I think BDSM, or D/s, as a kink, does appear disturbing to some people. Some folks think it = perversion. Why would someone want pain, or to submit in the extreme, or even dominate? There are lots of reasons, but the living out of a D/s relationship, I think, can actually be therapeutic; not that that should be the goal of it, but sometimes it happens that way. Snape is mean in this, but I also think think he realizes what Harry needs and that there's no shame in it, which is the best sort of dominant that Harry could've encountered.
