I should have gone to Cape Verde.

White sand beaches, almost endless wealth. No extradition treaty. I could have lived comfortably for the rest of my life.

I shouldn't have let Mozzie open that bottle of wine. Or the second one. Or however many were after that.

I'm not sure where I ended up, but I don't think it's Africa.

How many of you aren't working?

I'm wondering if it would be feasible to get a list of your particular skills to find related work, or do a workshop for resume building to help you find a job.

Not every place in town requires or will demand a blood test. If you need help finding work, I'll help you.

I read back a bit that somebody posted a few weeks back about what the things are that we miss here the most.

I was thinking, it being November, and the month of Thanksgiving and all, that maybe we should tweak that a little, and think instead about the things here that we're most grateful for. There's got to be something we like about this place, no matter how little it is? A person we have here that we don't have back home. Something we don't have to face here...something that just brightens our day a little.

It's not been easy for any of us, being pulled out of our homes and brought to this place, but maybe by thinking of something good that's happened to us since we've been here, we can kind of pull together? Or maybe that's just sunny Summer thinking.

Anyway.

I'm grateful for Lily, and I love Hinkleburgers.

[info]for_family

Attention: Refugees

Lissa, Georgia and I have taken your concerns into consideration and discussion. In response for a request of our intentions we're releasing a brief statement of issues we deemed important and will therefore address at the first Council meeting.

The issues follow as:
- Guardianship for those under 18
- The ban of magic
- Use of the hospital facilities
- New arrivals

1. Guardianship.
We propose that financially stable Refugees present become guardians for any new arrivals under 18 years of age. You'll also be given first priority if a member of your family arrives, financial status notwithstanding. In order for this to be effective we've determined that volunteers should step forward if you're willing and able to take on a child. You should tell us the age group you're comfortable with, if you're comfortable with magic users, and how many children you are able to care for. In addition, the children already present should be given a choice about coming under the guardianship of Refugees or staying with their assigned family.
2. Magic ban.
We're against the ban of magic as a whole and will appeal to the Council to remove it entirely.
3. The hospital.
We've agreed that our population should be permitted to use the hospital services, as the separation from hospital to clinic has split resources and left the city as a whole exposed to health concerns that effect us all, Refugee and local alike.
4. New arrivals.
Given the treatment by the city many of us receive upon arrival, we're requesting that one of our number be present during the initial welcoming phases with new arrivals. We need several volunteers to be on hand for this task as new arrivals appear in the city at any hour.

- Cesare Borgia, Lissa Dragomir, Georgia Mason

[Filtered; Georgia, Lissa.]
Volunteers to meet new arrivals:
Daryl Dixon - any
Karrin Murphy - morning
Molly Carpenter - night
Sookie Stackhouse - day
Roland Deschain - 4pm to 7
Katherine Pryde - any
Helena Wayne - Night
Tris Prior - any
Oliver Queen - day
Maria Deluca - any

Volunteers for guardians
Karrin Murphy - any age, 2 at most, magic +
Jo Harvelle - any age, 1 at most, magic +
Marius Black - any age, 2 at most, magic +
Clara Oswald - any age, 4 at most, magic +
Katherine Pryde - any age, 2 at most, magic +

Who: Everyone!
What: Halloween party
Where: A rented hall
When: October 31st!
Warnings | Status: TBD | On going | IC/OOC

Hey guys! This is the official Halloween party thread. You may tag into it ICly and interact with each other, or you may tag it OOC and just tell us what your character(s) did or are doing for the night. The hall was officially decorated by Caroline, there's food with the appropriate Halloween themes, music and general entertainment. Justine did also add in a gaudy Halloween sign that says 'Happy Birthday Harry' and there will be cake. There is a costume contest, I don't know how you guys want to decide who won that, but go for it and have fun! Justine is also personally greeting everyone and handing out bags of assorted candy.

Happy Halloween!

Also, by mod confirmation, this thread is worth 40 points!

Adaptive Immunities, the writings of Shaun Mason

Hello audience and fair-weather friends!

I don't actually like repeating myself. I only do it to annoy George and even then it loses its appeal when she reduces herself to eye rolling and physical abuse (don't you worry, I hit back). That said, there's a whole bunch of new people popping up--hello welcome to small town insanity I've got first class tickets on the crazytrain heading to crazytown--and there's some minor details I wanna air out for you. Mostly because it's easier this way and it'll save my sister a whole lot of effort explaining to you new comers.

George, myself, Daryl, Beth, Carol and Buffy are what amounts to walking corpses. Pretty neat, huh? Don't suck all the fun out of it though by making it more complicated than it actually is.

We're future zombies. All six of us. We're talking flesh eating undead that when you shoot us the first time we're going to get back up and require you to shoot us a second, third, and if you really suck at aiming, a fourth time before we stop moving. So the general advice is don't kill the walking biological weapons because it's going to end badly for everyone.

I don't know the sciencey terms Daryl, Beth, and Carol have for their particular zombie AIDs, but George, Buffy and I have a thing called Kellis-Amberlee. Basically what that means is that a filovirus is sitting in us, dormant, waiting for its chance to hip-check our brains out of control and make us start munching on neighbors and the neighbor's dogs and shit. There are a few ways for that to happen: we'll die, the disruption of our nervous system will cause the dormant virus to activate, or we'll come into contact with the live virus. The only way for that second option to happen is if George miraculously starts shedding eye goo, but since she's got zombie eyes that isn't happening. See her for details on Retinal KA. However, we'll also go into amplification--re: zombification--if we experience physical trauma.

In short, we're toxic and killing us, Daryl, Beth and Carol is a very bad idea. It's also a very bad idea to touch our blood or other bodily fluids at any time. All you need to become infected is by coming into contact with micron levels of our fluids that fit into a space smaller than this period .

