Fascinating.

In my brief but thorough examination of this communication network I have been made aware of the fact that many of you are currently trapped in various degrees of peril. Thus, I will be pithy with my introduction and leave explanation of the paper correspondence to anyone who is safe from danger.

I am Spock. Please direct me as to where and how I may assist.

Varric Tethras/Clint Barton
DAY 1 - MIDMORNING/AFTERNOON | THE WALKING DEAD| PG-13 (may update)

Adventuring!

Varric sighed softly as he moved into possibly the biggest, most dilapitated Human city he'd ever seen. There were big ones in his homeworld, of course, ones where you similarly couldn't see the end. But he'd never been in one that classified as 'ruins', no matter the architecture.

Chiding himself on being dwarven for noticing the quality of the structures, Varric recentered himself on minding the surroundings. It was unlike anything he'd seen before, even by human standards. That wasn't as disconcerting to him though, he'd been through plenty of foriegn lands in his own world. What was worse was the feel of the place, which had nothing to do with the insane amount of fake-stone he was walking over and surrounded by.

Glancing over at the first other being he'd actually spoken to other than the angry, hairy nug who had seemed to decide interrupting its dinner warranted a full-on vendetta of harrassment the past few days, Varric gently hefted the lovely weight of his crossbow as he and the blond human in weird clothes pushed forward into the depths of the city, further back from the same-but-different ruins he'd been staring at for several days. Clint didn't seem too bad, after all, and the last time he'd been hijacked the company had been a lot less amicable. That was enough to give the Dwarf a small morale boost.

Nudging his partner as they walked further and further from the strange but familiar set of buildings, he nodded up ahead.

"Any idea what those signs mean? I can't read the writing," he grunted. Most of them were only half visible, but the characters were strange to him, and they were mostly in squares and without the pictures or shapes that had been more or less standard in his own world to indicate to non-native speakers. Really, what was so hard about making shapes like an anvil for a smithy, an apple or a haunch for a different sort of grocer? He grunted again in irritation and checked his 'phone', the word Clint had told him meant the little black box. The guy had invaluable insight, but Varric was still working it out. "Word on the street is shamblers and a lack of food or water, though I guess somebody already found a stream. We should probably look for grub... doesn't matter who you are, grub's important." Though he wouldn't mind finding a vat of ale, either.

I hear you're building defenses. I scouted out a little yesterday and found some materials, couldn't get them back to the campus so I stashed and marked them. I have a rough map of where I left them, too. If you need help reinforcing anything, let me know, I'm always happy to help.

Natasha

My shoulder's banged up. Nothing I can't ignore and no big deal, but it clued me in that I'm... not super-soldier this week. Still big, still healthy. But I thought you should know in case you're coming up with any plans or anything happens. I've let Sam and Bucky know, as well as my parimeter-partner.

But your sister chewed me out already and I promised I'd tell you, too.

How're you doing?

Edit/Update

Orlin

Hey. Seen you around, first week I was trapped around this mess and had no memories, and you were offering those brain scans. I guess you're a medic of some kind?

Natasha said I should check in with you about a small shoulder-wrench. Personally, I think it's fine. Sore, but still completely mobile and functional. Just aches. I've been keeping it still and not using it as much.

I really don't think it's a big deal, but, I promised Nat I'd check with you. If your.. scanner thing or other resources are better used elsewhere, I'd honestly rather you save 'em.

Exploring northeast I found decent enough sized stream near what was probably a high school. It took me around an hour to walk there - might take less time under different circumstances, but there's a lot between here and there.

I can't guarantee cleanliness at this point, but if we could start fires, we could boil it.

If there's a group that's willing to come out with me, let's make that today's priority. Also, any ideas on transport - I'm open to hearing them.

As it turns out, guns are a bad idea against these zombies. While they are efficient in killing them, the noise draws more and more. The fact that they move slowly is definitely a saving grace. Stay quiet, stay in pairs or groups (I'm talking to you, Vax), and find any long-range weapon you can.

If I find the right supplies, I could probably rig up a decent ballista, but it would take me a few days. If anyone else has suggestions for building up our defenses on campus, let me know. We really don't want the undead to get too close.

There's been some talk about trying to move people from the first floor up to higher floors, just as an added measure of security. There seem to be enough empty rooms on higher floors - plus some peoples roommates are still in the void. It might not be the worst idea.

At least the stars here are familiar - which makes nighttime navigation easier. If anyone needs a crash course in navigating by the stars or finding the north star, let me know.

