War Veterans Meeting

So I've got two announcements for you gents and ladies.

I've been in some talks with the folks over here at the Legion, (Post #398) because I thought we might get on well with those old boys and take up a few seats during their impromptu Jazz nights. With $5 beers and $8 dinners I really don't think a one of us should refuse -- so they're be expecting us to pop in from time to time. I know I plan to make it one of my usual haunts, no word of a lie.

Originally, I was thinking we could just go there for our Veterans nights, -- but, being a "refugee" and seeing that we're all from different backgrounds and battles, I though we ought to meet apart from the Legion, just so's we aren't imposing too much, and because I know not all of us fought in American wars.

With that in mind, I did some looking around, fell upon The Clover Club and thought that might be right for us. They take Reservations Sunday-Thursday, so I booked us in for April 11th.

Hope to see you.

It would appear I've gone an become an academic while I wasn't looking. A few teachers lost, a few teachers gained and I've re-organised the subjects I'm teaching -- and added a course, as well. Classes are as follows:

Greek, Latin, (Greek and Roman) Philosophy, Ancient World History - These will all be part of a Classics series. If you're interested in any one -- I might suggest you take, or consider taking, any of the others as there is so much intersection. If you already have a full schedule but might be interested in some supplemental reading, I could easily provide you with a book list.

Welsh - I'm taking over this class from the charming, former resident, Brother Cadfael. If there is enough interest, I'll open up to not only Welsh but Gaeilge, Manx and Scots Gaelic as well.

(European) Medieval History - Not all just plague and crusades.

Irish History - Not all about potatoes, Catholics and Protestants Well, it might act

Irish Culture - Bit of a vanity project this. The focus of it will be on Irish traditions, music, literature, theatre, language etc. Bit of a catch all, good for anyone interested in more than just green beer.

If anyone else is interested in some of these topics, please inquire. We could certainly use the numbers.

[Rupert Giles, Loki (the smaller?) Lily Evans, Percy Jackson, Jeremy Gilbert ]

You're a very small group, so I was wondering if you'd all like to meet together? I'm a bit informal, but given that a pub is out of the question, I propose a coffee shop -- I'm sure there is a budget for that. Twice a week at a time that works for everyone? Two hour blocks. There will be assignments but no tests or exams -- with people up and leaving, what's the point? This is about learning, not about proving anything

I spoke to Septimus for quite some time today, he was very... His face was very Anyway his line of questions (don't ask) led me to this article here. So I think I'm going to kill myself.

So the clock on the computer just switched over to April 1st, and more than that, it's now Easter Monday. It was...seven Easter Mondays ago for me now since Padraig Pearse stood in front of the GPO in Dublin, proclaimed Ireland a Republic, and began our own cycle of blood sacrifice and redemption.

I think it's appropriate that Easter and the true beginning of our Independence struggle fell so close. So many similar themes. Persecution. Loss. Death. Rebirth against all odds and a resurrection in the face of evil.

And yet...what was it for? Ireland is (mostly) Irish now, and yet so little has changed. We traded the Imperialism of the British for the repressive Roman rule of Dev. Contraceptives weren't legal without a prescription until 1985! Women were expected to be in the home - and this was enshrined in our constitution. We fell again into poverty, and Dev turned on the very people who had supported him the moment he was in power.

Was this what we died for? Was this what we fought for? To have the country divided and backwards and to have the whole world come down on us for letting a young woman die because we had draconian restrictions on life-saving medical procedures?

It wasn't what I fought for.

Connolly was right all along. “If you remove the English Army tomorrow and hoist the green flag over Dublin Castle., unless you set about the organization of the Socialist Republic your efforts will be in vain. England will still rule you. She would rule you through her capitalists, through her landlords, through her financiers, through the whole array of commercial and individualist institutions she has planted in this country and watered with the tears of our mothers and the blood of our martyrs.”

Only, he forgot to add Rome to that, as well.

I don't know if I'm ever going to be able to practice medicine in this place. I graduated medical school with honors at home, but so much has changed in the...ninety years I've missed. Germ theory, antibiotics, chemotherapy, all the invasive surgeries that are possible now that we'd never thought of before...So many new things.

I'm an anachronism in so many ways.

At least nothing's changed in Ireland. Same old mad mess that it always was. Too bad I seem to have missed the Celtic Tiger.

There was much ado in South Dublin's Clondalkin.

Apparently a stomach and entrails were discovered in a bin and everyone had their shit in a knot (ha) over whether or not the remains were human -- it turns out they weren't, they belonged to a dearly-departed sheep, but given the Republic's devotion to the glorious Kathleen Ni Houlihan and the Catholic church, its no wonder they've lost the ability to tell the difference between citizens and sheep.

This would have never happened in Scotland, wasting sheep innards like that.

Hello? This is how this magic works? The man told me to introduce myself. I am Eragon of Carvahall. I have been told that my dragon, Saphira, is not here. I have also been told not to use magic here for a period of time to adjust.

