The Doorway: a panfandom game

There's a girl at the Barnes & Noble Starbucks who gives me free chocolate peanut butter cookies whenever I come in. And yesterday she just wouldn't stop talking about something called Serial. (Which I thought was called Sirial because then it made sense that she'd be telling me about it. But no, it is not.)

And it's about a fellow who maybe killed somebody, and he had a trial. And now he's having a miniature trial to determine whether or not he gets another trial.

I can't work out whether or not she was taunting me.

Looks like JK Rowling is just telling the muggles everything about the magical world. It feels a bit awkward almost. Although, I must say, I don't think I've ever met a student from Castelobruxo.

So, Halloween's coming up. It's been a while since we've done any proper celebrating, but I saw something that gave me a bit of inspiration.

I grew up during the end of the Industrial Revolution. Born in 1869, already behind me was Robert Stevenson's Bell Rock Lighthouse in 1811, John Rennie's London Bridge in '31 and Isambard Kingdom Brunel's incredible SS Great Eastern in '59. During my lifetime, I saw pictures of the Brooklyn Bridge being constructed from the time I was but one year old to my thirteenth year.

Every project was plagued by hardship and death. Every time, the opposition to these great engineers shouted loudly that they were pushing past the limits of men and material. The idea that already mankind was going too far - let alone the idea that we could go further.

But humanity has always refused to be limited. And already what I've seen at Stark Expo - innovation in technology, communication, medicine and architecture tells me that no only have we never slowed down, but we welcome new challenges for the glory of overcoming them. So I must encourage those who aren't necessarily interested in science and haven't yet gone out to Flushing Meadows to see the Expo to do so. Because it's inspiring to see where we're all heading. For someone like me, who's familiar with the leaps and bounds we've made over the past centuries, but for anyone -- there is nothing but hope to be found in a glimpse of a promising future.

Has anyone seen or spoken to Lily today? I'd arranged to drop off a book she wished to read and she did not answer her door. She hasn't answered her phone or replied to my email. It is unlike her.

Well. That was weird. There aren't any "little people" at Hogwarts, or in the Wizarding World, so far as I know. But... I guess I'm not an expert at all.

I'm all for Halloween celebrations (although, I'm not quite sure I'm a fan of the leaf decorations in some of the hallways today) I was wondering if anyone had plans for a more traditional type of harvest celebration? Less costumes and skeletons, more candles and pies, that sort?

Perhaps my perspective on this particular subject is unique, or different, being from the inclusive (and at times, too inclusive) nation of wizards and things such as powers and abilities are obviously different there -- I can't help but wonder, with all this talk, what Superheroes, or heroes - what makes a person one?

And what world do we live in where doing the right thing is suddenly extraordinary and worthy of praise? Doing the right thing, no matter how difficult, isn't what makes a person a hero - it's what makes them human.
