What motivates you to do the things you do?

Dec. 3rd, 2013

[info]bythesoundngsea

Like, how long do you think we'll be here? Will we have time to get used to it?

It's not bad, really, but I kind of miss the angst. It's a lot easier to write depressing angsty romance or poetry in the zombie apocalypse than in this...pre-rising ennui. Although maybe I could use the ennui.

Or maybe I'll just write more porn.

Ladies, indulge this line of thinking for a moment, if you'd please:

Several of you have, at one point or another, assured me that I thought you couldn't do something because you were women. That strikes me as unfailingly stupid.

What makes you feel persecuted?

[info]die_as_myself

I don't know who you people think you are, but you can't keep me here! You can't do this to me. The Capitol knows where I am and they'll rescue me and kill you all or turn you all into Avoxes! You're all monsters. Mutts!

Let me go!,

Let me go!!!!!

I wish to retract my earlier statement.

This is not a nice place to live, it's beastly, and I was being childishly optimistic and naive when I said otherwise. I apologize to any decent people who were misled by what I said.

[info]afterthendtimes

The medicine here stinks. I feel like a cave person. But I can keep my eyes open for a while, so I'll take it, I guess.

On an unrelated note, I have a 'future person' question:

How do you handle people trying to stop you on the street? We don't walk around, there's no social protocol for it. I'm twitchy.

[info]relarfela

I've been so sick this last week I thought I was going to die, but apparently I wasn't nearly as sick as I thought.

I would love to know more about how the technology here works. I've never seen anything like it, even Master Kilvin's work in the Artificery.

[info]die_as_myself

Hey, everyone.

My name's Peeta Mellark, and I wasn't in the best shape when I got here didn't greet all of you as I should have.

When we introduce ourselves at the games

So, I guess what would be interesting to know, since we're all from different places - what's the thing that's most different between this place and your home?

For me, there's so much food, and everyone has so much money. My father owned the bakery in our town, but I could hardly ever afford cookies or cakes, because the cost of sugar was so high. But here, I see kids coming in the morning before school every day and buying two or three doughnuts. It's crazy.

So, what about everyone else?

Nov. 11th, 2013

[info]ofgilead

Long days and pleasant nights to ya, especially to the new people who've come todash in the last week or so. I've not given greetings to the most of ya, and I'd like to change that.

I'm Roland Deschain, of Gilead, son of Steven and of the Line of Eld. As for what I do, in my home we say I deal in lead. At home, we're the defense against the world moving on, and if we can't stop it, we try at least to slow it, say true. We fight for the Affiliation, for the White, and against the forces of the Red. We offer aid and succor to those in need, and protect those who can't help themselves. It's noble work for a noble line, and we hold in our minds and in our hearts the faces of our fathers.

Those of ya from this world might have read the terrible books about me; books that take place when I'm a good bit older than I am now. It's not so strange, that these books exist, so it's not, for all the worlds are connected by the Tower and the Beams, but I'll not talk of it. It's like as not you've got such things in other worlds; I'll set my watch and warrant on it.

Now this world's made it clear to me and my ka-mate that our services aren't welcome, and I'll not rehash the argument, say sorry. But I'd greet each and every one of you, and offer what I can to ya as a Gunslinger of Gilead.

May we all be well-met in this place.

[Filtered to Cuthbert]

'Bert, I'm weary of this.

I try only to introduce myself to the new arrivals, and they'll not let me do so in peace.

[info]relarfela

The Name of Stone, like stone itself, is deep, eternal, and forever sad.

Wind, I think, must be much more changing, transient, and fickle. I think I'll try to find it next, simply because it's so different.

[info]ladyofwinter

I think it's going to snow soon. I can feel it.

And no, I didn't do it, Harry. It's almost winter.

Would anyone like a snowball? The edible kind.

[info]youwontlikeit

Hello everyone! New Arrivals, welcome to Madison Valley. For those of you who don't know, my name is Justine and I work as a secretary in City Hall. I'm from Chicago 2007.

So here's a few things, 1 and 2 are for new arrivals and 3 is for everyone:

1. I'm making a roster for those who are looking for work but are having a hard time finding it on their own. Please sign up, and I will get back to you all at the same time when I have more information.

