I find you guilty of demanding too much plausibility from your voodoo sadism porn! *gavel bang*
Ah, but Your Honor, there are mitigating circumstances. You see, the Gilded MP does write plausible voodoo sadism porn (and scorching hot it is, too, if I may beg the Court's indulgence), so I feel I'm justified in raising the issue of believability.
I'm with you on canon Tom/Minerva. It makes sense on so many levels. Before DH was published, I would seriously have bet real (Muggle) money that some sort of Tom-Minerva connections was going to play a part in the denouement. Why else set things up so that they would have been at school together? It's like Chekhov and the pistols: if pistols show up on the wall in Act I, they damn well better be shot off before the end of Act V (paraphrase; I don't know if C actually said "damn"). I'd love to know whether JKR initially intended to make the connection relevant and then found it didn't fit, or if she just hadn't thought deeply enough about the intersections of her various time lines.
I'm very intrigued by the rape-as-redemption trope. It definitely works here, although I hadn't thought of the story in quite those terms until you mentioned it. But I love how it fits in.
