This place is bittersweet.

Did you know in France they do not have an Easter bunny or chocolate eggs traditionally? Chocolate comes in the shape of bells with wings. This ties into the belief that the bells "fly" to Rome to be blessed before returning to their home in France. As a marking of the time, church bells do not ring from the Thursday before Easter till Easter morning.

Why is this important? Because it is one of my favorite family traditions and Friday I will be making chocolate bells for everyone. So, I am inviting all of you to come to help me. Do we really need an excuse to make and eat chocolate?

In France, Valentine’s Day is not really a big deal you might be surprised to know. It is only for couples and typically married or serious ones at that. No friendly gift giving to friends or classmates, they might get the wrong idea! Most of you I am sure know of the Duke of Orléans who sent the first Valentine’s letter, so how about I tell you about what the French call the Lottery of Love. It was once a tradition for all singles to be matched up with the singles in the house closest to them. However, men that did not care for their match often left the woman to seek others. The scorned women would then build huge fires in the street to yell and curse the man who abandoned them. Things eventually got so out of hand the French government had to outlaw the tradition.

Let’s pretend something witty is written here. Something more than I want to go home and I am glad all the bad guys are gone. Though it was nice to have something to do.

Lily, let’s do that thing we talked about? Now that things are quiet.

I think there's a market for magical gummies that have results more pleasant than the Skiving Snackboxes.

This will require research on how to brew and distill adult beverages, and what flavours they pair with best. We want the benefits of drinking without the side effects, so a way to marry the substances that takes the edge off without the hangovers, liver problems, and general destruction of brain cells. And it will require packaging that does not appeal to the impressionable youths (we'll work out a line for them), while appealing to the adults of a drinking age.

With Mum leaving, I pulled my head out of my arse and realised that our time here could be cut short. I don't get to know you anywhere but here, and I want to make sure we don't miss that opportunity.

I need to know how old you are, because that's how many birthdays and Christmases I need to make up for. I also want to know you. So, hi. I'm your uncle Fred. Who are you, and who are your parents? I know who we lost, and I'm not really worried about being told things you wouldn't want to tell someone else because I've already had the worst news.

I hate that people leave, but full disclosure, I die. It's the ultimate leaving, right? So here's my zen thought that came from a lot of less than zen moments in the last month: embrace what you have for as long as you have it. This is one hell of a second chance for some of us.

I don’t know how many of you are aware of this yet, but grandma Molly isn’t here anymore....

On the one hand, I hope everyone has a good winter holiday, whatever one you celebrate.

On the other hand, it doesn't really feel like Christmas without my brothers and my parents.

Tomorrow is Le Réveillon de Nöel! I have placed my wooden shoes out and bought plenty of food, though it won’t be the same as Maman’s meal. New Orleans celebrates it too, so it’s a shame we’re back in New York. Anyhow, it’s a really long meal that takes place at midnight and ushers in Christmas.
