certain that I have ruined one of our pots. Are there special pots one must buy to use over fire?

I think that I shall also purchase some books when I go out to procure a new pot. While this device is splendid, my eyes are starting to hurt. Plus I do think it would be splendid to actually hold a book in my own hands and read it myself. Are there any specific novels I should buy? I do not suppose that anyone would know where could find a copy of Philosophiæ Naturalis Principia Mathematica. I should like to buy it so that I can have one until Laurence comes as well with our copy.

It's weird to think about settling down anywhere but Haven, but I actually like it here. At least I don't have to worry about losing Audrey here

I think getting a job with the local PD helps with that. It's frustrating to be going through training again, but it feels good to be doing what I've been doing pretty much my whole life.

I'm trying to prepare myself so I can best teach contemporary literature as well as 'the classics'. I've been reading about those with homosexuality homosexuals in literature, and I'm rather surprised that there is a lack of said characters in children's literature. Even when one progresses to adult literature, there is a lack of those with homosexuality homosexual characters. I imagine there are many here who are homosexual identify with as homosexual that are not heavily identified in their source Canons as such. In contrast, there are a wide variety of books that discuss the Vietnam war, and the immigrant stories of Vietnamese who fled after the war. It's such a curious discrepancy, and I can't help but get the feeling that homosexuality isn't as accepted as I was led to early believe. I think the emergence of Hiv/Aids might have heavily contributed, though not having lived it, I can't be too certain.

Does anyone have any other insights on this?

Things have been relatively quiet over the last few weeks. Life is settling down. I have the best roommate ever. I've enjoyed spending time with him and settling into life here. I am growing to love this city - even if it's full of things that bother me in some fashion.

For those of us from books with films based upon our tales. How do you find them. I have seen three of my own, and not one gets the story quite right. More, they've been a tad overgenerous with my face while nowhere near capturing the radiant beauty of my Margeurite.

Still, if I can be vain, they make a good show.

Additionally, damn me if two months in and I've still not found a good tailor.

The lack of basic common courtesy is astounding. I had no less then a dozen people be needlessly rude to myself and my coworkers in under five minutes. All over trivial things.

Two days I have been in this place, and still it has not sent me back. What is the meaning of this? How dare that strange blue box rip me from my wife, my noble father, and my home!

Furthermore, how could it do such a thing? I am at a loss to explain it, or the craftsmanship that must be behind it. I should like to examine it, but I do not think that those who guard it so jealously would allow me to do so. It is a pity. Mere Men have not the intelligence or skill to understand the workings of such a device - they certainly have not the chance at understanding it as does the greatest craftsman of the Ñoldor! From what I have seen walking the streets of this foul and ghastly city, the crafts of men are far inferior to the work of my hands. Like the drawings of children, compared to the masters.

I also wish to know where in this place I can find access to a smithy? The oven in my room operates at pathetically low temperatures, and is absolutely useless to me.

My son, since last speaking to you, I have learned that you are indeed my child. My confusion is, of course, fully understandable, as such a thing as Time Travel has never been shown to be possible, even by Eru himself. This, too, is perhaps something the Valar selfishly hide from us in an attempt to keep us their pathetic thralls.

Nonetheless, I should like to meet with you at once. I hear there is a book that documents our story. Have you read it? I will be picking up a copy at the bookstore today.

For the first time in my life, I have walked out on a date.

I should have known better than to go out with anybody who would ask a woman out when she's at work. That's always a warning sign that a guy's selfish. Unfortunately, I once again let my good judgement get overridden by dry wit and a pretty smile, and accepted an invitation to lunch.

So I went to lunch with him today. I should've walked out the instant he ordered for me. Dude, you don't know me like that. And second, it's pretentious as fuck. But I thought, okay, maybe he's just old-fashioned. He opened the door for me on the way in, after all. A little courtesy can be nice sometimes.

Then, he proceeds to tell me about his job as an investment banker. And his apartment on the Upper West Side. And his award-winning purebred dachshund. And his stylist. And how he likes taking a chance on the crazy girls now and then. A little walk on the wild side, if you know what I'm sayin'.

I didn't even bother to fake food poisoning or a family emergency. That dude can just eat a whole bag of dicks, for serious. Word to the wise, if you're trying to get a crazy girl to bang you, don't use a Lou Reed reference that makes it sound like you think she has a penis. Oh, and don't imply she's crazy. Or talk about yourself non-stop. Asshole.

[info]findlight in [info]thedoorway

The works of men are truly to be commended!

