I wonder why there’s so little love for the first person in the fandom.
That's a good question... maybe it's because it blurs the distinction between fiction and RL a bit too close for comfort... first person is for personal posts, the "I saw this girl at the bus stop the other day and she was so beautiful, but I just looked at my feet and waited for the next bus," and third person is something that can easily signify the transition between real and fake: "Hermione saw a beautiful girl in the Leaky Caudron and flirted with her and then she took her upstairs and they had hot fulfilling monkey sex."
Maybe first person is much more acceptable (or at least less of a weird-out) in published fiction because the venues for the RL and the creative fiction are so separate for those authors. IDK. I just know that it was slightly weirding me out every time I went back into the fic and started writing "I"; even though I knew in my head I wasn't writing about myself (duh!), there was still that odd feeling. So maybe if I'm not the only one who gets that, it could be one of the reasons first person doesn't show up all that often in fanfics... hmm, this is really interesting to think about! *rambles*
