At the risk of tempting Derleth's wrath (or sense of irony), I'd like to take this moment of down time to suggest something. It's come to my attention that there's a lot of people who don't know where to go when in need of various skills. Magical healers, doctors, wizards/magicians/sorcerers, people who can sew or cook, etc.

Basically, I'd like to organize those of you who would want to volunteer your skills to the other Derleth residents. You don't have to volunteer if you're not comfortable with people knowing what you can do, but for those of us who would, I'd like to give them a place.

Then maybe the Welcoming Committee could add this to their note, and we could add it as a pinned sort of post on the network so that it's there when you need it.

If you're interested, let me know what skills you're offering.

THE CHALLENGE
Comment below with a flash fiction narrative about your character this week. It could be from any day this week you feel inspired to write a micro narrative; from day one, to what they got up to in Port Royal, to some of the events that will happen afterward.

WHAT IS FLASH FICTION?
Flash fiction is a story that is generally between 100 - 1,000 words. Basically, you should be able to fit the narrative into a single comment on the page. What makes a good narrative or story? The flash should include (1) a character, (2) in a place, (3) with a problem that may or may not end up resolved. That's it, really.

RULES? REWARDS?
As long as your piece of flash is 400 words or more, it will count as one piece of AC. Other than that, I don't really have any rules since this challenge is experimental. (You can title or date your piece of flash if you want in the subject, but you don't have to.) It's been a long time since I've run a game since [info]noexits, but I do miss throwing down OOC RP challenges from time to time. If you guys get into this, we may do this format again in future plot weeks or I might come up with new challenges to give you prompts when writing.

IC OR OOC?
I know I keep putting OOC informational posts into the IC community. (JFC, me.) It's because they're relevant to the plot or the story. This post may be OOC, but the comments should all be IC. Ask questions in the #ask-the-mod channel in discord if you have them about this challenge. Thanks! ♥

I'm not one for speeches, which is fine by me since I'm not really great at giving them. Took some hits today in the form of residents. It appears that Dan Torrance is not waking up, kind of like how Barnes did a while ago. If any of you doctors want to make sure he's physically fine, I'd appreciate it. If any magicians want to see if there's something they can do, I think that'd be good.

There seems to be enough stores to last us the week, assuming that refrigeration isn't an issue. There's not much in the way of meds, but I know some of you are used to less than more.

Keep an eye out for land. If you see any, alert us ASAP. I'd like to send fliers in that direction to see if we can get off this ship.

I must admit, it has taken me more than a few days to adjust to finding myself here, which I am certain is a common thread among most everyone that has arrived, yes?

Anyways, I am finding myself a bit restless at the moment. Suggestions of how to pass the time? I have seen some inquire about sparring partners, which I would be interested in, though I'm not sure I am equipped to spar with anyone that doesn't have some sort of advanced strength.

I'm not sure if I've been here long enough to appreciate this week as much as some of you, but I appreciate it all the same. I've even started to get used to the monolith, as unnerving as it still is. Mostly I just desperately miss my brother. We've never been apart a day in our lives - the same with our parents, and really all of the circus staff, but Widget is the one I most often find myself reaching out for. It's probably a twin thing.

I must admit that my curiosity regarding nightmares has persisted, and yet I do not know if touching the monolith would result in as much for me. May I ask what the difference is between a dream and a nightmare? What is it like?

But I also must confess that I do not know what to do with Spot. I watch him sleep, and he likes to chase strings. Sadly, he also likes to jump on my work surfaces, and yet I bring myself to discipline him. Lacking the Enterprise databases, I would very much like your assistance in such.

I get it. The monolith is very exciting. But it appears we suddenly have an insurgence of animal activity in the area and as such, I have taken it upon myself so generous and altruistic I know to help resolve the issue of where to house these semi-domestic creatures.

This is your only opportunity to weigh in on where the as yet unnamed Animal Housing Facility should be. If no one offers any suggestions I'm just going to put it up wherever I see fit. So, if you have a favorite blade of grass in this Hel-hole now is the time to let me know.

Also, if anyone wants to help I'm taking an inventory of potential building materials around campus. I think there's a maintenance room in the gym with some tools, but I'm not much with a hammer so that can be someone else's department.

And to those of you with canines — Clean. Up. The. Mess. I just stepped in nevermind

I wasn’t able to give them a proper send off because of noise issues, but I moved the bodies that were right outside of Butler Hall to behind the Old Gym. So you can safely look out your windows without seeing any decapitated and disemboweled heroes carnage. Considering how no one here has any common sense I expect this view to be ruined before the end of the day. Enjoy it while you can.

Okay, so for those of us who are definitely not leaving the building any time soon... what can we do? Make shift barricades on the front doors or something? Distract ourselves by trying to cook food really quietly? Collect mattresses and attempt to manually sound proof one of the rooms maybe? I'm not freaking out, I swear. Welcome to Derleth.


I am so sorry I could not be there to greet you myself, but I trust you'll find your way around soon enough. Most of the students have not yet arrived for the new semester and so I've arranged for [your?] lodging on campus. You'll find a key in your pocket. Just like old times, eh?

Should the experiment go as planned, for one week we will be able to displace time and space itself. I believe with my calculations we will be able to control the effects and no one shall be the wiser. To anyone not directly involved it will be imperceptible.