Today I spent many hours in the bookstore, pouring over the various writings of Men. I found myself often moved to tears by the beauty of the writing, and by the love of the Second Born towards their world. There was a time I thought that all of creation would be marred by a terrible darkness, and perhaps, indeed, it has been, but out of that darkness men have found and created such beauty that I feel pride in having aided them. They certainly have added their own undertones and harmonies to the Music, and made it all the more poignant for their having lived.

And the music! In this store, they had a place where one could listen, and the amazing variety of song available in this world is...staggering. I shall never have time to listen to all of it that I wish, yet so very much of what I heard spoke to my heart.

I had great love for Men before, but now, after seeing their achievements, I raise my voice to Ilúvatar once again in praise of his creation.

So, I've finally gotten around to doing some research into my author and my... story. Apparently, not only is my life meant to be a part of the retelling of the epic Ulysses, but it's also considered to be one of the best books ever written. (According to New York Times archives). I'm not sure at all how to feel or if this means...

But...because I'm a part of something that was a retelling and considered to be the best example of writing ever penned... I suppose I'm interested if anyone here has found versions of themselves they like better -- or versions which are ridiculous or gross misinterpretations (which are considering correct interpretations) of themselves. Either in fanfiction, published works, made-for-television movies or whatever else.

This all came to mind when I came across this recently....HERE, which might illustrates my point. Apologies, Anne Shirley.

While it was possible to live off of one income back home, this isn't Arkansas or 1977. I love you and what you do, John, but a mechanic's salary just doesn't go as far these days and I have to keep you fed and properly clothed! I've been here for just shy of a month, which, if I'm reading the papers correctly, means that I'm about halfway through Mr. Stark's "grace period" with the generous $1000 stipend.

Now comes the hard part of job hunting. While I'm no stranger to hunting, I've never actually applied for a job. I was a part of the family business before I married, so I basically inherited my role. I can kill supernatural creatures, read and speak Latin, pick a lock, do laundry, disarm an assailant, and bake pies. I can turn on a computer, but I have no idea how to send a fax or how many words I can type a minute. Any suggestions for trying to pass as a modern woman?

Having spent more time at the tattoo parlor, I am struck by the grievous lack of judgement people have when it comes to choosing their tattoos. They are, in fact, on the scale of these disasters.

It's becoming increasingly more tiresome to enter a building and be stopped and searched, because of an alarm sounding at my presence. Unless, of course, the searcher is slightly more preoccupied and compensates me in some way, but that's only happened once in the dozen times I've set off the strange detector.

If this is what I have to look forward to with the rest of my stay in New York City, I'm tempted to only use my other attachments while in public.

I have seen and done a lot of things in my eighteen years, so it usually takes a lot to really leave me freaked. But can I just say that doing an all-day marathon of all four Paranormal Activity movies had to be the worst idea ever? The first one was the scariest, but they were still all way creepy. I jumped, I screeched, I hid my face with a blanket half the time.

And it wasn't because it was really scary or anything! But the way the cameras moved and just sitting there knowing something was going to happen, oh god oh god did it.

On the plus side, I think I can keep from sleeping with the lights on or something like that.

It's only been 3 or 4 weeks since I've been working and it already feels like a decade. Basically, working there is all of the following things:

- Children running around, knocking shit over and their parents not giving a damn to tell them to stop, but angrily telling an employee to screw off if they ask the kid not to do something nicely.
- Customers bitching about having to wait 5 minutes in line never mind that they have probably waited in line without bitching at the doctor's or in banks or in shopping malls or long lines to the bathrooms. And yet.. pharmacies are apparently where they should get their stuff within 5 seconds.
- People calling 2 minutes to closing and asking that we keep the store open because they need to drop off 3 prescriptions right away.
- Why does that cost 2.99? The sign says it's 2.89. I want it for that price! What? I need a courtesy card? Since when?? I'm not coming back here anymore! (Repeat in about a week when they return to get something else.)
- Kids crying when their parents don't get them that candy bar that they want, and screaming about how they hate them and wish they would die. Oh, yes, because that would get what you want, right away.

Repeat daily.

On the bright side... I get my money for cigs. Life is good.

TRIGGER WARNING: DISCUSSIONS of Rape Culture, Sexism, Trans-Phobia, Homophobia, Classism, Racism etc

Clarity is, I think, always the best policy. Today, people were somewhat shocked and offended when I implied that humans are born stupid, selfish little assholes and as they grow, while they think they become smarter and perhaps even believe they become less self-centred... more often than not, they don't. People are almost all assholes from birth until death, and I thought it might do everyone some good if I explained what I meant when I say asshole. This isn't a complete list, but I also think it would be almost impossible for most people to get through it without having to checkmark off a few things for themselves.

So as Bill Nye might say, Please... Consider the following:
