I really dislike winter. It's cold and wet and the holidays so goddamn miserable. Case in point? New York City drivers are still the biggest jerks on the planet, especially the cabs. What part of, "I'm walking here" don't they get? Also? Black sludge all over my boots isn't the way to get a good tip, buddy.

I have to say, the fans of the show I come from have to be some of the creepiest and the most annoying people I have ever met. This obsession with the supernaturals is not healthy.

Speaking of creepy, some kid left their doll by the elevator.

My name's Audrey Parker, and I'm the counselor for the Potts Tower Youth Center. I realize that just a few of you know me, but I wanted to take this time to introduce myself and give you a feel for who I am. Most of us have some sort of canon we came from - be it books or television or movies - and I am no different. I'm from a TV show called Haven, which isn't very widely watched. I'm pretty grateful for that, to be honest. I'm sure Duke would be having a fit. I miss him A lot There's not much to tell about me, mostly because I'm not really me so much as different people every time I arrive in Haven. I have a son I've never really met, but I'm trying to find.

I was an FBI agent until I got to Haven and started helping the Troubled. The Troubled are... they're people with supernatural afflictions. It's usually brought on by trauma, and it's usually a trauma that ties into their Trouble. Case in point? One of my first cases in Haven... This guy was in a car accident and his wife drowned in freezing water and sustained serious brain damage to the point that she had to be put in a care facility. He was so guilt ridden that it triggered his Trouble. When he played music - he and his wife were musicians - he could make the mentally unstable sane again. The downside was, any sane person who hears the music becomes mentally unstable. That kind of thing. I was good at it. I'd never call it a job, because it was way too personal for me, but I knew the moment I first helped someone that it was what I was meant to do.

Probably can see where this is going. I know that I'm employed by the PTYC, but I wanted to say that if anyone else needs someone to talk to or just to listen to, someone who doesn't know your story or someone unbiased, I'm here. You can reach me at [Number here] or my email address is: aparker@pottstower.com. There's no shame in needing someone to talk to.

I made the mistake of doing some reading into the field of current plastic and reconstructive surgery techniques. I've never read about anything more barbaric in my life. I don't see anything wrong with somebody wanting to change his or her appearance, but letting somebody else, even a medical doctor, slice and dice your face to accomplish that goal is absolutely insane. Wait until advances in cellular regeneration are made.

That being said, here's to hoping the weekend can only get better from here.

I found myself in a nail salon today and I think that I may have gotten carried away with the selections of colors on the wall. I chose red, but now looking at them... I'm not certain if I enjoy having them painted or not. I feel like it looks odd.

I happened upon a shop called Tribeca Treats today. The truffles must be crafted by angels. They tasted like pure joy must taste. The truffles are very good. And the ice cream sandwiches. My gods, why has no one thought of this before? Ice cream, inside biscuits. With sprinkles. Chocolate sprinkles! Ice cream sandwiches are also nice.

Miss Macready,

My name is Susan Sto Helit. While you are on this side of the Tesseract, I will be your curriculum advisor. That means I will assist you with choosing courses to continue your education while you are in this world. I will also be in contact with your guardian Mr. Parker about your educational progress.

I would like to meet with the two of you for a discussion of your previous educational experience on Monday afternoon. Would a bit after noon suit your schedule?

Sincerely,
Miss Susan

It would seem that my primary profession will indeed allow me to earn my own keep in this world. One of the young ladies who recognized me at the museum contacted her father, who has a number of business interests in the United States, and his representatives have in turn contacted me to engage my services as a security consultant.

I must admit that I find the prospect intriguing. My efforts have been largely directed to assisting my stepfather in his own business these past few years, but there, I was obliged to maintain the illusion of being a good deal younger and less experienced than those around me. Here, that illusion will be more difficult to maintain. It may be enough of a challenge to fill the days until I return home.

Okay, New Year's Resolution. Are you ready? (I know it's a couple of days early, but I think it's okay, isn't it?)

Resolution: To love every second of being Mrs. Clark Kent. Every. Single. Second.

Too simple, though, isn't it? Nah. Some years, you know you just need to enjoy them for the sake of being a new beginning.

