I've been banished from my own kitchen. I just wanted tea. I usually prefer coffee but I need tea to deal with your strange American holidays.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone! Or Happy Hanukkah, if you celebrate it! I, for one, can't wait to have some turkey. Mom has banned me from the kitchen unless it's for something to drink. Dad's at work but he gets the night off so it's just me and mom right now. I'm attempting to get some homework done, but as I'm here, it's obviously not going well.

Anyone daring enough to head to the stores tomorrow?

I agreed to spend proper thanksgiving at my parents' since my brother and his husband aren't coming over to take over the kitchen until tomorrow.

I should probably note that this is the first time I'll have seen them since they kicked me out.

Nervous is a bit of an understatement. I think I might throw up. I'm not sure how to approach this.

I should have asked if I was allowed to bring a guest, too. I think I might just show up with one anyway.

This is awful.

I can't tell you how many suits I've put on and then taken off again. It's like I want to make the best impression I can, to prove that I'm far better off without their toxic influence, but none of them feel quite good enough or like they're giving the wrong idea and I just...I don't know.

It's getting harder and harder to focus, and I can feel my feathers ruffling and my wings are kind of twitchy. I might make a run to Paris before at least, or somewhere in Italy. If I show up with a decent bottle of wine, but that might not matter either. They might just wonder how exactly I got it in the first place when really I'm just trying to be polite or...ugh.

Since I cannot cook to save my life - beyond the basics anyway - and I really don't want to go home to the awkward silent meal with my mother that would await me I decided to order in food and bring it to the children's ward for the little kiddies who are unable to spend Thanksgiving at home.

It's been an incredible experience - they are so sweet and it's wonderful to see them all smile. Storytime later and before that some gentle games. I can't help thinking this is really what it should all be about.

Good luck to those who are going out to brave the lines and crowds tonight and tomorrow at the stores. I've never really understood the whole Black Friday thing. I understand that stores have sales and things, but don't they have sales during the entire Christmas season?
