Recently, I had the opportunity to meet some of the new Chi Omega pledges. Lovely group of ladies.
Although, I will say, that one in particular... Well, she's claiming to be an English Major, but said she doesn't like to read very much. I don't know about you, but that seems like a bit of a conflict of interest. In any case, this confession arose when we were discussing Jane Austen.
Me: Of course Pride & Prejudice is a staple, but I quite preferred Sense & Sensibility.
Pledge: That's the Kate Winslet movie, right? It's soo old.
Me: Not that old... Not nearly as old as the book on which it's based, after all.
Pledge: Oh right. Have you seen The Lizzie Bennet Diaries?
Me: No?
Pledge: It's great! It's basically that other book you mentioned, Pride &... Whatever. Anyway, it's like a tv show but on YouTube, and Lizzie is so funny! Plus, when Darcy finally showed up, oh man... He was just like... THE CUTEST, you know what I mean? And Jane is like my style idol. I want to learn how to do my hair like her.
The conversation continued, but I'm not going to transcribe it further. I'm still not over the fact that this young lady only consumes classic literature through tv and film adaptations.
But she was right about the YouTube show. I spent the whole weekend watching it while I was working on the seating chart for my wedding. Admittedly, I actually spent more time watching than working. Still, it was a pleasant way to spend the weekend.
