had he not been Lord Voldemort, the force of it would have brought him to his knees. Right from the start he's so completely self-delusional.

It was right that they should want to do him honour, but he knew that his followers were sometimes overly ready to try to buy his good will. Another great one. He is intelligent, and there's so much method to his madness.

Tom Riddle had despised those children, just as Lord Voldemort momentarily despised Narcissa Malfoy I love the comparison with the orphanage children; the way he didn't understand even then that those kids wanted to be loved. And you link Tom Riddle and Lord Voldemort, and the transition between them, so beautifully.

as if Lord Voldemort tallied points like some sort of damned Hogwarts hour-glass The way he despised everything. And in some cases, he had a point. I've always had my doubts about the whole house-point thing. Though not for Voldemort's reasons (I hope).

though here was no toy Love the way you use language to underline the ancient magic. 'heft', too.

as they should be, but not in the face of their actual betters Perfectly IC line.

a patch of stubble marring his chin. great start to the hair-issue.

her unbound hair cascading over breasts that had once filled Tom Riddle's hands and still occasionally filled the Dark Lord's imagination, her skin -- always so tantalisingly pale and markable -- gleaming in the candlelight. Wow. Another great Riddle/Voldemort link. And who but he would describe a skin as markable?

She had kept the habit, after all these years. . . Intriguing.

Albus Dumbledore, a man who might have been a Slytherin Agree!

through her heart, through her sense of duty, though her fear for others, through her desire to believe that she was making a necessary sacrifice. Very believable assessment.

for she was a pureblood, and bright, and worth cultivating. Oh, yes.

He'd never expected an equal, but he'd thought that there could perhaps be a helpmate. Utterly IC. And such a beautiful echo of the 'second in command' statement.

He would be the air itself, his pleasure unsullied by anything corporeal. You've built up so strongly to this ultimate fantasy!

He was the Dark Lord of All, and there were many paths in the forest of his power, many rooms in his mansion. It has been said before, but it's such a great line. Many rooms in his mansion, indeed.

And the end is chilling. He could. And Severus couldn't refuse, or he'd lose Voldemort's trust. Scary.

A great story, and a wonderful take on thegildedmagpie's universe!
