Toomey, the bank manager, is a real asshole. I got lost on my way to the bank today and I never get fucking lost.  I ended up being 5 minutes late for work. Not even five. 4 minutes and 53 seconds late.   I know because Toomey made a point of telling me and made me stay an extra 4 minutes and 53 seconds after work.  He actually stood in the doorway of my office like my to make sure I stayed.   I don't like people being late either, but that was a total dick move, right?

(ooc: this was posted after Eddie got off work. I might not be online later, so I posted it now).

Guess it's my turn to do the introductions. Hey. Buffy Summers. From California and a few years ago. Apparently, you guys already know Giles, Spike, and Faith. We're from the same universe, but oddly not the same time period. I like long walks at midnight, slaying demons, and shopping till I drop. This is not my first kidnapping — interdimensional or otherwise — and I was kind of in the middle of protecting something kinda sorta really big time important so if we could figure out a way home, that'd be great.

I have just one question though: just how many different Starbucks Frappuccinos did I miss from 2015 until 2023?

IC/OOC: Captain Pike's First Get-To-Know-You Dinner

[info]captainquiff
[info]dunwichgame

Captain Pike's First Get-To-Know-You Dinner

Maybe you've seen Captain Pike interjecting his optimism on the network here and there. Perhaps you even commented on his introduction post. Or bumped into him in the corridor at Pickman House. Regardless of how you may have met him — or not met him! — Pike has been paying attention to you. (As any good captain would, of course!) It's his prerogative to get to know his crew. And with the Enterprise in another universe, the Dunwich newcomers have become his new crew. As such, he wants to get to know them. Not just because he's looking for the individuals who can be counted on in a crisis, but to really know and understand the people he's stranded with. Which is why he's decided to continue with his longstanding tradition of 'Bridge Crew Dinners'. Granted, there's no bridge here. But Pike has always believed that a good meal and good conversation can lead to good working relationships, and even better friendships. And that's why you've been invited!
You're cordially invited to dinner with the captain! )

In the past the Gods would say 'Sweeney, I have tasked you with this fucking opportunity, don't fuck it up. Sweeney, you're a fucking fuck up, but I trust you to do at least this much, you Irish eau de fuck up' and variations thereof. So I was rather pleased with the prospect of being offered a job I didn't have to prove myself for or apply to.

But it's not me. I've rambled my way up and down these United States. I've slept in an ice cream van with the air conditioning set on arctic. I've dined with a dozen Jesuses and been served the best hash browns around for bloody miles by Kali. I've done shite that would make ya blush. And now you just expecting me to sit in front of a radio and converse with people that aren't really there like that isn't going to confuse the fuck out my mad noggin in the long run?

Thanks to everyone who offered to help me figure out the controls though. That was mighty nice of you, but I'll leave the station in the capable hands of Mr Cecil Palmer.

It's off to the bar with me now, I'm afraid.

I guess.

Anyone else having absolutely no trouble with identification? I just got a job in the Town hall in their license and permits department. Without any sort of identification. They just took me at face value and hired me.

The good news is that I'll have access to whatever licenses and permits we might need.

I would have made a proper introduction days ago, but like most of you I’ve been trying to settle into this new … habitat. I’m Christopher Pike, Captain of the USS Enterprise. It’s a starship. Pretty fancy. Definitely missing some of her 23rd century luxuries at the moment, but I digress.

I’ve been given the job of town sheriff by the locals. Complete surprise to me, I assure you. But not an unwelcome one. It’s given me the opportunity to do some investigating and as far as I can tell the residents are exactly as they seem—completely unaware of us as strangers. I’m not entirely convinced that this isn’t some kind of advanced holographic program. Regardless, I’m going to continue looking into the town and see if it can help us find out a solution to the Ghost Line. Or, at the very least, point us in the direction of the person or entity who constructed it. In the meantime, I could use some help. Normally I’d reach out to my crew members, but it appears that only one of them arrived here with me and, well, he’s not exactly the man I knew. (No offense, Spock. I’m sure you’re just as logical as the version of you from my universe.) What I’m trying to say is that I have a few extra badges in the office here. If anyone wants to be deputized, let me know.

And for those of you who have found yourself in unexpected careers in Dunwich—maybe we could create a kind of information network with each other. I’ve been subtly questioning the locals here at the station. No one has shared anything too useful yet, but you never know! I’m optimistic. Also if any of you find yourselves in a scrape with local law enforcement, give me a call. I’ll see what I can do.

