I didn't really think that getting a job here was quite so easy as I've been hearing, but I finally managed to track down the station manager at WPTF and in fact he wanted to know why I hadn't been in this week. Go figure.

My new boss is pretty cool, I guess. I can eat pizza at my desk, as long as I remember to get him a slice.

Also, your cats are weird. Their heads are so small. Seems like a bunch of them just hang out around the salvage yard. Found one sleeping on an old Ford pickup truck on my way in this morning. Started rubbing his head on my hand.

Do I want a cat? I don't know. Maybe I do.

How is it that so many people warned me about ghosts and lobsters and vampires but nobody had shit to say about the crocodile in the hall? I'm trying to get to the gym and I'm one blanket short of a decent blanket rope, two blankets short of a better one.

JAKE Wanna do pizza later? Crocodile? Is there a Chinese buffet? I already got you something for your 27th, you're just gonna have to wait til you get home to get it, and I still had months to pick up something dumb for your 33rd, so don't rush me.

I just told my boss to get fucked, so it looks like I am free for the foreseeable future. Gotta admit, that felt REALLY, really good.

I think I’ve been here for too long to admit that I just remembered this phone is a thing. Usually it’s just faster to go to whoever I wanna talk to but nobody I know is here and I can’t just go to them and I think I’ve just spent weeks looking for this dog I was following before I got kidnapped by a town because I was going to pet him but I never got to pet him and I’m worried he thought I was going to pet him and then I just never did and he never got petted and I wanted to fix that but I don’t think this town kidnapped him which honestly is a wasted opportunity because Spot definitely looked way cuter than me has anybody seen a dog like medium height, golden fur, a definite good boy. I named him spot but he might not be a spot. I don’t speak dog.

Well as far as abductions go, this is surprisingly not all that traumatic, but that doesn't mean I'm happy about it. Seriously, when will people learn to leave werewolves alone?

The signboard is all well and good, but why aren't any of my calls going through?

Looks like I'll be working at Alpha Pets.

Makes being here seem that much more...permanent.

I know, people have been disappearing, as mysteriously as we arrive.

Doesn't change the fact having a job feels permanent.

I don't suppose we have any experience vet techs in our group of- what are we calling ourselves again? Anyway, ours just up and left town with no notice which seems to be a pattern for this place, so we could use someone ASAP, if anyone's interested.

I hate the idea that you could both just go I've been thinking. As fun as it is sleeping in a place with a homicidal ghost in the basement if it's still, maybe it would be nice to have our own place.

Despite the vampires and the maze and the lobster monstrosities, I could almost like it here.

I was going to suggest someone get their magic and/or science together to check out the weird fog in the elevator because that turning up again seems important.

But we don't have an elevator in the building. Right? Someone tell me I'm not losing my mind. There's only two floors, there's not even anywhere an elevator would fit.

The welcome notice is all good and well, but really? Most helpful would be a nudge toward the nearest bar.

ARRIVAL

The thick, ghastly haze of the mist, once practically opaque to the naked eye, fades and opens up to a nostalgic homegrown New England town. A friendly gazebo, freshly painted white sits on a neatly mown lawn at the center of the town square. Vehicles stop at the redlight while locals cross the street, birds chirp in the trees, and a school bus stops to pick up a few children in oversized backpacks. Pedestrians walk by you without a second glance. Did they not see you suddenly appearing out of nowhere? How could they not have noticed that all encompassing fog? And why doesn’t your obviously otherworldly attire catch their attention? This appears to be a small, close knit community. And it’s clear you’re not from around these parts.

But these are simply the first of many mysteries you’re about to discover.

The further you investigate your new surroundings, the more ominous this seemingly quaint and colloquial town becomes. There’s something dark beneath its pleasant guise. You can’t shake the chill at the back of your neck and the sense that someone—or something—is watching you. Then there’s the odd graffiti on the alleyway walls and the way the locals talk about certain locations. And while the mist is gone, there are places in town that make you reminisce about the mist. Places that feel supernaturally thin. Thin enough to let in whispers from the other side. Or maybe even screams.

And don’t worry if you hear laughter or the jingling chimes of carnival coming from the rain gutters in the street. That’s just your imagination. There’s nothing down there.

Nothing that floats.