2. If any of the new arrivals are from a pre-Industrial or post-Industrial society, I encourage you to attend classes I hold throughout the week. We'll focus on teaching you some necessary survival skills in the 21st century. They happen on Tuesdays and Thursdays as needed, from 6:30 to 7:30. Thomas and I also hold a sex education class and we cover topics as needed and new sexually transmitted diseases found here that you may or may not be aware of in and from your respective timelines. If you have any questions about sex or sexually based concerns please do ask us, we encourage communication.

3. I thought we'd celebrate Thanksgiving with a potlock. If anyone's interested in doing that we can, otherwise enjoy the holidays with your respective friends and family. But, that also made me realize that we're sticking to very American holidays, and if there's anything any of the non-Americans want to celebrate, we should do that too.

Thank you!

There are a lot more people here than when I was here last time.

So how about this, let's everybody introduce ourselves. Give me your name, where you're from, and one interesting fact.

Ok, so I gave it a try, but my foster parents and I don't really see eye to eye on.. well, on anything. However, they did say that they wouldn't fight me if I found another guardian among our own group that would be suitable. I think the dad is kind of afraid that if he fights me on it, someone scarier than him will step in.

I'm fifteen, almost sixteen and attend the high school. I like to sing and I just won the female lead in the school musical, so I'll probably be at school rehearsals and practicing with the male lead a lot for the next little while. I can try to get a part time job if that would help.

Edit: Looks like I have a new guardian. Thank you, Klaus.

The library here is an enormous disappointment. While there were some interesting plays to be read, the rest of their collection is sorely lacking.

They don't even have a copy of Celum Tincture, not to mention The Mating Habits of the Common Draccus.

Okay, I am trying to make up this pamphlet for newbie arrivals and have some questions for all of you.

What was the most helpful thing someone told you upon arrival?
What was the least helpful thing told to you?
What information would you have liked to have known upon arrival that you didn't find out until later on?

Answers, go!

[info]karrinmurphysi

I heard on the police scanner that they caught the guy who beat up Fix. Arrested him.

I thought everyone should know that - the police did what they were supposed to do, even when it came to protecting one of us.

I don't know what's going on with this kid that Dresden brought home last night, but I'm of the opinion that we need to step up and make sure they don't make those mistakes before they even happen. We need to be proactive on this, instead of sitting back and letting them have the first move.

I think we need to...be more involved with the process of arrivals, too. We need to be more proactive on this, instead of sitting back and letting them have the first move.

[info]sonofhades

I can't believe we're stuck here.

I mean. I can. We obviously are. But it sucks. Guess it's good I'm not one of the seven of the prophecy. Although. Maybe this is why I'm not.

[info]ofgilead

I'm not the speaker Cuthbert is, say true, but I think I need to gather my words and say a piece in defense of us. It's proper confusing to me, but it seems that some of you think that Cuthbert and I see ourselves as above you, which is not the least bit true. Aye, we come from a place not the least bit like this, and I know we've said some things that you've not liked, say sorry. But all we want is to use the talents we were born and trained to in order to provide some degree of security that doesn't seem to be forthcoming from the local peacekeepers. To protect you, to follow the White, to provide aid and succor if necessary - not to rule ya, say true.

I know also that in the reckoning of this place, I'm but a boy. But at home, I'm a gunslinger, tried and tested, and have all the responsibilities and duties of a man. I don't look through my eyes as a boy does, and I haven't for some time. I know most of ya don't know what a gunslinger is, or what we do. And I don't expect ye to. You're not from Gilead, so's the shame, just as we're not from here. I do realize that this isn't Gilead, and that we can't expect things to work the same here as they did there. It's a hard bit to swallow, but I'm trying, and I'm sure Cuthbert is, too. But ya can't just dismiss our experiences because this isn't Gilead. Our experiences make us, so they do, and how we react to things here is going to be based on how our tutors and how our fathers taught us. To act in another way would be to forget the faces of our fathers.

Aye, I've likely said too much, so I have. Words don't come so easy to me as they do to Cuthbert. But I hope some of what I said speaks true to ya, and explains us just a bit more.

[info]humane

When I said I would leave town, this isn't what I had in mind.

Am I alone here?

