So I was about town today and I took a trip to the shooting range now that they think I'm old enough and they'll let me in. It's a proper interesting place, so it is. Anyhow after I was done shooting I got talking to a fellow who works there, turns out he's with the organization of local folk who want to stand with us, the MVCADR.

He reckons he'd do well holding a class for us folk. The ones of us who aren't exactly in need of a class, as it happens, only to demonstrate what we're capable of. It's only a few days, and we'd get proper...certified by the NRA and apparently what that means is that folk in this world would actually give us credit for our skill with firearms. It's a way for them to recognize the training we've put in back in our own worlds, so I reckon.

Would any of you folk already proficient but not certified by this America be interested in the notion? It's not suited to beginners, so it isn't, but I know there are more than a few of us well beyond that point.

[Filtered to Daryl]

Sai Dixon? I've taken note of all your efforts to protect folk from zombies and such, so I have, and I'm fair impressed by it. Might I ask what your view is on needing protection from the authorities here?

Shaun and I were already looking at certification, so yes.

I'd hoped that you two might like the notion! You'd be proper suited to it, I reckon.

I can't say that we should be treated equally and refuse to accept the responsibilities accompanying that notion.

I...don't rightly see how that follows from anything.

Certification is important here. I can't expect my own endorsements from home to mean anything, and if I tell that to other people, I need to follow it myself.

That's all.

Aye, I took note that you said such. It's proper peculiar that a three-day certification should count for more here than my years of training at home, but denying the fact does no good.

That, and I reckon if it's a group of us taking the class, it might be fair entertaining in its own way.

It's more that they can verify it. I mean, anybody can show up and say they have years of training. This way they'd actually know.

And it's going to be hilarious.

One would have to be perfect mad to lie about that kind of thing, say true.

Isn't it just? It'll be almost like having you and Shaun in my ka-tel and even the thought of that's a proper amusement.

Mad people exist. And few of them admit they're mad. We might all be mad. How would they know?

I think I'm going to feel bad for the instructor.

How would they know? How would we know, if we were all mad? A madman doesn't know he is. Mayhap we are.

Don't you reckon he'll be amused, too? At the very least we can say that whatever we get up to won't be unsafe, we know better. So mayhap we get more room for hilarity than young lads or other beginners ought to. For certain it won't be much like learning in Gilead.

Shaun knows he's mentally ill. I know that I'm unhealthy and will probably end up mad eventually. Or I would if I don't die first.

Hopefully. And yeah, at least we won't have any accidents. It'll be a painless process.

To be sure you're not actually mad, though, neither of you. You've been...influenced by your environment, I think is the phrase.

I can't speak to your skill. If you hadn't refused to come out and shoot when I'd offered it, mayhap that'd be different, but so it is.

As it stands, I'm fair certain you have a reasonable idea of your own ability.

I don't care if you can attest to my skill or not. It's hardly something I need validated.

In any case I like to know what laws I'm breaking if I'm going to break them. Certification or not, I have and use firearms.

'Course it's not. If it were all about your own validation, you'd be exactly right.

You don't need the certification to own them, so you don't, although if you're concerned with specifics you ought to consult a local lawman.

Likely you are, say sorry.

Only I'll have a word with the fellow who suggested it and see if there's any chance of it.

It's proper unfair and I know it.

It's right foolish, Cuthbert. I reckon I'm a better shot than anyone here, save you, and they'll not even let me onto their ranges. I'm trying to control my temper, say true, but I'm proper furious, so I am.

You're being modest, to be sure; I reckon you can likely shoot better than me and all. But I take your meaning.

If it's going to anger you so then I won't go to the classes. They don't know I've only got a few months in age on you, but you do, and that must make it worse.

They also don't know I've got a few months on you as a proper gunslinger.

But no, do as you will. I'll not have you forced back into childhood as I've been.

Aye, that's so. Save for Sai Georgia who knows the whole of the matter.

Then I'll go, say thankya, but it won't be near so good without you there. It's a pity you couldn't only do as I did and claim to be older.

You'll let me know what the talents of the others are, aye?

Aye, I'll tell thee all that's worth noting from it, so I will.

You might yet. This is a strange place, isn't it just, where a fellow might disappear a few days only to return years older. If it comes to it I reckon we can arrange it.

But this? The certification's not much, Roland. Haven't you already got work that proves they take your skill seriously? That counts for more.