Some of us made a rough map of the area yesterday. It's incomplete, but hanging next to the doors inside Butler. Feel free to add to it.

Added later:

I'll be doing crash courses in astronomy & navigating by the stars an hour after sunset and an hour before sunrise.

Right now it seems like the campus is safe enough and I think it's better for all of us if we keep it that way, so I want to organize patrols to keep the perimeter as secure as we can. With at least some watches through the night to keep us from being surprised until we know exactly how bad the whole zombie situation is and if anything else is waiting to see if we're really bad at this. I know we'll have people out scouting for food and water, but if everybody goes out at once and comes back to find we have a big problem then it's sort of useless.

Let me know here if you want to sign up. I want to set up at least pairs and keep the turns as short as I can so nobody gets too tired and misses something, but I guess it depends on how many people want to help. We can work out weapons when we know who has them and who doesn't, and if you have special training in stealth and survival things then tell me that too. Night time is going to get interesting with no lights and I don't want to send anybody out who doesn't know what they're doing. And no lying - it doesn't hurt me right away if you lie, but it could probably kill you, so. Don't do that.

So this is a post for all the magic users out there.

I'm attempting to work on the magic issue. There are, as far as I can tell, two possible causes.

One: The flow of magical energy is basically non-existent. Unless any of you have acquired any personal stores of energy or batteries on you, or want to try your hand sleeping with one of the resident gods, there's not much that can be done about that.

Two: The circumstances of the planet are fucked. Thankfully, I do have Brakebills' very own circumstance control panel. If anyone would like to try and provide assistance, I'll get it set up in the library. It has a short range but maybe we can use it to get some wards back up around campus.

And if anyone else has any ideas...?

THE WALKING DEAD: DAY 1

[info]blackwidowed

This week's a huge deviation from the norm in some aspects.

» For most of us, it seems, we're in a world that I'm assuming has been decimated by a zombie apocalypse. We have no water or electricity. The kitchens and clinic have been raided. Even the theater's been picked over for clothing. We are not on the usual Derleth campus. The Green is an overgrown lawn, and the rest of Derleth spreads out from these buildings. Reminiscent of a few other alternate Derleths with full campuses.

» For some, they are on our "normal" campus in the void.

» We can communicate between the two through the network, but that seems to be it at the moment. I would recommend being prepared in case Derleth throws a trick at us and spits one campus into the other, with bonus zombies. It may not happen, but we also haven't had split Derleth's like this so I would be prepared for anything. UPDATE: The TVs on the void campus are showing those of us in the zombie world.

» Butler Hall has returned to what it was when I first arrived: regular dormitories, two people to a room. This could be because we're not on our usual campus. Has anyone tested the wards on the rooms? They weren't working last week. UPDATE: THEY ARE DOWN.

» The zombies, or undead, are shambling so they're slow, but we don't know the layout of this area, so I wouldn't suggest going anywhere alone. You could easily get backed into a corner with a whole bunch of zombies. Most zombie lore says they like to eat human flesh. Need to assess the zombies more.

» Magic appears to be on the fritz. So so super powers for some. If you're experiencing this, please let me know.

» One of the Lokis has been missing since the night of the reset. He was not among our people who turned to stone and didn't return from the ball.

I'm asking you all to please not go outside alone, and do not go without some kind of weaponry. Make the least amount of noise you can, and check in with people often.

I've been updating the list of non-fighting skills. Please let me know if there's anything you want to add.

All right, everyone. I went snooping outside the boundaries of the campus since it doesn't look particularly void-y (I know, I know... don't go anywhere alone, it's a flaw and I swear I'll work on it one of these days when it comes back to bite me harder than I feel like it should) and aside from everything we already know, positive or negative? I have good news, bad news, and worse news. We'll just go in that order, shall we?

GOOD NEWS: It seems we're in a town? City? ...there are buildings around, but I didn't go so far as to find out just how large a settled place we're situated in. Not the middle of nowhere at least, so it might be easier to scavenge ourselves a few things.

BAD NEWS: "Buildings" is about the most descriptive I can be of what's out there in the immediate vicinity. What's around looks long abandoned and in terrible shape, and at least the places closest to us look absolutely torn apart for supplies.

WORSE NEWS: I didn't see many people. Any people, perhaps? I don't know how much experience everyone has with the undead, but what people I did see seemed... that. Shambling, maybe not entirely whole but still making their way around, much more interested in a slow lurch in my direction than conversation. There were only a couple of them that I saw, but I didn't stick around to let them get close enough for a better look at them. I took the most roundabout way back here I could, so hopefully I lost them before I could lead them to our collective doorstep.

