[Firefly Folk]
Ain't right. Got on the network this mornin to tell you all I went ahead and got the ranch. Hour outside of town, gorram sight more like home than this metal & stone tower they got us all crammed up in.

Zoe and Wash done good, brought home a helicopter needin some work. Kaylee, thinkin that'll be just the thing to get you too and from your government job once you get it up and runnin. Thinkin Wash even got hisself volunteered to lend a hand.

Cept all I see was some note about Jayne disappearin, so instead I went and kicked a few walls, shot a few cans. Ain't right, this happenin to us over'n over. I'm gonna be out tearin down a few walls, rebuildin some things on the ranch. Good distraction if any of you find yourself of a mind to need it.

I must say I never thought I'd make it to New York.

Honestly, I really didn't. I thought if I ever tried, the ship would be so boring that I'd pitch myself straight into the sea before we made it even halfway. I can't imagine being cooped up with the same people for that long, particularly if none of them were not even the least bit interesting. Which, in my sad experience, not many people are.

Anyway, I'm glad to be here. In 2013, as well. I like that it didn't take it's time getting here, or at least I like to think I skipped the dull in-between stages of past and present. Transitions always drag on far too long. No one knows when to bloody-well let go of the old. As though anything old, worn and used up has any value at all.

Claude Monet was a master despite his cataracts; we would never see his gracefully blended colour (I am partial to wisteria in place of waterlilies) nor the subsequent fade into the different fields of perspective. For all we know, if he had not had his slowly worsening eyesight, he would have been a caricaturist or (god forbid) Caravaggio. As it is, I thank his lack of clear eyesight most profoundly for the works he produced.

I say all of this because I too -- setting myself to ledgers at the art-supply store or to my own books and writings in the evening -- have noticed the world blurring a bit at the edges and going soft, if you will. Soft to spare me, I first thought ... then not so much. Soft because my near century-old retinas are telling me that they want a little down-time.

Officially, I need spectacles. Unofficially, I suppose I can use them to read. When I came back, the manager suggested that perhaps I attempt to be a little "more hipster" and I certainly don't know what me means. I am who I am and these fit my face fine. Ultimately, I think, he liked them too. But because of my (only slightly) grievous discovery, I bought myself a consolation prize.

So, consider this a request ... can I take your picture?

I GOT A DOG!!!!

Cut not filtered )

His name is Titan and I adopted him from a rescue group. Isn't he just gorgeous? I missed my pitbull Back Up, so I figured it was time to get a lovely gentleman of my own. He's every bit the father of gods.

Thanks to Sam for helping me pick him out.

So, I don't know how much Sam told you about when we went out that first night...

This little fellow came in for a bath this morning:

cut for image )

He perked right up when I took his jacket off him. I told the lady who dropped him when she came back that he was just embarrassed but she wouldn't hear a word of it. The blasted thing went right back on again, and if his chin didn't drop right back down to the ground. Poor bastard. At least he got a brushing.

Where I come from dogs was for hunting mostly - I met some sheep dogs of course but the ones I worked with caught birds and that was about all. I guess it's nice they make them now to lie around in sitting rooms because who doesn't like to lie around in sitting rooms? But they don't need jackets. Or jumpers. Or ribbons on their ears. Or shoes, you wouldn't believe the people who bring them in with shoes. What's the point?

I'll get an Irish Setter I think. So far they're my favourite.

The apple appears between olive leaves
Splash of red in the green of summer fields
It brings young men to their knees

A thunder clap that moves the trees
Dreams in the distance remain concealed
The apple appears between olive leaves

Smoke swept away by the warm breeze
All spirits broken remain unhealed
It brings young men to their knees

Truths in which they all believe
To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield
The apple appears between olive leaves

Hearts adorned on brass buttoned sleeves
Until away they soar in coffins sealed
It brings young men to their knees

A moment of silence but no reprieve
Fallen fruit in a deflowered field.
The apple appears between olive leaves
It brings young men to their knees

I admit I know next to nothing about this world, but this thing you call a shower is nothing short of a miracle.

Poem )

When I was younger, I was told I had quite the active (and at times over-active) imagination. I was a very romantic child who liked to read all the breathy stories about lovers and death parting them. I used to think that they defined tragedy. My definition is now somewhat changed.

Or it hasn't, not really. I'm still moved by the gentle pitch and sway of emotional upset, but I think there are other brutal darknesses in the world that account for true suffering. That nothing can be defined by the bitter tears at a graveside alone and that pain and loss and hardships are all as individual and unique as the faces they crease.

I looked at a map. I thought this might be closer to the A Argentina. It isn't on the way. That's where I'm supposed to be going.

Hello. Anyway. I'm Scudder.

And I guess I wouldn't have said no to a boat to New York. There sure is a lot of you, isn't there.

Hello, everyone. My name is Virginia Potts. I'm better known as (and answer to) the moniker that Tony gave me many years ago, Pepper.

I wanted to take a moment to welcome you all to the Refugee Network. Tony Stark - as well as many others - created the network so you would have a safe space to talk without the prying eyes of the media. I'd like to give them a warm thank you for their hard work.

Some of you have been here for a while, and as of today, the Tesseract has given us more refugees than it has in the previous five months, and it's still going. I'd like to take a moment to thank the hard-working men and women of S.H.I.E.L.D. for their diligence and perseverance. Without their quick thinking when refugees began to appear, this would have been nearly impossible for any one of us to handle.

And on that note, Director Fury has asked me to pass along the message that they are in dire need for Administrative Staff to help with processing. Anyone who is interested can pass on a note to your Housing Assistant.

Speaking of, there should be one Housing Assistant per two floors (and in one case, three floors). Should you require any assistance, they should be able to help you. Potts Tower is not a new building, but we have gutted it, given it an ARC reactor for clean energy, a full service gym in the basement, an outdoor patio and pool area, and an entertainment area. We plan to utilize all of these areas in the upcoming holiday season in the hopes that it helps alleviate some of the melancholy of being without your families.

Once again, welcome to the Refugee Network and Potts Tower, and I look forward to getting to know you.

-Virginia Potts
