I've not read much Hugo fic, so I didn't really have much idea of him as a character, but I love the way you've drawn him: such a vivid glimpse into the kind of person he is, obsessed by detail and fluid with words, just like his mum. Lines like this finely-poetic one -- Grass and grace, broom wax and nighttime air -- help characterize him so well. This version, warts and all, is my head-canon now.