[info]leishacamden

I've been thinking a lot over the past few days. Some things Georgia said really stuck with me and now after the violence at the theater I think-

I think I need to live by my principles more.

So I'm not going to let some stupid looter who thinks the only way to get what he wants is by hitting people scare me.

And I'm not going to let some corrupt government that won't respect people's rights scare me either.

That's not what Kenzo Yagai would do. That's not what my daddy would do. It's giving in, and that's not right. Not in my timeline when the anti-genemod people try to wreck things, and not in this one where anti-refugee people do the same thing.

So I'm going to pitch my stall where I want and I'm going to make all the money I need and I'm not going to let them scare me into hiding in a church for as long as I'm here. Because I deserve better than that.

All of these discussions about "protecting" and guns and magic reminds me too much of what Lucifer was doing to my world before I was brought here.

It also reminds me just how very damn alone I am here.

No offense, John and Mary, you guys have been great. It's just not the same.

So, what is it we're looking at here? It seems from reading that there's some big problem between magical and non-magical people. Do we have a list of what's here? What isn't? Weaknesses? Strengths? I'm not asking for any reason other than it's good to have the knowledge and to know what's going on. The more we know, the less we fear.

[info]afterthendtimes

Let's have a discussion.

Roland seems to have touched a nerve, so I'm officially asking everyone here:

1.) Do you feel unsafe? If so, who/what group are you worried about?
2.) If you do, why? Please mention whether or not this feeling is colored by previous experiences in your own timelines.
3.) What are some ideas you have for alleviating this problem, that you think could be implemented? We all have ideal solutions, but let's focus on pragmatics.

If you don't feel comfortable addressing some of these questions publically, feel free to either tell me privately in some way or say you don't feel comfortable. It's fine, but if you don't say anything at all, even to abstain from answering, we can't know your thoughts and consider them.

In terms of ideas, so far there's been Roland's suggestion of a protective force (which I object to, but I'm one vote). I'd also like to suggest the idea of escorting people, or setting up checks of some sort within the community for those who are interested.

Has anyone seen my spaceship? It's a silver RW6, the very newest model I stole it from I hope nobody's borrowed it for research.

Also, does this planet have a single computer terminal?

Don't get me wrong. It's great to see other humans. Really. And this is - bloody hell, this is Earth, isn't it, I'd just expected it to be a little less boring. Maybe I'm in the wrong place? How far away is Islington?

[info]leishacamden

You know the funny thing about that other Leisha from those books? She gets banned from a place called Sanctuary. If you ask me it's because she's got a better grasp of Yagaiist ethics than people who think going and living on a space station away from Sleepers is the way to deal with things. I don't think Kenzo Yagai would have agreed with that at all. It doesn't really follow trader principles, being that isolated.

But then here I am living at the church which is a different kind of sanctuary. The parallel's only slight? But it's interesting. Because both places exist because of authorities making unjust demands, really.

Oh, something else. Does anyone know how I could learn to test blood?

Anyway, I think we need to think carefully about who to send, and do this by consensus if at all possible.

So at this point, who has been nominated? And what categories of people should we be certain to represent?

ATTENTION REFUGEES

There has been much discussion among us about the limiting of weapons and dangerous articles among the refugees. However, as we embrace the second amendment as much as any American, we are loathe to seize any weapons that you may have brought with you.

As we have been unable to come to any clear conclusion over what is to be done about this problem, we would like to meet with representatives at a time and place convenient to you. We are sorry that we cannot meet with all of you, but we feel it is better for security reasons to limit the number allowed in the council chambers.

So if it is possible, please choose - or elect - three representatives to come and argue your case before us on this matter.

Thank you,

Citizens and Refugees of Madison Valley

Because of the recent violence that has taken place at King's Daughters Hospital, and the protest and refusal of many of the doctors and administration there to continue to treat refugees who threaten them, injure them, or destroy their premises, the Hospital can now be considered off limits to all refugees.

A Refugee's Clinic will be opened at the location of the old Madison Clinic, staffed with doctors not involved in the protest, to treat the illnesses and injuries of refugees.

Also, due to recent events, the use of magic is now banned in Madison Valley. Those who are found violating this law will be subject to 90 days in prison and/or a fine of $10,000.