I attempted to do something I haven't done in years today, and that is stay in and watch hours of TV. And yet, I couldn't find anything on. Which means I ended up with the "difficult" choice of a marathon of Real Housewives of NY or a marathon of Law & Order. I thought choosing the Real Housewives would make me less depressed by humanity, but after four hours, I'm not so sure.

I'm rather pleased to have been able to find a job that does not involve teaching and given that my new employer has not required any formal credentials beyond a rather arduous 'audition' that lasted most of the day, I feel I ought to promote his restaurant. It is called Vervain and is located not too far from the tower. The cuisine is something the owner calls Modern Continental. It's a rather elegant place.

I shall be working as a chef and I start in the new year. It's an interesting position. I have always had a knack for cooking though I have not often indulged given I have spent most of the year at Hogwarts and I am not foolish enough to insult the house elves by refusing their cooking. It is not that much different from brewing potions. The same attention to detail is required and it allows the same sort of freedom for experimentation.

I had expected a certain amount of animosity from the existing kitchen staff but apparently the fact that I am well and truly able to multitask with magic and my own two hands and thus ease their workload has endeared me to them. Be still my beating heart. Still, they possess an amusing level of sarcasm that I enjoyed so I believe we will get along.

Not that I will be giving up my potions. The lack of a magical community and magical plants and creatures for ingredient means a large number of the potions can't be made but I intend to do some experimentation and see whether there are ingredients in this world that can replace the magical ones, possibly in conjunction with the use of magic.

New Year's is a concept somewhat lost to me. A particular date is not requirement to change oneself. In fact, it is a hindrance, because it implies a start and a stop. A significant change should be encompassing if it is to be meaningful.

I do love that song that the Living sing, though - Auld Lang Syne. A wistful tune for the holiday season.

You had asked for literature selections. You cannot go wrong with:

Hendregadredd manuscript: A collection of Welsh poems dating back to 1282
The Romance of the Grail: One of the many romances dealing with stories of the Holy Grail; it fits in neatly with Arthurian canon
The Divine Comedy: Though I assume you have already read it, given your interest in Old Jack. If you wish for additional insight with the medieval (or rather, proto-Renaissance) language, please let me know.
Liberality and Prodigality: A morality tale; a bit dry but historically relevant as it showcases how the character of Justice is regarded less as a theological ideal and more of an enforceable mundane law.
The Second Shepherds' Pageant: A play, but well-worth your time as it is very-much removed from the stoic sternness one might associate with the nativity. In fact, it's rather bawdy.

If you have difficulty obtaining copies of the above, please let me know and I will see if I can provide them. My library did not come through the Tesseract, but I am confident that that is little matter.

[info]unaskedquestion in [info]thedoorway

So I've been spending the day reading DC comics to see what exactly sort of background and character references I've actually given the NYPD. And it's kind of weird seeing how some people interpret your life on the printed page. I mean, a little scarily accurate, but still just a snapshot. But you know, even if I'm reading a comic about people I know, I still can't really get into comic books.

Anyway, I need a break from this nerd shit, so let's play a game.

If most of us are from what this universe interprets as comics and television and the like, then that means other shows and books and movies could be real and come here. The question is who would be the worst person for the Tesseract to bring here? Hypothetically. And don't go with your enemy from home, because that's boring. Go with like Scrappy Doo.

Also if DC stands for Detective Comics, do they really need to call themselves Detective Comics comics?

I can barely remember the last time I thought the start of a new year was something worth celebrating. For a long time, another year passing was just another reminder of how long we'd been on the run, another reminder of how long it'd been since the war began. After we settled on our Earth, I lost nearly all sense of time passing. I counted the days at first, but soon enough I realized there was no frakking point when I was the only one around. All that mattered was night and day, nothing more.

Monday will be interesting. Looking forward to it. I hear this city has the best party.

I had a new experience at work today. One customer inquired after my flexibility and coordination. It's nice of people to be interested in that. I am glad it is visibly noticeable in my waitressing. I'm getting better, Sam! The customer said so. I'm not as coordinated as they asked. I am not sure about flexibility. I haven't tried. I certainly couldn't accomplish that feat in motion, which accompanies such acts.
