[Private:]
The breeze shifted earlier. The wind pressed hard against my face as if trying to force me to understand that which I could not. Almost in the same way natives yell slowly at foreigners - as if it will somehow help them understand what is being said. In my bones I know this is an ill omen…perhaps I am simply searching for meaning in this world.

Though the keyboard now within my possession can hardly be compared to the piano left behind in Japan it feels nice to create music once again. I have been thinking about offering piano lessons, but Michiru really is the better teacher. I would love to race again. First I need a car...

Ugh.... apparently my show's back, which I am two weeks' late noticing since I've been working and I have a girlfriend. I'm not sure how I feel about it but avoidance seems to be the best way.

There are too many classes to take! I don't know which ones to take. I suppose it's just me overextending myself again. I have a tendency to do that. It's also weird that I'll be in Muggle classes...... I really wish I'd been able to finish at Hogwarts.

I don't know the last time I was somewhere this frigid. Perhaps when I visited my sister in Scotland, but even there, the air didn't seem to have such a nose-nipping and cheek-stinging quality to it. It is nice, however, not to hover around a fireplace to keep warm. These little conveniences, while still foreign and inconceivable, are certainly, well, convenient.

I wonder if there is any other gentleman here who might be interested in finding a suitable drinking establishment with me for this evening?

Hello. Would you like to visit the Metropolitan Museum of Art with me on Sunday? I feel as though I've perhaps not been as attentive a friend as I should be, and I would like to rectify that.

I was wondering if perhaps we could find time to discuss my future educational plans? I'd like to attend university this autumn, but I'm not entirely certain what requirements I've still yet to meet.

Thank you,

Mardi Gras is an interesting festival, and if my experience at the Village Pourhouse is any indication, I think I would like to see the spectacle that is Mardi Gras in New Orleans someday. Mr. Crane, thank you for allowing me to join you on Tuesday evening.

I kind of feel like the fact that I made it farther than my werewolf friends is something I should be proud of.

Either that or they just suck at stealth.

I found myself watching Captain Reynold's series over the weekend and this just stuck out to me:

"After the Earth was used up, we found a new solar system and hundreds of new Earths were terraformed and colonized. The central planets formed the Alliance and decided all the planets had to join under their rule. There was some disagreement on that point. After the War, many of the Independents who had fought and lost drifted to the edges of the system, far from Alliance control. Out here, people struggled to get by with the most basic technologies; a ship would bring you work, a gun would help you keep it. A captain's goal was simple: find a crew, find a job, keep flying."

Keep flying. I think there's so much contained within those two words. It's not just about keeping the ship up in the air and running. It's about taking care of your crew, assessing risks and acting in the best interests of the crew. A ship without her crew is nothing. She won't fly herself.

I've been spending a lot of time out at the ranch. It's been useful, to just focus on that. There really is nothing like hard labor to clear your mind of things. I suppose that's why we push the cadets so hard at the beginning. It allows you to focus. And really, when you slip in mud (or manure), it certainly jerks you out of your thoughts. And a week of mucking out stalls and remembering that no titles or ranks get you out of that can be a good thing. It's useful to settle down into the rhythm of the ranch again. (It doesn't hurt that the past few nights have been gorgeously clear and there's something about just staring up at the vastness of the stars (and what lies beyond) is incredibly calming.)

I've set up a workspace there - well, two. One where I can work on writing my history (histories?) of Starfleet - and I still need some more collaboration on that to make sure it's a well-balanced approach because I don't want this to just be one Captain's perception. - and the other as more of a tinker space. Mal had talked about getting Kaylee's copter up in the air and I haven't devoted much time to working on it. It's a bit of 'ancient' technology, coming from my time, but I've found some manuals, and it'll be an interesting challenge.

I think I might visit Greece soon. It is not home per se but it is the closest I can get to in this world.

FRIENDS + THE MARVEL UNIVERSES:
Two things. Of roughly equal importance.
  1. I need the name of a place that can deliver cupcakes and Orange Crush to the financial district after midnight. Discretion encouraged.

  2. I'm moving out of the tower at the end of April. Got a place lined up, making an offer, whole nine yards. It's in Nolita, making it a mere stone's throw away from Ferrara, but I'm not giving anyone my address until I get a sworn statement that you're not going to crash on my floor and eat my cannoli.

Avengers, expect a followup.

Another cold weekend it appears. Not that it's out of sorts with how Hogwarts was. I remember the numerous trips we made to Hagrid's for Care of Magical Creatures.

My side project is going ok, nothing to write home about - though I imagine Professor Sprout would be pleased with what I've accomplished.

I also have an interview for a job next week.

Realized this week that it's been near a year since I arrived here and I've more or less made sense of the changes from my time and this. In the time I've been here I've done things I never even imagined I'd do at home from ridin' vehicles that don't need horses to make them go, to flying up above the clouds to visit my home. I talk to folks by typin' the words in on a screen that makes them appear somewhere else - this still don't entirely make sense to me but if I think of it a bit like a telegraph that helps a bit. Foods so easy to come by here - the berries in the middle of December - not that they're anywhere as good as the ones we grow out in the rockies in July - but they're here and you can get'em if you want.

And it's been a good year. I've sold beds, tables, and chairs, and I've met folk that are the same sort I know from home - good folk with others interests in their heart.

And these are all good things even if I don't know quite why I'm here. Why me and not Michaela, or Matthew or Colleen or Bryan, or even Cloud Dancing. I miss the folk from home but I've got friends here I'd miss too, so I guess that's sort of what it's like when a new place begins to become home too. Never thought I'd say it, but this world might have a taste of it.

It's been such a long time since I had the chance to be excited for spring break, and here I basically... forgot it was even coming until today. Oops. Some of my classmates were talking about where they're going, and they asked me, and I just kind of stared at them blankly like, oh, right, that's a thing now, that's something I can do.

So I have no idea what I'll do, but now that I'm thinking about it, it feels really normal. I mean, don't get me wrong, I loved being part of the Power Pack and training to be an Avenger, I loved helping people and doing good, but I spent all of my teenage years doing that and not worrying about things normal teenagers got to worry about.

Like what I'm going to do for spring break.

Aisha, the patient who had the lucid episode on Saturday, had another one today. It lasted approximately seven minutes, but she wasn't able to give me much more information than her name. I've had her hooked up to a monitor since the last one, and I am confident that we will be able to tell when she's about to have another period of lucidity -- her readings jumped significantly prior to this one. With any luck, the next time she'll be able to tell us where she's from or who we might contact for her.

For a year I've maintained that I have no desire to return to Starfleet Medical on a permanent basis, and my brief time here at SHIELD has only strengthened that belief. I really don't think that I was challenged enough.

So I'm thinking about starting up my own X-Factor here. Obviously it won't be an all-mutant detective agency, but it's a start. Maybe we can do some bounty hunting on the side (that's for you, Wade).

I would need an office space. And money for the office space. And people interested in joining. Shit. That's a lot of stuff.