This place... this New York, is much larger than anything I have ever seen, though I have seen little except Teirm. I am living with someone named Percy Jackson. I will be pleased to meet you and have a better reaction to you than those I first met.

The man also asked if someone can continue my teaching in reading? It has been nearly a month since Brom taught me, and the runes are unfamiliar to me.

Thank you.

[FILTERED TO MEDICAL STAFF]

I was wondering if one of you might be able to help me catch up on the medical advancements of the last ninety years? I graduated from Trinity College in 1918, and while I graduated with honors and was well respected in my time (I even got a job with a prestigious teaching hospital in England), it's been a long time and there's just a lot I don't know anymore.

I appreciate any help you might give me. I've tried reading some journals online, and they're just well beyond what I learned. But antibiotics are incredible. Absolutely stunning. What I would have done to have something that could stop infection so efficiently...

[/FILTER]

If nothing else, at least medicine's advanced a lot since I studied it.

As an ambassador, one doesn't make a habit of dwelling upon the differences (never to say faults, of course) between one's hosts and one's home - nothing will make a man, be he diplomat, royalty or simple passerby, clam up so fast as pointing out that 'at home, we wear our hats this way,' or 'I must admit I prefer our own practice of' setting a table in some equally ridiculous and yet ever so slightly different arrangement. One learns to praise and only to praise, even when one's host is London, because the sensitive temperaments of the English are prone to immediate and severe inflammation at the merest suggestion that they may not quite be best at everything. And who can blame them? They've been told for so long that they are.

But I won't hold myself to the same standard now, as I've never heard of there being an ambassador to another time, and it's not as though I'm being paid for my labor or being returned home to report. So, allow me to lodge a small and no doubt unoriginal - how do you say - quibble:

There has always been cheap, relatively unhealthful food immediately available in cities for those for whom such things are convenient. Certainly in Paris and London, the two great urban areas with which I can claim any familiarity, a man has been able to purchase something drowned in butter or grease, some pastry or pasty, some sweet or lump of fat, for little enough money and with no more inconvenience than waiting in a line. But never in my life have I been subjected to quite so much indignity in the act of purchase itself - never before coming to New York have I been forced to tell a perfect stranger I wanted a McMuffin or a bacon and Gouda Artisan breakfast sandwich (where on earth do they keep the artisan?), or a Funk Meister (attempts to ascertain the meaning of this phrase have met with no success), or a Frisky Dog (indisputably an insult). The attempts of one merchant to differentiate himself from another have produced such a proliferation of ridiculousness that customers are forced to sacrifice some measure of dignity simply to acquire food. The customer must dance a silly little jig and make a fool of himself before anyone will consent to give him his money's worth. We are all idiots in the service of what we seem to be calling marketing.

Such is the stamp of capital.

So Dev went Free State the moment he got the chance, betrayed us, and then declared a Republic while still ignoring the six counties of Northern Ireland. Not to mention moving us back as far as he could on women's rights and tucking us into bed nicely with the Catholic Church. From being the first country to have Universal Suffrage in our original constitution, we've become the country that puts in bullshit like this:

"that the inadequate strength of women and the tender age of children shall not be abused, and that women or children shall not be forced by economic necessity to enter avocations unsuited to their sex, age or strength".

Brilliant.

I need a drink. Or to stop reading. Or both.

I can't believe I have to wait ONE MORE YEAR to "LEGALLY" buy a drink in this country. How is it that people can make voting decisions before they are capable of acquiring alcohol through legal means?

I miss England.

[info]irelandunfree

So this is New York.

Not quite what I imagined, but I didn't imagine 2013, either.

I'm almost afraid to look at the papers. Not sure I want to know what's happened in the last ninety years.

Hello, everyone. My name is Virginia Potts. I'm better known as (and answer to) the moniker that Tony gave me many years ago, Pepper.

I wanted to take a moment to welcome you all to the Refugee Network. Tony Stark - as well as many others - created the network so you would have a safe space to talk without the prying eyes of the media. I'd like to give them a warm thank you for their hard work.

Some of you have been here for a while, and as of today, the Tesseract has given us more refugees than it has in the previous five months, and it's still going. I'd like to take a moment to thank the hard-working men and women of S.H.I.E.L.D. for their diligence and perseverance. Without their quick thinking when refugees began to appear, this would have been nearly impossible for any one of us to handle.

And on that note, Director Fury has asked me to pass along the message that they are in dire need for Administrative Staff to help with processing. Anyone who is interested can pass on a note to your Housing Assistant.

Speaking of, there should be one Housing Assistant per two floors (and in one case, three floors). Should you require any assistance, they should be able to help you. Potts Tower is not a new building, but we have gutted it, given it an ARC reactor for clean energy, a full service gym in the basement, an outdoor patio and pool area, and an entertainment area. We plan to utilize all of these areas in the upcoming holiday season in the hopes that it helps alleviate some of the melancholy of being without your families.

Once again, welcome to the Refugee Network and Potts Tower, and I look forward to getting to know you.

-Virginia Potts
