I know the last few weeks have been tense, to put it lightly, and it doesn't look like that will change any time soon. I've asked a lot of you, and most of you've risen to the occasion when the world has needed help. That isn't going to change now. Our people still need help, and HYDRA's still out there. This doesn't end now.

It is with great regret that we are known as a terrorist organization in the eyes of the public today. All the past Directors of SHIELD have acknowledged that our goals have always been the same: protect those who could not help themselves -- a shield, if you will. Some may disagree with our methods, and we will account for them in Senate hearings. Today marks the beginning of the end for the Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement and Logistics Division.

To those of you who have the misfortune of serving under me, please know that my strict tactics made for a smooth running operations with as few casualties as were possible. They were not personal. All of those lost over the years weigh heavy on my heart, but I know that they gave their lives in service of this country and what this organization stood for. I have struggled with the knowledge that HYDRA infiltrated our ranks for as long as they did, but I have no doubts that we will rise from the ashes like the phoenix.

Today may mark the beginning of the end for SHIELD, but for many of us, it also brings the end of our beginning. We will not cower, but we will stand up for what we believed in. We will accept the consequences of our decisions. We will move forward without regrets. I promise you that SHIELD will not die here and now, but become something bigger than it was before.

As the late, great Director Fury said, "a man can accomplish anything when he realizes he's a part of something bigger. A team of people that share that conviction can change the world." That is what SHIELD has always been, and what we will continue to be, no matter the outcome.

[The light from the torch tucked into Fitz's hand helped him navigate to the hard line as it stood situated in the currently-vacant bay. He swapped it to his mouth, keeping the wires illuminated while both hands plucked and reconfigured wires. This was a cake walk; if not for some slightly unpolished motor skills, he could've even done it all in the pitch black. All that was left was checking for the tone that signaled a connection -- which buzzed back to his ear the moment he lifted the receiver.

"Yes!" was kept to a whisper. The phone itself was turned over, then, and Simmons number plugged in as it was known by rote. He couldn't help that his heart skipped a beat. Telling himself that it was due to sneaking around on the Bus didn't completely work. Telling himself that it was due to Simmons being stationed back in the Hub only covered part of it, too. She'd be able to get the lab's documentation on Skye's blood for their joint research if anyone could. The rest... well, this wasn't the time to deal with that.

We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Director Nick Fury. Director Fury was shot last night, and succumbed to his wounds at 01:03 EST.

It is impossible to imagine SHIELD over the past four decades without also imagining Nick Fury. Director Fury was a principled man of unparalleled talent for espionage. Reinhard Gehlen of the BND once said that if Nick Fury had been born ten years earlier, the Cold War would have ended 25 years sooner and it's believable. Director Fury stood as a titan over the field of modern intelligence. But Director Fury liked to say that a man could only accomplish great things when he realized he was a part of something bigger than himself. Director Fury took an active role in the recruitment, education, and personal mentoring of countless agents and played a personal hand in the development and maturation of many of SHIELD's successes in recent years, including publicly, the Avengers Initiative.

He will be impossible to ever truly replace.

However, SHIELD must move forward. The World Security Council and SHIELD leadership have named Secretary of Defense, Alexander Pierce of the Triskelion as Interim Director of SHIELD pending appointment of a permanent Director.

Following up on Director Fury's post, a few timely reminders:

• If you become aware of a threat to the city, world, or even just an apartment building with a supernatural or extraterrestrial origin OR ties to any paramilitary or terrorist groups, you are required as a SHIELD agent to report it to a CO through the proper channels.
• The badge you carry symbolizes an oath you took to this world and its defense through this agency. If your friends and hallmates do not understand that, perhaps you should be questioning if their interests are anything more than self-serving egotism before SHIELD questions yours.
• This network is a privilege, at times a rare advantage, but first and foremost it and Potts Tower are a public forum packed with not only one of the highest residential populations of SHIELD agents in this hemisphere, but also a startling number of civilians. The same tenets of compartmentilization of intelligence apply to it as they do to any other facet of your life. I should not have to say not to discuss the existence or details of your work on the open network. Remember that just because people live next door to you does not mean they're trustworthy.
• Also, to whomever posted the flyer about their kittens on the 12th floor break room's cork board, if they are on this network, I have removed it. Do not repost it. That is hardly an appropriate use of SHIELD communication space or resources.
