I've need to say, managing one's finances was certainly much simpler in the 18th century, and there I had significantly more to handle on both England and the Continent with only a network of courriers, but between the inexplicable forms required for taxation and the unpersonable agents.
But t'would seem working is as complicated. What's the general concensus on unions? I'm afraid I'm a bit out of timeframe for them unfamiliar with the concept and while they seem harmless enough--even beneficial say, seems the practical opinion on them's a bit more divided.
