I have been in this world for 8 months now. Well, 8 months and a few days. To those who are hoping to stay: look, there's hope! To those who want to leave: well, um, there's only really a few of us who are here, so there's hope for you too.

I apparently, was (and probably still am) one of those peoples who would prefer to stay. I really had nothing to keep me attached to my old world so, fresh start? Yes, please.

It was fucking tough though. Because you're in NYC, and there's not like I have a college degree or a high school diploma on hand that would get you into a good place to work. And the fact that places don't need more people slash hiring better people than you. It took me six months to finally find a place I can stay in. (Contrary to what you may think, no, not everyone is all "oh hey you look like so-and-so" or "you're that character and we'd love to have you", especially when we were just arriving and not many people knew about it.) But, in the end, hey, I got a job. It's not glamorous and the customers piss me off one too many times but I got something.

But I've grown to like this place, even with the occasional asshole here or there (because really, what place isn't like that), and the people that I hadn't expected to come here apparently are, so it's not so bad. I'm not particularly going anywhere with this but before I start sounding like a gigantic sap, I'm going to stop right here.

War Veterans Meeting

So I've got two announcements for you gents and ladies.

I've been in some talks with the folks over here at the Legion, (Post #398) because I thought we might get on well with those old boys and take up a few seats during their impromptu Jazz nights. With $5 beers and $8 dinners I really don't think a one of us should refuse -- so they're be expecting us to pop in from time to time. I know I plan to make it one of my usual haunts, no word of a lie.

Originally, I was thinking we could just go there for our Veterans nights, -- but, being a "refugee" and seeing that we're all from different backgrounds and battles, I though we ought to meet apart from the Legion, just so's we aren't imposing too much, and because I know not all of us fought in American wars.

With that in mind, I did some looking around, fell upon The Clover Club and thought that might be right for us. They take Reservations Sunday-Thursday, so I booked us in for April 11th.

Hope to see you.

I've decided I'm going to see Sharon Freeman tonight in Brooklyn. And I bought two tickets, just in case any She's part of the Jazz Festival, which I'm completely unqualified to talk about; someone asked me the other day whether that sort of music made me feel at home, and I hardly knew what to say. These days a year in one part of the world is a year in another - we're all remarkably present in 2013. It wasn't the same back then, and believe me, I knew it. There's nothing like hearing reports from across an ocean that make you suspect you're still loafing around somewhere in 1899. We thought we were terribly modern with our wireless and our telephones, but really, how can you be modern when you insist on taking two hours to dress for dinner?

At any rate. I'm going. I think it will be lovely. Or maybe it won't, but I'd like to see.

Oh, and I have an extra ticket.

May the force be with you, Molls.

Nice of them to beef up security the day after the entire city's swamped with neckbearded hooligans. Where were they yesterday, when I couldn't go outside without getting hit in the eye with someone's beer bong? Or last week, when that man with the saxophone followed me for an entire block and said he'd stop when I paid him?

Why the hell can't a person get a stun gun?

Now I've been thinking.

Seems quite a few of here have a war or two behind us. Now, I know things might be different for some folks, that their wars ain't ours, but I don't think that ought to matter a bit. I think what's important, if anything, is that we've a place. Maybe to talk, maybe to not, but certainly a place for all of us to get on together with those shared experiences, be them bad or worse.

So I'm supposing I'm proposing a veterans club, maybe find a nice smoking room that'll put us up monthly like.

I've started looking for work in the Bronx or Harlem. Those places sure have changed both. I thought maybe I'd get on all right as a mechanic -- but I don't think I'm near qualified to look at cars these days. I didn't know where to start first I lifted a hood. Still, I think cars is where it's going to be for me. I think that's best.

Don't know that I want to own one though, watching the traffic in this place. Seems more trouble than it's worth.

As an ambassador, one doesn't make a habit of dwelling upon the differences (never to say faults, of course) between one's hosts and one's home - nothing will make a man, be he diplomat, royalty or simple passerby, clam up so fast as pointing out that 'at home, we wear our hats this way,' or 'I must admit I prefer our own practice of' setting a table in some equally ridiculous and yet ever so slightly different arrangement. One learns to praise and only to praise, even when one's host is London, because the sensitive temperaments of the English are prone to immediate and severe inflammation at the merest suggestion that they may not quite be best at everything. And who can blame them? They've been told for so long that they are.

But I won't hold myself to the same standard now, as I've never heard of there being an ambassador to another time, and it's not as though I'm being paid for my labor or being returned home to report. So, allow me to lodge a small and no doubt unoriginal - how do you say - quibble:

There has always been cheap, relatively unhealthful food immediately available in cities for those for whom such things are convenient. Certainly in Paris and London, the two great urban areas with which I can claim any familiarity, a man has been able to purchase something drowned in butter or grease, some pastry or pasty, some sweet or lump of fat, for little enough money and with no more inconvenience than waiting in a line. But never in my life have I been subjected to quite so much indignity in the act of purchase itself - never before coming to New York have I been forced to tell a perfect stranger I wanted a McMuffin or a bacon and Gouda Artisan breakfast sandwich (where on earth do they keep the artisan?), or a Funk Meister (attempts to ascertain the meaning of this phrase have met with no success), or a Frisky Dog (indisputably an insult). The attempts of one merchant to differentiate himself from another have produced such a proliferation of ridiculousness that customers are forced to sacrifice some measure of dignity simply to acquire food. The customer must dance a silly little jig and make a fool of himself before anyone will consent to give him his money's worth. We are all idiots in the service of what we seem to be calling marketing.

Such is the stamp of capital.

Hello. I am T'Challa, King of Wakanda.

It is my understanding that I am not the only one who has been transported here against my will. Although the discovery that there are so many of us has done little to reassure me, I am pleased that our hosts have been generous enough to provide a residence.

Here I thought the light was green.

Guess I was wrong. Guess it was blue all the time, I just didn't notice at all.

Hello, everyone. My name is Virginia Potts. I'm better known as (and answer to) the moniker that Tony gave me many years ago, Pepper.

I wanted to take a moment to welcome you all to the Refugee Network. Tony Stark - as well as many others - created the network so you would have a safe space to talk without the prying eyes of the media. I'd like to give them a warm thank you for their hard work.

Some of you have been here for a while, and as of today, the Tesseract has given us more refugees than it has in the previous five months, and it's still going. I'd like to take a moment to thank the hard-working men and women of S.H.I.E.L.D. for their diligence and perseverance. Without their quick thinking when refugees began to appear, this would have been nearly impossible for any one of us to handle.

And on that note, Director Fury has asked me to pass along the message that they are in dire need for Administrative Staff to help with processing. Anyone who is interested can pass on a note to your Housing Assistant.

Speaking of, there should be one Housing Assistant per two floors (and in one case, three floors). Should you require any assistance, they should be able to help you. Potts Tower is not a new building, but we have gutted it, given it an ARC reactor for clean energy, a full service gym in the basement, an outdoor patio and pool area, and an entertainment area. We plan to utilize all of these areas in the upcoming holiday season in the hopes that it helps alleviate some of the melancholy of being without your families.

Once again, welcome to the Refugee Network and Potts Tower, and I look forward to getting to know you.

-Virginia Potts
