Quick. Someone point me to the best and nearest bar in this place.

I've been noticing that other people are sharing their dresses over the network, so why shouldn't I?

I'm really happy with my choice! It's really easy to move around in and I LOVE the color on me!

Ladies! If there is a group getting together to get our hair done, let me know! I'd love to join!

[info]blossompuff in [info]thedoorway

I hope there will at least be respectable music at this stupid fucking piece of sh prom. I'm talking anything circa 1999 and below.

Why a prom. They're just lame and get destroyed by The dresses are always tacky and you know, who knows, it might catch on fire and end in a blood bath. But whatever. That's just me. My dress got torn I was dateless

[info]fiestyisabel in [info]thedoorway

I know that the Prom is generally a high-schoolers event, but making it open to all those here in the Tower was a lovely idea. It's just the thing to get people together and a perfect opening act to Spring. I look forward to the dancing and the dress. Although I've decided if we do not wish to stay, a night out under the stars will be just as nice. It's a fine excuse to put on a nice dress, some pretty jewels and enjoy the company of those here with us.

Besides. I cannot wait to see my darling in a Tux.

How many of the older adults are actually going to this thing? I mean, if I actually decided to check it out, will I be completely out of place in a room full of teenagers, or can I expect some people my own age to be there, too?

Of course, it IS an excuse to put on a pretty dress and dance, ain't it?

I was in Brooklyn yesterday, I stumbled upon the ground-breaking for the Phoenix Project's new building site. I remember seeing the flyers a few weeks ago, but I'd forgotten that it was today. I thought it was incredible to see other refugees from out tower getting involved and I commend your efforts enormously. I think it's incredibly important to establish communities here and do for others what we have been lucky enough to receive ourselves.

I intend, next weekend, to volunteer at the site. The Project seems to have done a great deal of work already, since December and I am very pleased that they seem to want our (us displaced) involvement. If anyone would like to go with me, or return with me next weekend -- I'd love to have the company and I'm sure they'd appreciate the help.

possible tw: mention of bullying.

90-odd years ago, a very brave, deceptively small Irishwoman gave birth a worryingly tiny baby. She was informed that his chances of survival were small and that she would do well to shield her child from every environmental danger that she could. She did no such thing. As a matter of fact, upon being released from the hospital, she promptly took her infant son to a park with a dozen other children with God knows how many diseases. I was too young to understand it, but it would be her first two lessons to me: "you can't hide from the world just because it'll hurt you," and "a life lived cautiously isn't a life worth living."

When I was five, I celebrated my first Mother's day in her lap having my lip stitched up because a bigger, older kid had tried to steal the paper flower I'd folded for her. By the time she patched me up, it was crumpled and torn and muddy, but she held it to her heart and told me that it was the most beautiful flower she'd ever seen.

After my father came back from the first World War, she was effectively forced to raise me alone -- before and after his death. She took three jobs to support me during arguably the harshest economic depression that our country has ever known. No one, least of all me, would have blamed her if she'd said that it was too much and left me to the state like many other good mothers were forced to. But against the odds, she managed to survive long enough to see me graduate high school and even put me through a year of art school when the money would have better spent on her own well-being. She passed months later to a case of pneumonia that she just couldn't shake, but the last words she said to me were "Don't give up. Don't ever let anyone tell that you can't be who you want to be." Those were the words that I held close when I tried to enlist the following year, knowing full well that I would be rejected for a dozen reasons.

It was that sense of perseverance that she instilled in me that made me who I am today. If not for her, Colonel Phillips would have never overheard me passionately pleading my case to the recruiter, and I would have never been selected for Operation: Rebirth. Dr. Erskine may have created the Serum, but "Captain America" was born in those fights in the back alleys of Brooklyn -- and in the arms of the woman who patiently patched me up every time and always made me go to school the next day.

Thanks, mom. I don't know if you're looking down on me in this world, but I'm sure as hell looking up at you.

TW: death and pregnancy issues

The celebration of motherhood is nothing new, certainly, although the emphases seem to have changed. In my day, when virtue in its civic form was having a great vogue, the importance of mothers as molders and shapers of young citizens was paramount. No republic can hope to survive unless the inheritance of duty to its founding principles can be assured, and mothers were entrusted with that all-important transmission.

My wife died, like so many women did and I have no doubt still do, in childbirth. My daughter was therefore raised largely by servants and one or two neighbors and as a result was saddled with their provincial ideals I have, of course, always wondered how she might have been different had she been able to enjoy her mother's influence. It's speculation that is by its nature ineffective, and more than a little melancholy, but perhaps important in that we always should consider how we take care to train up the next generation.

All my Mother's Day rituals are sort of moot here. I got started on my lemon meringue and then threw it all in the trash. It's not salvageable. It's really glaring here, so I'm not even going to bother. And my mom is this famous celebrity here who's still alive. As I said. Glaring.

I'm not sure I know what to do here. Shed labels? Become my labels? Get my picture taken in the subway at 3 AM while all you're really trying to do sleep some until you get to your stop and then hearing that it couldn't be Kurt Hummel because he'd be in bed by now? (Yes, I saw that on twitter - RUDE) Get pointed out by tourists at the drop of a hat and try to plaster on a fake smile so that they can take a picture with you? Unwittingly come back to your home in Williamsburg when you're too tired to think straight? Wait until December so that I can finally do my auditions for my shortlist of schools? Stare at my coffee all day and glare at dust bunnies? Celebrate my nineteenth birthday twice over? Get told off at the drop of a hat because you don't like my show? Lead a second life you're not even going to remember when you go back?

So sorry I'm not giggling and sashaying away. I'm not in the mood.

I'm going back to bed. Way too early. But happy Mother's Day to those who celebrate it.

It has come to my attention that a rather large percentage of the people here were around during WWII at least once. And of the people who were around during WWII, a surprisingly large number of you have, at some time or another, had run-ins with Nazis.

Now, I realize that there is already an organization for war veterans generally speaking, but I think that this ignores a rather large subset of the population who made a contribution to the war effort that did not necessarily involve joining the army. As such, I would like to present to you:

The Society for People who Have Punched Hitler
(Or Have Otherwise Made a Personal Contribution to His Demise.)

(This may be opened up to those who have punched other evil dictators and/or psychotic despots, but let's start with Hitler and see where it takes us.)

This is, of course, still open to army veterans, but it will not be open only to army veterans. Rory and I once locked Hitler in a closet after accidentally saving Rory punched him in the face, and I think this contribution is also worthy of recognition. Much like the (admittedly greater) contribution of the lads from Operation Valkyrie, or the ones from Inglorious Basterds.

For the purposes of this society, being friends with the android who killed Hitler is sufficient for admission. As is, for example, melting the faces off a band of Nazis with the Ark of the Covenant. Hypothetically speaking.

Inquire within.
