He watched the man. No. He wasn't a man, he was something other and inexplicable in that way. Something strange but not beyond the likes of most things Elodin had seen. Not the strangest. So he watched him, from the corner of the coffee house nearest the window. He chose the far corner window seat because the window opened and the air could touch his face instead of whisper by on the outside. He'd never abide that in a million years. Never again. He chose to watch the people watching the man because everyone else was following him. It wasn't so obvious in some of them, but there were constant glances his way as if people's eyes should naturally be drawn to him.

Elodin didn't understand.

Well he did, in a way that his sleeping mind knew and his waking mind did not. It was whispered in the shape of the man's Name. It was whispered in the color of it, the feel of it, and burdened by the weight of it. Elodin watched him, and the weight of his gaze was like a mountain.

"Thomas," Elodin said. Not loudly. Not deeply. Not shouting. He said it evenly as if Thomas was sitting across from him and they were sharing coffee and a bowl of grapes. No, the only change was the resonance of Elodin's voice, because when he spoke he left no room for any other sound. Naturally those nearest him stirred and settled, as if they were leaves blown by a gentle wind.

It was damned annoying, really. Feeling like a constant adult-version of the Pied Piper, leading the willing masses back to his room whether he wanted to or not. And it was especially ridiculous in this place, where he wasn't even allowed to use his particular, ah, abilities, for their purpose. No, thanks to Harry, he had to practically get a signed consent form, which burned him not because he had to, but because the other vampires didn't. He wasn't stupid. He knew full-well that they were wandering around compelling everyone as they wished, while he had to deal with people throwing themselves at him day in and day out without ever being able to act on it.

He caught a woman's arms before she could wrap them around his neck and gently - yet firmly - set her aside. He just wanted a damn cup of coffee...why did it always have to be such a hassle?!

That was when he heard his name. He looked up, trying to find where the sound had come from. That sound that was...somehow both more and less than just a sound. He felt almost...jarred by it, which increased his curiosity and the feeling of dread that was growing within him. What was it Harry always said about names?

He saw the man in the corner by the window, and met his eyes for a moment. He had no proof it was him, but there were only a few other people in the coffee shop, and all the others were going to varying degrees of trouble to accost him. He said nothing, but nodded slowly at the other man.
