Having been provoked by today's observation of 'Flag Day' to spend rather too much time perusing the historical development of the French tricolor, I have to say that among the many (some of them rather specious) explanations for the final product, this one is, by far, my favorite:

And I've found this website endlessly entertaining - and educational, of course. For a more multinational celebration. Everyone ought to know his flags.

I've need to say, managing one's finances was certainly much simpler in the 18th century, and there I had significantly more to handle on both England and the Continent with only a network of courriers, but between the inexplicable forms required for taxation and the unpersonable agents.

But t'would seem working is as complicated. What's the general concensus on unions? I'm afraid I'm a bit out of timeframe for them unfamiliar with the concept and while they seem harmless enough--even beneficial say, seems the practical opinion on them's a bit more divided.

Why has not one soul seen fit to inform me about this Game of Thrones program. I saw the mention of it in the news and viewed it in our rooms. Scoundrels and cowards they are. I had no idea mortal reality television was so distressing. And people say the Gods are cruel.

Young Loki, my apologies for slaying the television but it had served its use.

ooc note: possible spoilers for Game of Thrones in comments!

Polarizing ideologies still grip my country. People still take to the streets to protest and sometimes they take their lives as a symbolic act.

My fellows and I - we never wanted to die - but knew when the time came that to give in and lay down our weapons would be a betrayal of the principles we fought for. It is very interesting to see the way in which revolution re-invents itself through the years.

I wish the very best to Vincent and Bruno.

TW: death and pregnancy issues

The celebration of motherhood is nothing new, certainly, although the emphases seem to have changed. In my day, when virtue in its civic form was having a great vogue, the importance of mothers as molders and shapers of young citizens was paramount. No republic can hope to survive unless the inheritance of duty to its founding principles can be assured, and mothers were entrusted with that all-important transmission.

My wife died, like so many women did and I have no doubt still do, in childbirth. My daughter was therefore raised largely by servants and one or two neighbors and as a result was saddled with their provincial ideals I have, of course, always wondered how she might have been different had she been able to enjoy her mother's influence. It's speculation that is by its nature ineffective, and more than a little melancholy, but perhaps important in that we always should consider how we take care to train up the next generation.

While I happily pay 8.875% sales tax in New York City, which I know includes state and city taxes as well as a Metropolitan Commuter Transportation District surcharge -- I've been distressed about not having in income because it means not paying income tax and not financially supporting this city or her establishments. I have, with my abundance of free time, been spending a great deal of it at The Door as a volunteer and I've learned far more about this city, I think, than I ever could by staying here, in this tower.

As outsiders, I imagine it can be easy to stick and swell within our ranks, but I believe it is important to become a part of this world, as we are still all the same no matter our specific gifts, advantages or backgrounds. We are responsible for the citizens of New York as they are now responsible for us and I wish to do everything that I can to do what's needed of me, and perhaps of all of us.

However, I'm still at a loss as to what to do for work. I would like, very much, to use the time I'm paid for in much the same way that I volunteer, only to feel as though I'm consistent in doing everything that I can.

Having seen several waves of people come and go from this place, I've come to the conclusion that there is no one I particularly care to see on the arrivals listing.

NASA has discovered habitable planets that are quite "Earth Like" apparently. Only about 1,200 light-years away -- but it's nice to know we've somewhere to go when we've finally cocked this one up beyond repair.

No connoisseur of the theatrical arts I, but I can tell that something - several somethings - have changed since the days when I first made a habit of making time for the stage. If I were able to speak more intelligently about music I might be able to put my finger on it. Missing out on some two hundred years of artistic growth, however, has left me a little at sea; I once was able to talk about my Gluck and Boccherini as well as the next man (which was never so very well), but these days I hardly know what isn't music. It comes from every corner (often from every neighbor) and there's no getting away from it for a minute. One longs for silence. The scratching of pens. Productivity.

Perhaps the only concrete distinction I've noticed is that today it seems much more difficult to saunter across to Le Procope, as it were, and kiss the hand of the leading actress. I've always found the conversation of the cast rather more interesting than their scripted material.

The number of very charming amies I've made in the nights after openings - this, I miss.

[Text to Armand Chauvelin]

» I was thinking today
» About how you're not dreadful good at surviving on your own
» And seemed monstrous uncivil leaving a babe in the wilds
» So how's the 21st century treating you, you frisky dog.?
» And that beeping noise is coming from your telephone.

As an ambassador, one doesn't make a habit of dwelling upon the differences (never to say faults, of course) between one's hosts and one's home - nothing will make a man, be he diplomat, royalty or simple passerby, clam up so fast as pointing out that 'at home, we wear our hats this way,' or 'I must admit I prefer our own practice of' setting a table in some equally ridiculous and yet ever so slightly different arrangement. One learns to praise and only to praise, even when one's host is London, because the sensitive temperaments of the English are prone to immediate and severe inflammation at the merest suggestion that they may not quite be best at everything. And who can blame them? They've been told for so long that they are.

