WEEK TWENTY-TWO
PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN

After the seventh day at precisely 1:32 AM, the campus once more...

Wait a minute. Why is the campus gone?

Where there was once a small pocket of a New England college campus, is now a handsome galleon style ship. Think The Black Pearl, The Queen Anne's Revenge, The Endeavor, etc. You awake on various places on the ship in hammocks and in period appropriate attire. The captain's and officer's quarters remain locked and inaccessible.

Anyone know how to sail a ship? Well, at least that part is covered. The ship appears to sail itself. Where it might choose to take you, however, is another matter. Making matters more complicated? The Derleth is an infamous ship in its own right, and some of you might strangely have a reputation in these waters...

DID YOU TOUCH THE MONOLITH?

Wait, something good can come from touching the monolith? Yep. If your character touched the monolith, they get to know three facts about the current world everyone is in. Essentially, you get to give those characters a little bit of OOC knowledge about this fandom world. See the comment sections below to let the mod know what three facts you've chosen.

Good fact examples: The lore about The Derleth ship itself. Basic awareness of an infamous pirate known as Jack Sparrow. There's a famous black pirate ship called The Black Pearl. The basic jist of the pirate port, Tortuga. The pirate code. The ritual required to use the fountain of youth. Mermaid lore.

Bad fact examples: The entire plot of the first movie. Meta knowledge that Pirates of the Caribbean is a film franchise starring Orlando Bloom. Not picking any facts up front so you can cherry pick as things come up during the week to benefit your character. (Pick a person, place or bit of lore. If you need help, you can ask the mod to pick for you.)

PLOT PROMPTS

You may pick one plot prompt per character. These are not required but may give you ideas of things to do with your characters during this plot. You are responsible for running your characters' plots. Be silly, feel free to run your own NPCs, reach out to other players to get in on the fun with you. Your options are:

WANTED FOR PIRACY. How? Do you have an AU from this world? Perhaps another Derleth ship has travelled to this world before. Whatever the case may be, you're a well known and wanted pirate. Wanted by both law abiding citizens and pirates your previous self may have cheated and swindled. You scallywag!

FOUND A TREASURE! Arrr! You get to go home with a piece of treasure. The mod will randomly roll to see what you get. It could be a magical artifact from the films, a small chest full of treasure, or RUM. The campus has been dry for like a whole week, people. How terrible.

YOU HAVE/ARE THE TREASURE! Oops. You have something of value that would make a man rich beyond measure. People will come after you to steal what's yours! You must defend it! Maybe you even lose it? Hopefully not!

PLOT SCHEDULE

DAY ONE. You wake up at sea on The Derleth. That's weird. The campus has never transformed itself like that before. At least it seems to be sailing itself. Just watch out as the rigging shifts.

DAY TWO & THREE. The ship appears at Port Royal. You can stay here for the entire plot if you like, or get kidnapped by another crew, whatever you like. Unfortunately the Derleth has attracted attention and a pirate attack is imminent.

DAY FOUR. The Derleth escapes and is at sea again. Did you escape with it or end up somewhere else?

DAY FIVE. Battle at Sea! The Derleth is too pretty a target not to go after. Is it pirates? The British royal navy? East India Trading Company? ...What kind of mod would I be if I didn't make it all three? That's right, three small armadas of experienced sea farers are coming after The Derleth. It would hardly be sporting otherwise.

DAYS SIX & SEVEN. The Derleth sinks! Thankfully, there's a mysterious island nearby for everyone to end up stranded on. What's going to happen at the reset? What's on the island? Is it safe? Is there treasure? Who can say! (Well, the event post that day probably will.)

SOURCE MATERIAL & RESOURCES
  • All five Pirates of the Caribbean movies are on Disney+ right now. I didn't even know there was five, tbh. Yes, I watched them all.
  • Don't know anything about ships? That's okay, your character might not either. But have some diagrams of pirate ships to help you out a little. Here and here!
  • Have this History Channel special. Or if you want something less "but aliens!" here's another historical youtube video you can watch.
  • Timeline-wise, eh... look. The PotC was not super concerned with continuity. It's hard to say. The movies happened in the background. This plot won't interact with the films directly.

PLOT FAQ:

So we wake up in pirate clothes?

Up to you if your clothing this week is pirate like or more respectable, as long as it fits the mid 1700s vibe.
Do we get to keep the clothes?
Yep.
Do we have to stay with the ship?
Nope. You can go off and do your own thing if you want. At the end of the week you'll reset back on campus so go as far as you like and explore the parts of the world you're interested in.
Can we meet characters from the movies?
No, but you may hear about them and what they're up to. I don't feel like NPCing them so they're background only. You can make up your own original NPCs to interact with your characters.
Are you doing injury rolls?
Not this time. If your character gets hurt, you decide when, how and what. Whatever makes the most sense in the context of RP and the story.
Isn't PotC kinda problematic?
For any number of reasons, sure. Just don't write those parts, please. Focus on the swash and buckle.