So... there's some information for us. Definitely seconding the below wisdom of not venturing out alone, especially if you're keen to get a better look at what's out there. (You know how it is, do as I say and not as I do. Let me learn from your example. Other sage words so you won't get yourself killed out there.)

No power. No water. Awesome.

Is everyone back okay?

Good morning Derleth and welcome to an exciting new week. So far we have determined that we have:

• No power
• No running water
• No food
• No medical supplies

Signs are that there has been some fighting, but hard to say yet if that was the main cause of the situation or a consequence in the aftermath of whatever went down. A lot of us have done this dance before but for anyone who's newer, standard guidelines for a hostile environment - don't go out alone/without telling anyone, advise everyone of any useful information or resources you find, and food and medicine go a lot further when they're handled centrally. If you think you need a weapon or if you have extra you can loan out let us know.

We'll probably want to make bandages from any spare linens we've got around and dig latrines a bit away from the buildings. We can collect limited clean water from toilet tanks if someone hasn't thought of that already, otherwise we need to find a source and set up a means of filtration. If you find large sheets of paper and things to draw with get them to the cafeteria, between scouts and arty types we can try to come up with a map of the area so we know where's good and where to avoid.

Another note for newer people: if you look at the icons on your screen there should be one that links to the skills list. It looks like it might need updating, so if you want to add yourself anywhere leave a comment for Nat.

Last thing for now, if your roommate is one of the ones who didn't come back from the ball please confirm they're safe.

NEW PLOT: THE WALKING DEAD (JULY 1 - 15)

[info]noexitsmod
[info]noexits
WEEK FORTY
THE WALKING DEAD

On the seventh day at precisely 1:32 AM, the campus once more resets. Everyone trapped in the experiment falls unconscious (if not sleeping already) only to wake up sometime afterward in their assigned bed, in their assigned room, in their assigned dorm…

In the middle of a zombie apocalypse.

The campus has been restored to its location in a post-apocalyptic Dunwich, Massachusetts. Your rooms are restored to that of normal dorms, albeit those which have not been lived in for years. The kitchen and supplies on campus have already been raided a dozen times over by survivors, though no survivors are currently to be seen.

It’s going to be a hell of a week.

Thankfully, the campus is not overrun with the walking dead. The zombies themselves are slow moving and pretty easily dispatched. The problem isn’t one or two, or even ten. The problem is when you get overrun by a herd.

Unfortunately, you’re going to have to do some scouting and take risks this week if you want to survive.

Don’t worry, it gets worse.

This is a dead world and not just where humans are concerned. Magic is on the fritz and unreliable. Powers don’t seem to work quite as well or easily as they once did. This world won’t be the cakewalk with the campus powerhouses not being at 100 percent capacity.

It’s like the reality of this world itself just gave up and lost hope.

Good luck. The only thing worse than the zombies? Other human survivors.

CONTENT WARNINGS

  • Not everyone is into zombies. Please be mindful, use warnings and cut tags if describing anything particularly violent or squicky or gross. (Or pandemic/flu-like.)

  • What about the characters of those players? See “The Void” for what those characters will be up to this plot!

NOTES

  • Why “Walking Dead” zombie rules?

    • The zombies are slow, but sound and the smell of your delicious living bodies attracts them. Seems like a good balance of survivable and challenging. (See zombie rules below for more details!)

    • According to The Walking Dead, humans are assholes. So if you want to run into other humans? Good luck. They’re probably a bigger threat than the zombies, tbh. More likely to kill you and take your supplies than like… work as a team because the show has a dark view of humanity.

    • Also yes, if any humans die during this plot, even of non-zombie related causes, you will come back as a zombie. Just a nice little surprise for those familiar with “typical” zombie rules. (Don’t worry, you will be clear of the zombie virus after the reset.)

  • What about vampires, robots, etc?

    • Robots might get pawed at a little if the sound and movement attracts zombies, but won’t get eaten. But once again, the living are the real threat. A robot could be real valuable, even just for parts.

    • Animals and non-human creatures made of flesh are just as delicious to zombies. Protect your alien friends, pets, etc. Normal animals won’t come back as a zombie, but I leave it up to you if your character species would come back as a zombie or not.

    • So vampires. They are technically walking corpses. If they’re quiet, they can totally slip in among zombies. However…

      • If they talk or make too much noise, a zombie might try a bite anyway, but… vampires are already undead. They’re not turning into a zombie.

