I had a very interesting experience auditioning for Hairspray. I was excited about being involved - not only do I love performing, but I also love the musical with it's challenge to racism and the status quo. Especially considering for this show, the director was so insistent on gender blind casting. Perhaps we'd also see non-heterosexual relationships depicted on the stage. Perhaps even a lesbian one, which doesn't happen in mainstream musicals at all.
And yet when I expressed my ideas in my audition, the supposedly openminded director told me I would not be cast in the musical and was told to leave as he 'did not need divas'.
It's good to know that even here at IVI, sexism, male privilege and heteronormativity still rule the day.
In any case, congratulations to all of those who were cast.