Lastly, if we tell you to shoot us, you shoot us.

[info]crossbowed

So, we've gotta pay for stuff here, then. But we can't get any decent jobs if we don't give 'em our blood. Which, as Georgia and Shaun have already said, would be a damned stupid idea. My blood's better stayin' just where it is.

So what the hell are we supposed to do? I don't need much, but unless ya want me shooting rabbits and squirrels in the park, I'm gonna need something.

[Filtered to Cuthbert]

I ain't against helpin' to defend the people here. But I ain't doing anything that everyone doesn't agree with. Seen too much of that sort of stuff go to hell in a handbasket.

Let's have a discussion.

Roland seems to have touched a nerve, so I'm officially asking everyone here:

1.) Do you feel unsafe? If so, who/what group are you worried about?
2.) If you do, why? Please mention whether or not this feeling is colored by previous experiences in your own timelines.
3.) What are some ideas you have for alleviating this problem, that you think could be implemented? We all have ideal solutions, but let's focus on pragmatics.

If you don't feel comfortable addressing some of these questions publically, feel free to either tell me privately in some way or say you don't feel comfortable. It's fine, but if you don't say anything at all, even to abstain from answering, we can't know your thoughts and consider them.

In terms of ideas, so far there's been Roland's suggestion of a protective force (which I object to, but I'm one vote). I'd also like to suggest the idea of escorting people, or setting up checks of some sort within the community for those who are interested.

[Filtered from the Council]

So I was about town today and I took a trip to the shooting range now that they think I'm old enough and they'll let me in. It's a proper interesting place, so it is. Anyhow after I was done shooting I got talking to a fellow who works there, turns out he's with the organization of local folk who want to stand with us, the MVCADR.

He reckons he'd do well holding a class for us folk. The ones of us who aren't exactly in need of a class, as it happens, only to demonstrate what we're capable of. It's only a few days, and we'd get proper...certified by the NRA and apparently what that means is that folk in this world would actually give us credit for our skill with firearms. It's a way for them to recognize the training we've put in back in our own worlds, so I reckon.

Would any of you folk already proficient but not certified by this America be interested in the notion? It's not suited to beginners, so it isn't, but I know there are more than a few of us well beyond that point.

[Filtered to Daryl]

Sai Dixon? I've taken note of all your efforts to protect folk from zombies and such, so I have, and I'm fair impressed by it. Might I ask what your view is on needing protection from the authorities here?

List of problems with this planet. Note: this is not an exhaustive list.

1. Can't find my spaceship. Can't find a replacement spaceship
2. No robots
3. No Sub-Etha Net. 'Internet' is boring and 2D
4. 'Computers' are practically stone age
5. Lots of humans are annoying
6. No way of getting to Islington
7. Can't find the Guide
8. Gravity's on all the time
9. The sun's still following me
10. No Fanallan rum or splagberry sauce

List of good things about this planet:

1. Coca-Cola
2. Other humans who aren't related to me even if they're weird
3. Thrashbarg's not here
4. It's technically my homeworld
5. A few potentially not-boring people
6. Getting to play with practically archaic programming languages
7. Chucking stuff at the barrier and watching it bounce
8. Planet is still here and not so much hyperspace dust
9. Potential to scare locals with space-time-probability and aliens talk
10. Having my own living space

[info]choosestolive

I didn't exactly question it because I figured I was just dreaming. And the opportunity to take a shower was far too enticing and it was nice to actually sleep on a bed but I'm starting to think that this isn't a dream.

It feels like nothing was really explained or anything and I'm starting to freak out a little. As much as my sister is going to freak out when they find that I'm gone. And I'd kind of like to go back now.

That lady who only just arrived, Rose? She said that she was shot. That she died. So did Jeremy Gilbert, before he arrived here.

We're not all dead, that wouldn't make sense, but I do wonder. Do you suppose it works the other way? If someone died here, would they disappear and end up back home as if nothing had happened?

I know there ain't any Walkers in this town now, but if any show up, you guys are utterly fucked. You know that, right? None of the doors on yer houses is reinforced worth shit, and you've got 'em so that the Walkers can just tear their way in.

Yeah, I know there ain't any, but if I bump off in my sleep tonight, how many of ya am I gonna eat alive before ya put me down? How many of yer houses am I gonna break into?

I'm just sayin' that we should maybe take some precautions, since this ain't a fuckin' joke.

There is a word in elvish, both the High Speech and Sindarin, called estel. It cannot be translated directly to the common tongue used here, as it is more a philosophical concept and thought than a word, but may be best understood as 'faith' or trust, and the hope that comes therein.

The elves hold estel as the belief that Eru Ilúvatar--the Creator of the World that Is--is good, and his designs will end well for all his Children, despite our troubles. Estel is a belief that cannot be destroyed by the ways of the world or the suffering that we face therein, as we are the Eruchin, the Children of the One, and He will not suffer Himself to be deprived of us. Not by Himself, our own folly, or any Enemies.

So we hold to estel in even the darkest times and it keeps us from being overcome by the hardships we face in Arda Marred. Despite everything, the Children of Eru see the good in the world, alongside its corruptions and in spite of them. It is the Unmarred within the Marred, estel is the ability to discern the truth of it.

Have faith. It will be well in the end of all things, even unto the breaking of the world.

There's a book on the table by the title of The Gunslinger. I'll not talk about it. Don't press me on it, for your father's sake. I can't...I've made notes in the High Speech. In the little notebook. Read them when you're well, say true. I'll be back...when I'm back. The medicines are in the kitchen, and enough food to last.
