I am only beginning to grasp the vaguest notion of how far medicine has come. Truly, there is no comparison. What might have wiped out entire villages is cured with a tablet smaller than a grape. Better than leeches at any rate.

As if that wasn't enough, I learned today that the earth revolves around the sun and not the other way around. Remarkable.

After looking at a long list of events going on in the city in just 2013, I've reached a conclusion: damn, I need to get out more. You'd think someone who grew up here all her life would have done nearly everything there is to do at least once, right? Yeah, not so much. I haven't even been on a Manhattan helicopter ride (for a good reason, though.. that's over a hundred bucks for just 10-15 minutes). So, I think that's going to change.

Incidently, the one thing at the top of the list of things to do after this semester ends is something I've already done. But it doesn't hurt to suggest it. The Museum Mile Festival. If any of you were not here last June to see it, that would be my first suggestion to anyone, particularly if you're the arts-and-music type of person. Plus... free public admissions to the museums! (Is my nerd showing too much?)

Filtered to Ben:
So guess who has basically a free day tomorrow morning because of a professor canceling class and still no working espresso machine because of her reluctance to smack and kick it.

While the art store is always exceedingly peaceful, the morning shift is downright worshipful. The sun bars in through the windows warming the stock room and I, perched on one ladder or another, catalog and fill the shelves with what will one day be the stuff of other worlds. Even the cabs are quiet - not yet filling the street with the ire - and if I stand still, I can hear the doves calling to one another in the rafters. Maybe even a sparrow who trills, waiting for his beloved to return to the nest.

As it is, I am exceedingly prone to enjoy my morning shifts. I did not experience such peace in Sibleys - always the hawking of wares, there - but perhaps I have a comparable experience. Mist (or phosgene - but let's say mist) hung on the trenches those early spring mornings. Before the Morning Hate - just after being roused for inspection - the thrushes would swarm the pitiful trunks of the trees that stood sentinel in No Man's Land. Sometimes, I'd close my eyes and listen to that song and imagine myself somewhere else.

Home in Shropshire, maybe. Or in some Thracian glen. I even imagined myself as John on the Heath, waiting for Fanny to come home. I never imagined an art supply store in New York City. Sometimes, we've got to be prepared to be surprised.

But really I'm writing to ask all of you if you received (or saw) the flier inviting we refugees to a charity gathering at a church? A dark haired woman was handing them out ... I saw her in Sam's when I stopped to pick up lunch. She seemed nice, if a bit circumspect.
“The reason is that all you know about me is what I have written so far; it has nothing to do with what I want to do next, because I don’t know, either.”

I have been indulging myself on architectural tours and art museums and yet there is still an seemingly endless supply of new places to explore. While many of the styles and subjects are strange to me, there is no denying their beauty. It might not all be to my personal taste, but this city is truly blessed to have so much to see.

I'd heard a number of various things involving Renaissance Faires since I first arrived in New York; however, this is the first I've seen of Medieval Times. It was mentioned to me recently and I was told that it was an enjoyable time. It doesn't certainly appears to be interesting. I find myself particularly curious of the jousting competition. If any of my students were interested, I could look further into the location and its pricing; we could possibly organize to see a show at a later date. It would be beneficial to view a joust in person. Any one else interested is more than welcome to come along. Or if you would prefer to go alone, I shall place the link at the end of the post.

I've always loved this time of year. It is a season of endless possibilities and the chance for new growth. Having a career was never a real possibility in my time, but this is a new world. I have accepted a position teaching for the students of Potts Tower. My subjects will include Italian, Spanish, Etiquette and Classical Dance. To those brave enough to share this journey with me, I can assure you that it will be interesting.

If there are any adults who wish to study any of these subjects, I would be honored to offer my assistance. For those in need of a tutor in Latin or classical Greek, I also offer my services. You never know when it will come in handy.

I don't know this was going to happen. I was only walking by, but the choir and the incense.

Christus factus est pro nobis obediens
usque ad mortem, mortem autem crucis.

Propter quod et Deus exaltavit illum et dedit illi nomen,
quod est super omne nomen.

The lights went out, candle by candle. The flickering made my nauseous. The noise made my heart nearly burst and the silence... I felt nothing in the silence, but there it was. There it all was, nearly every bit unchanged as I remember it.

What have I done?

There is a restaurant called Fazoli's, they advertise Italian cuisine, but I have eaten of their food, and I say they are liars of the highest order.

It’s a strange thing knowing how you’ll die. I expected more dread at the thought, but it’s oddly comforting in a way. If history tells it accurately, I will pass during the delivery of my eighth child. I cannot imagine having so many. There are worse ways to die, I suppose. The Spartans thought death by childbirth as noble as death in battle. If only I was Spartan.

I miss my son. I know I would not want him in this place, but it does little to ease the ache.

The water in the shower is no longer warm. What else can be done in this place for amusement or entertainment?

[info]onceaborgia

I admit I know next to nothing about this world, but this thing you call a shower is nothing short of a miracle.

What a truly remarkable place. I have never seen such an overabundance of girth green. I must admit I am still wrapping my head around the idea that this is real, but the gracious gentleman who greeted me when I arrived was very patient in explaining it to me. He even helped me understand how to use this little device.

Despite the introduction, I know that the majority of this world is still foreign to me. Is there anyone here who is willing and capable of helping me understand it? I would like to know more about the customs of this land before I cause unintended offense.

Apologies, I forget myself already. My name is Lucrezia Borgia, sister of Cesare Borgia who arrived here a few days ago. I'm sure it will be a pleasure to meet all of you.

Hello, everyone. My name is Virginia Potts. I'm better known as (and answer to) the moniker that Tony gave me many years ago, Pepper.

I wanted to take a moment to welcome you all to the Refugee Network. Tony Stark - as well as many others - created the network so you would have a safe space to talk without the prying eyes of the media. I'd like to give them a warm thank you for their hard work.

Some of you have been here for a while, and as of today, the Tesseract has given us more refugees than it has in the previous five months, and it's still going. I'd like to take a moment to thank the hard-working men and women of S.H.I.E.L.D. for their diligence and perseverance. Without their quick thinking when refugees began to appear, this would have been nearly impossible for any one of us to handle.

And on that note, Director Fury has asked me to pass along the message that they are in dire need for Administrative Staff to help with processing. Anyone who is interested can pass on a note to your Housing Assistant.

Speaking of, there should be one Housing Assistant per two floors (and in one case, three floors). Should you require any assistance, they should be able to help you. Potts Tower is not a new building, but we have gutted it, given it an ARC reactor for clean energy, a full service gym in the basement, an outdoor patio and pool area, and an entertainment area. We plan to utilize all of these areas in the upcoming holiday season in the hopes that it helps alleviate some of the melancholy of being without your families.

Once again, welcome to the Refugee Network and Potts Tower, and I look forward to getting to know you.

-Virginia Potts