But I won't hold myself to the same standard now, as I've never heard of there being an ambassador to another time, and it's not as though I'm being paid for my labor or being returned home to report. So, allow me to lodge a small and no doubt unoriginal - how do you say - quibble:

There has always been cheap, relatively unhealthful food immediately available in cities for those for whom such things are convenient. Certainly in Paris and London, the two great urban areas with which I can claim any familiarity, a man has been able to purchase something drowned in butter or grease, some pastry or pasty, some sweet or lump of fat, for little enough money and with no more inconvenience than waiting in a line. But never in my life have I been subjected to quite so much indignity in the act of purchase itself - never before coming to New York have I been forced to tell a perfect stranger I wanted a McMuffin or a bacon and Gouda Artisan breakfast sandwich (where on earth do they keep the artisan?), or a Funk Meister (attempts to ascertain the meaning of this phrase have met with no success), or a Frisky Dog (indisputably an insult). The attempts of one merchant to differentiate himself from another have produced such a proliferation of ridiculousness that customers are forced to sacrifice some measure of dignity simply to acquire food. The customer must dance a silly little jig and make a fool of himself before anyone will consent to give him his money's worth. We are all idiots in the service of what we seem to be calling marketing.

Such is the stamp of capital.

Good day, mortals and slightly immortal beings alike. There are quite a few more of you here than in the summer months when last I visited.

Some of you I have seen before whilst others I met in the halls of Asgard. For the time being, I shall take my place among you and Loki (the small one) has kindly allowed me to quarter with him.

Americans, congratulations upon your primary warrior's day of birth. It is a shame that he is dead. Do you think, perhaps, it was the wooden teeth? Had he lived, he would have been 276 years old. That is still considered hale and youthful where I come from.

WHEN Love with unconfinèd wings
Hovers within my gates,
And my divine Althea brings
To whisper at the grates;
When I lie tangled in her hair
And fetter'd to her eye,
The birds that wanton in the air
Know no such liberty.

When flowing cups run swiftly round
With no allaying Thames,
Our careless heads with roses bound,
Our hearts with loyal flames;
When thirsty grief in wine we steep,
When healths and draughts go free—
Fishes that tipple in the deep
Know no such liberty.

When, like committed linnets, I
With shriller throat shall sing
The sweetness, mercy, majesty,
And glories of my King;
When I shall voice aloud how good
He is, how great should be,
Enlargèd winds, that curl the flood,
Know no such liberty.

Stone walls do not a prison make,
Nor iron bars a cage;
Minds innocent and quiet take
That for an hermitage;
If I have freedom in my love
And in my soul am free,
Angels alone, that soar above,
Enjoy such liberty.

~Richard Lovelace

Now truly lovely this is! And poignantly appropriate for the day, as well. May all of you hold your love close to your hearts, and celebrate the beauty that finding the partner of your fëa brings.

I last arrived in New York in July of 1781. I'm pleased, but not surprised, to find it's changed very much for the better. Battles are fought, wars are won, all for a reason. So often in the midst of conflict men forget the greater purpose and fall to griping about inconveniences. About minor injustices. About money.

How grand to stand upon the soil of a nation that knows what it owes to war and hasn't yet shied back from it. How good to be surrounded by a people so far removed from that generation that still clung to the stupid, stubborn veneration of men who who by the mere appendage of a name could usurp the Divine.

Even if they do speak Engli

Hello, everyone. My name is Virginia Potts. I'm better known as (and answer to) the moniker that Tony gave me many years ago, Pepper.

I wanted to take a moment to welcome you all to the Refugee Network. Tony Stark - as well as many others - created the network so you would have a safe space to talk without the prying eyes of the media. I'd like to give them a warm thank you for their hard work.

Some of you have been here for a while, and as of today, the Tesseract has given us more refugees than it has in the previous five months, and it's still going. I'd like to take a moment to thank the hard-working men and women of S.H.I.E.L.D. for their diligence and perseverance. Without their quick thinking when refugees began to appear, this would have been nearly impossible for any one of us to handle.

And on that note, Director Fury has asked me to pass along the message that they are in dire need for Administrative Staff to help with processing. Anyone who is interested can pass on a note to your Housing Assistant.

Speaking of, there should be one Housing Assistant per two floors (and in one case, three floors). Should you require any assistance, they should be able to help you. Potts Tower is not a new building, but we have gutted it, given it an ARC reactor for clean energy, a full service gym in the basement, an outdoor patio and pool area, and an entertainment area. We plan to utilize all of these areas in the upcoming holiday season in the hopes that it helps alleviate some of the melancholy of being without your families.

Once again, welcome to the Refugee Network and Potts Tower, and I look forward to getting to know you.

-Virginia Potts
