Sherlock Holmes and the Adventure of the Three Hackers.

[Joan Watson]
I was contacted this morning by a Professor Engelbert MacFadyen, Astrophysics and Cosmology professor in the Physics department of NYU. It seems his office has been ransacked and a number of his computer files tampered with, deleted or obviously copied.

As you already know, the world of academia is as cutthroat and ruthless as organised crime. Myself and Professor MacFadyen believe he was attacked because of his work on the Ecliptic alignment of cosmic microwave background anisotropy. He believes that another professor in his department is trying to sabotage his work and claim the research as his own. I don't know yet if his claims have merit or if he's simply paranoid - it is midterm season after all, and I wouldn't be surprised if a student wasn't just breaking in to try and change a score or submit a late paper, but perhaps you and I should take a look?
[Wasp (Lisbeth Salander)]
How familiar are you with the diagnostics of the University of New York's internal computer network systems?

Voyager 1 has left the solar system.

Oops, no it hasn't.

I think we could settle this with the headline "Voyager 1 Has Gone Really Fucking Far."

Hand all of my personal information over to another branch of government to vote for the lesser of two evils? Why don't you just shoot me in the head while you're at it?

Cut for Images, not filtered )

On June 25th, the district of Paris so lovingly committed to canvas in those paintings above was attacked, the bomber and nine civilians died, many were wounded and for many more still -- gone are the days when les Batignolles was a peaceful, quiet neighbourhood cloaked in the culture and warmth of those who lived and worked there. Batignolles is now a battlefield. It is a place where people lost their lives in another struggle against injustice. It is a battlefield where once again the lives of individuals become expendable in the face of tyranny.

I entreat you to not leave these men, women and children to die in vain. Stop this senselessness. Do as and what you can for this victims of these cowardly attacks. Rise against those who rule by fear, stand -- and if you cannot help bring him to justice than take the hand of your neighbour and do for them what you would have someone do for you because there is no better way to undo fear than with compassion.

Tomorrow, you will celebrate this country. For some of you, it is and has always been your home -- for those like me, it is a new but warm and welcoming place that I have grown to love already, in my months here. But tomorrow, as you raise your glasses to toast the United States, remember that she is a country not defined by her leaders, or her armies, her governments or her churches -- but by each person and every person -- rich, poor, of any nationality or religion, clergy or criminal.

Take their hands.

There's nothing more satisfying than nailing an asshole who's plotting to permanently silence his mistress.

Well, almost nothing.

I understand that I don't have the touchstones (in this world) to recognise or respond to potential threats in the way that some of the residents of this tower -- particularly if these residents have 'super powers' and are accustomed to battling overblown rhetoric and violent imagery with any regularity -- but I do know a terrorist when I see one. I do understand what it means to be a connoisseur of fear and to have such self-aggrandised delusions regarding oneself that they overtake all of the airwaves ...

But -- hear me out, here.

There is a point. As much as I rail against being called a lamb, there is a purpose to making this society think on its sins. I would hazard to say that this person will get there eventually. I hope it's sooner rather than later.

Still and yet. We've every reason to listen.

Perhaps.

Money is nice. Alcohol is better. Since I now have the benefit of a job and very limited expenses, I'd like to blow some of that cash on a one-way ticket to inebriation. I'm seeking a departure from my usual fare, so I'm taking suggestions. Act now and you can have the imitable honor of playing a part in my weekend celebration.

But don't say Lagavulin. It tastes like cat urine.

Polarizing ideologies still grip my country. People still take to the streets to protest and sometimes they take their lives as a symbolic act.

My fellows and I - we never wanted to die - but knew when the time came that to give in and lay down our weapons would be a betrayal of the principles we fought for. It is very interesting to see the way in which revolution re-invents itself through the years.

I wish the very best to Vincent and Bruno.

"The Angel and the Devil play a game on an infinite chess board. The Angel is a generalized chess piece that occupies a square on the board. In each turn, the Angel can move to any square that is reachable from his current square in k chess King moves (but the Angel doesn't need to step on the intermediate squares). k is called the Angel's power. The Devil does not have a position on the board. In each turn, the Devil may eat any square on the board, and from that point on, the Angel is not allowed to land on that square. If the Devil manages to trap the Angel, i.e. get the Angel into a position where all the squares that the Angel might fly to are eaten, the Devil wins the game. The Angel wins if he is able to fly to uneaten squares indefinitely.

For any given k, there must exist either a strategy that guarantees the Angel to win, or a strategy that guarantees the Devil to win. The Angel Problem is to decide whether for some large enough k, there exists a winning strategy for the Angel."

I read an article in the NYT that suggests thefts are on the rise and have a direct correlation with fluctuations in the power grid ... is not this altogether fascinating? If I but could study this T Fascinating from an objective standpoint, certainly. Smarter minds than mine there are none, I assure you have risen to the task, I am sure.

Otherwise, the rights of people are being violated and all you can discuss is prom, it makes me want to revolt and I am sure that the police force has their hands full dealing with it. Seems unfair, given our social status, that we do not seek to help as much as we are able. After all, we all have very specific talents. My pedantic speeches stop burglars in their tracks.

  • France approves same-sex marriage.

  • Protests regarding the decision sparked violence.

A less exciting tale: I am now out of the hospital and safely installed in this very 'high-tech' tower. I have a cane (though there will not be too much walking just yet) so beware, lest I use it.

I like computers. My year of origin is 2006. The current year is 2013. I'm not typing this on Internet Explorer, so obviously things have changed.

I'd like to hire someone to catch me up. When I say "computers," I'm not talking about checking e-mail and surfing the web. If you don't know how to write a program, it's probably not going to work out between us. If you're one of those people that wants to bond with your clients on a spiritual level, it's definitely not going to work out between us. If you know your shit and do your job and don't act like an asshole or talk to me about my inner chi, we won't have a problem.

    Thanks.
