You know, I never thought I'd say this, but I had an excellent first day of school! In all my life, being the new girl was never very fun, and then going to a new school was always stressful. The only good thing that came of the last time I went to a new school was meeting Lesley. Never really made a huge group of friends or anything. We Mistakes might not be very...typical...but I'm glad I got to start with a lot of friendly faces.

[Private to Under-18s]

Is it...

Does anyone else just...not remember the weekend?

Maybe I was just a bit worked up for the first day of classes...

FRIENDS AND FAMILY

By the looks of the network I'm not the only one but I went and got a test at the drugstore just in case. Because I woke up this morning and didn't remember anything and I was so damn scared I'd slipped up.

I'm clean though. I just don't know what happened over the weekend.

If I was the only one I would've thought I just blocked out Carter's date night

So hey, question for everyone: does anyone actually remember the weekend? Is it all of us?

Any local businesses have cameras we can check for, I don't know, giant alien invasions or something? Or, can we check the town for a giant gas leak?

People don't really eat different food every day, do they?

I feel like this place is definitely going to do something terrible for Halloween, so how about we have a party earlier in the month instead, like Friday 13th, postponed to the 14th if it does something to mess with us on the Friday? Saturday the 14th. Costumes but not necessarily scary?

Well, been here a week or so now and realize...I don't know how to go about being in school. I realize it's strange for a 16 year old to miss school, but even if my best friend isn't here, or even my snooty cousin, and even the ghost James who haunted my school is absent, I still want to go.

Even if only to make some friends.

Please tell me there are other teenagers here? I feel a bit...lost and alone?

Plenty of ghosts around, I've noticed, more even than back in London. But ghosts aren't nearly as good company as someone my own age. Surely there have to be more of us?

Help?

These phones are quite a bit fancier than the ones back home. Would anyone mind telling me where and when I am? I do end up in other times but never outside London and this definitely doesn't seem like London. The person who left this just sort of ran off, and I saw there was a place to post and...help?

I'm Gwen Shepherd. An hour ago it was 1912, but it seems like not quite 2010 either.

...I definitely don't look dressed for this time...

ARRIVAL

The thick, ghastly haze of the mist, once practically opaque to the naked eye, fades and opens up to a nostalgic homegrown New England town. A friendly gazebo, freshly painted white sits on a neatly mown lawn at the center of the town square. Vehicles stop at the redlight while locals cross the street, birds chirp in the trees, and a school bus stops to pick up a few children in oversized backpacks. Pedestrians walk by you without a second glance. Did they not see you suddenly appearing out of nowhere? How could they not have noticed that all encompassing fog? And why doesn’t your obviously otherworldly attire catch their attention? This appears to be a small, close knit community. And it’s clear you’re not from around these parts.

But these are simply the first of many mysteries you’re about to discover.

The further you investigate your new surroundings, the more ominous this seemingly quaint and colloquial town becomes. There’s something dark beneath its pleasant guise. You can’t shake the chill at the back of your neck and the sense that someone—or something—is watching you. Then there’s the odd graffiti on the alleyway walls and the way the locals talk about certain locations. And while the mist is gone, there are places in town that make you reminisce about the mist. Places that feel supernaturally thin. Thin enough to let in whispers from the other side. Or maybe even screams.

And don’t worry if you hear laughter or the jingling chimes of carnival coming from the rain gutters in the street. That’s just your imagination. There’s nothing down there.

Nothing that floats.
