I trust I am using this correctly. It is quite an ingenious device though I do not understand how this message will get from here to everyone else. Nonetheless I feel it is a superior form of writing as the result is clear and readable, though it is slow. I imagine speed improves with continued usage?

Forgive my prattling. It was a means of testing this device and my ability for using it. I am Commodore James Norrington of the British Royal Navy, commander of the HMS Dauntless, lately based in Port Royal in the Caribbean. I must say that New York has changed greatly since the last time I was here. I confess to being rather taken aback by today's events and feel somewhat at a loss though I am grateful to those who have provided such generous refuge and assistance. It is very much appreciated.

A fellow man of the water. Welcome to the 21st century, Norry. I'm hoping they explained the whole 'from a movie' thing to you? If not, let me buy you a drink and tell you all about it.

Are you a fellow sailor? They mentioned a movie but I am afraid I missed much of it. Far too much information in far too short a time. I would appreciate a drink.

In a manner of speaking. Let's head down to Sam's. I'll explain movies first, then go from there. You're either going to be testing your alcohol tolerance or your information absorption tolerance, depending on how all the information suits you.

Very well though that does sounds rather ominous.

I feel a bit as if we ought to start a club for those of us originally from Britain. There seem to be rather a few of us. I'm Wesley Wyndam-Pryce. Welcome to New York.

Thank you, Mr Wyndham-Price. It was a bit of a surprise to find that New York was no longer an English colony. I suspect there is a great deal I must learn here.

Yes indeed, they got tired of us and threw us out. Odd that.

If you'd like anyone to brush you up on the last two hundred years of history I always did enjoy history in school.

That's rather ungrateful of them.

I would appreciate that very much. I suspect there are any number of pitfalls waiting for me in the days ahead.

Do you drink, Commodore Norrington? If so, I have found Sam's downstairs to have a tolerable selection of beverages, and I suspect you might find a drink useful as I catch you up to date.

I do as long as it is not rum. I would be delighted to join you.

I suspect they sell rum, but it is not the only thing they sell. You'll have options. I'll see you tonight perhaps? Around seven?

Welcome to New York, Commodore. I'm Barbara Gordon. I've been here for a few months now. I hope you're settling in all right.

Thank you, Miss Gordon. I am settling in as best as one can hope for in such a strange place. Though I suppose strange is not the correct term. Different might be a better choice of words.

I'm sure it's quite foreign at times, though, isn't it? If you need anything, let me know.

It is indeed. I should not be surprised that in nearly three hundred years that both people and places have changed yet it can be quite startling. Are you able to provide assistance with the many gadgets in my apartment? They did explain them too me but I fear many of the explanations were quite incomprehensible.

I could probably help out with that, yes. I consider myself pretty good with technology. And, well, gadgets.

Thank you, Miss Gordon. You are most kind. I have been able to determine the purpose of some of them but others still leave me baffled.
