The internet here clearly has rabbit warrens you could delve into and never return. Some of the information that appears when searched is quite... fascinating. I cannot yet but marvel that people allow such things to be in the public forum.

I know my amusement at this collection of information seems quite odd, but really, people are fascinating. There are whole sections of the internet dedicated to cats of all things.

That being said, there are areas that I find quite fascinating. The amount of research done by high caliber professionals that is available to any who are interested is quite helpful. I find myself reviewing human history with great ease. It is important to see how the teller colors the story.

imam

Islamic New Year is a week away, and I've been putting a little bit of thought into this.

I've managed to commandeer some space at the community centre and will be hosting a dinner to celebrate next Friday evening. Everyone's welcome to come by.

I promise no one's going to force any religion down your throat, but I'll be there as an Imam if you have any questions about the faith. Mostly it's just an opportunity to get together with other people in our community and enjoy some food.

Someone else will be catering so no one has to suffer my skills.

Hello, Madison Valley.

My name is Sydney and I have been here for a couple of months now. In that time, I have been keeping records on the arrivals and departures of the refugees, hoping to discern some sort of pattern.

I have found nothing.

It's been one year since I showed up here, bedraggled and footsore, and started a new life. A lot has changed since then.

Everyone from my world who was here then have left, and another has come, and I've met and made a lot of friends, even very close friends, here, something I never really had time for before. I have a house that I am building slowly with hands and magic, and a business that I own that is slowly growing.

And I feel a sense a peace, here, which I never did back home.

So, here's to Madison, home of the life I have built, and the life I have chosen. Thank you all for welcoming me here.

Earlier in the month I was talking to someone and I was reminded how few connections some people feel here. The phrase has been used in a lot of places but I like the way Bram Stoker said it best: “But a stranger in a strange land, he is no one. Men know him not, and to know not is to care not for.”

I'm used to living without connections but that doesn't mean even I had them back in my world.

They do a good job here of making sure there's a community for everyone. But I know there are some people still searching for more.

I'm usually a live and let live kind of person, but today I encountered a woman who was vehemently, vocally anti-vaccine for her child. What was worse, she trying to dissuade other mothers from getting vaccines for their babies as well.

I should've known better than to try to argue with her, but I did because I really felt horribly for any child who contracts what could've been a completely preventable illness. We live in a time and place where people don't remember how awful it is to watch your child waste away from whooping cough or see their limbs shrivel from polio. They just worry about "injecting chemicals" into their babies' bodies. As if their babies don't get several times those chemicals just from breathing. As if they could somehow be healthier if they were left vulnerable to a disease. As if we haven't already seen outbreaks of measles and mumps from unvaccinated communities.

Unfortunately, none of my logic worked. She still wasn't going to vaccinate her child.