On a semi-related note, I’m on the hunt for individuals interested in scouting some of the terrain outside of town. If you’re keen, drop your name so I can make a list.

[ooc note: deputy job requires AC career fulfillment]

So I know this place is crazy and no one can explain why we're here or what's going on with this town. But I have good news.

There are oreos at the gas station.

You're welcome.

Somebody, presumably from City Hall? offered me a job as assistant to the District Attorney. I turned them down to see how they'd react, but not before asking them questions like, what happened to the last person who held the position, and the name of the current D.A. They were cagey, avoiding an answer.

[Private to Those Who Were in the Infinite Agency and Still Remember]
I've been told that when I was with you in the Agency, I told everybody how my senses were enhanced. I'd really appreciate it if you can keep that secret among yourselves. Maybe it's stupid of me, but I feel more comfortable that way, and if I do end up revealing what I can do, I want it to be on my terms. Thanks.

Per Ms. Romanoff's request, I have completed a full geographical study and analysis of the border location of the 'Ghost Line,' including its distance and relation to Dunwich town proper. I have attached the map to this message so that the rest of you can avoid inadvertently crossing the barrier. I apologize for any error in scale. I am not a cartographer, but I did attempt to be thorough. At the bottom of the map you will see a ratio indicator to improve the mathematical preciseness of the drawing.

Please note the areas where the edge of the border converges with vehicular thoroughfares and bodies of water. Although I have not yet tested the outcome, I surmise that crossing this border whilst swimming could result in physical damage to the corporeal body left behind. It should also be noted that local vehicles and residents do not appear to be affected by this anomaly. As such, traversing a busy street or causeway while entering this 'Ghost Realm' may prove fatal if they do not see you in time.

Also, I am Spock. My appreciation to Mr. Boorman who assisted in this endeavor.

You may state your questions below.

All this talk about people being handed jobs makes me wonder what this town thinks I'd be good at. It's way too small for almost anything I've done before, especially given we can't leave, which also means we can't go more rural. Anything dealing with people for a standard eight hour shift is going to be getting towards too long for me to spend focusing on trying not to miss what anyone's saying. I'd slow down a commercial kitchen for the same reason. I doubt I could sell enough art to live off without moving around different towns.

Face it, historically my most marketable skills have been flirting, fighting, and noticing way more than people expect. I need either more crime or more culture. Otherwise my best option's probably something over the internet and that could take a while to set up. I'm still hoping they'll pull something off back at the agency and we won't be here that long.

So Derleth says that I'm the history of science professor. Mid semester.

How does that make any sense? That's not- how do I teach an entire course in half a semester? With spring break in the next, what, month? I know I've experienced some weird stuff in my life recently, but I haven't been handed a job like this before.

I think I'm gonna need more tea. Is this happening to any of the rest of you?

WELCOME
Your new life starts here.
CODE BY

ARRIVAL

The thick, ghastly haze of the mist, once practically opaque to the naked eye, fades and opens up to a nostalgic homegrown New England town. A friendly gazebo, freshly painted white sits on a neatly mown lawn at the center of the town square. Vehicles stop at the redlight while locals cross the street, birds chirp in the trees, and a school bus stops to pick up a few children in oversized backpacks. Pedestrians walk by you without a second glance. Did they not see you suddenly appearing out of nowhere? How could they not have noticed that all encompassing fog? And why doesn’t your obviously otherworldly attire catch their attention? This appears to be a small, close knit community. And it’s clear you’re not from around these parts.

But these are simply the first of many mysteries you’re about to discover.

The further you investigate your new surroundings, the more ominous this seemingly quaint and colloquial town becomes. There’s something dark beneath its pleasant guise. You can’t shake the chill at the back of your neck and the sense that someone—or something—is watching you. Then there’s the odd graffiti on the alleyway walls and the way the locals talk about certain locations. And while the mist is gone, there are places in town that make you reminisce about the mist. Places that feel supernaturally thin. Thin enough to let in whispers from the other side. Or maybe even screams.

And don’t worry if you hear laughter or the jingling chimes of carnival coming from the rain gutters in the street. That’s just your imagination. There’s nothing down there.

Nothing that floats.
