I am much relieved to have found myself some gainful employment. I am not the sort to be easy simply sitting around doing nothing. I was hoping to find a job on the water but I think I found something just as good. I am working for a man who is restoring a frigate. He claims to be a mere carpenter with an interest in such things but judging by the work he has done so far, he is a fine ship-builder and I have told him so.
Unfortunately he knows almost nothing about sail-making and rigging and the other important aspects of a ship and has hired me to take care of those things. He was especially excited when I explained who I was. He said I seemed like a fine sailor in the movies so I suppose I should thank the actor who portrayed me for getting that much right. The work will be good though and with any luck we might be able to give her a shake down cruise in the summer to work out what still needs to be fixed.
As I looked for work, I was however surprised to find that the sailing companies here in New York do not sail in winter. It's cold, to be sure, but no colder than it is in the waters around England. Still, ships are not the primary mode of transport these days so I imagine that explains much.