      • However, once a vampire is bitten, they’re a carrier for the virus, and if they try to feed on any human directly, it will have the same effect as a zombie bite. Oops.

  • Okay but what about powers? Won’t that give people with guns a HUGE advantage?

    • Powers are unreliable to make things more challenging. Nothing more boring than a character waving a magic wand and making everything better for everyone. How fritzy and how unreliable I’m leaving up to you the player so you can have fun with it. Give me some dramatic tension!

    • Zombies are attracted to noise. Want to bring a herd of zombies to your location? Guns are an excellent way to do that and can be heard for miles.

    • How are zombies able to hear, see or smell when they’re walking rotted corpses? IDK, man. That was the one part of The Walking Dead that made no sense to me. We’re just going with it.

  • No roles for injuries or death. This plot is going to be totally player driven as to what you want the story of this plot to be, how you want it to go down, etc. Please, please communicate and check in with line partners.

  • Okay, so explain what’s going on with the campus? Do we still have wards on the dorm rooms?

    • The campus is whole and complete within the world of the zombie apocalypse. It’s essentially one of those AU timelines. (Check the campus map of Yale to get an idea of the size, the part of campus that makes up Derleth is based on the “old campus”.) This also means no woods in the middle of campus, just a field with overgrown weeds.

    • Butler Hall in this timeline does not have magical wards. It is like the very first incarnation of the dorms that were in game; more typical of a college campus. See details here. (Yep, the dorm is changing again! But the room assignments will stay the same.)

    • Power and water do not work. It’s been a zombie world for several years now and humans haven’t maintained infrastructure in most areas. The kitchens are cleaned out of canned goods and non-perishables. Gunna have to explore if you want clean water and food.

  • I don’t know the zombie rules/how they work on The Walking Dead.

    • In this world, zombies are called “walkers” or sometimes “biters”. The concept of zombie movies doesn’t exist in this universe, so no one knew the rules to surviving a zombie horror movie.

    • Your characters can have general zombie knowledge, but it might be conflicting from the zombie rules in this one. Please feel free to have your characters get things wrong! Make mistakes! This is how you create interesting plot moments!

    • The rules in short sentences:

      • Walkers can't run, jog, or power-walk
      • Walkers must look terrifying at all times
      • Walkers need to groan, screech, and make garbled squishy sounds at all times
      • Walkers can't be talkers (no sign of intelligence)
      • Walkers must love to eat living flesh (that is their ONLY drive)
      • Walkers must find fire utterly fascinating (sorry, fire doesn’t scare them)
      • Walkers have to die when someone stabs or shoots them in the brain
      • Walkers can't die until their brain is destroyed (no matter what condition they’re in)
      • Walkers are rarely loners and tend to form groups
      • Walkers can't have hobbies (no Shawn of the Dead repurposing them for retail jobs)
      • Walkers have to be single-minded (See: Walkers must love to eat living flesh)

    • Walking Dead rules the mod has observed:

      • Every living human/zombie capable person has a dormant infection in their blood, and will become a walker upon death
      • However a walker bite will overwhelm the immune system and turn a human into a walker after a day or two of illness
      • Disguising yourself among walkers:
        • If you cover yourself in walker guts, you can disguise your scent and quietly walk among herds though it is VERY risky
        • If you take the time to skin a zombie, it works as a better disguise than guts but then… holy hell that’s grisly
        • If you remove the teeth/jaw of a walker so it can’t bite, and the arms so it cannot reach, it will stop attempting to kill you, and can be a grisly alternative way to disguise your presence among walkers by walking them like a pet -- but are you likely to discover this in a week? Probably not.
      • Some humans have made zombie traps, where they might pack a ton of zombies into a shipping container or other closed off space, and spring the trap open and unleash them among trespassers in their territory-- so be careful!
      • Humans have largely developed small groups and are more likely than not hostile to outsiders; see the wiki for ideas, but since this is a different part of the county than either show feel free to dream up what other groups of survivors might do!

THE VOID

  • Not every player wants to participate in this plot, and that’s okay! At the start of the week, a few people won't be waking up in the zombie apocalypse!

  • Lara Croft, Paul Atreides, Alison Hargreeves, Alina and Hugh Christian will instead wake up in The Void, safe on the Derleth campus that they know. Everyone else appears gone. (Fen is in a sleeping beauty rest this plot.)

  • Thankfully there is still just one shared network. Missing your roommate? They appear to have ended up in the other place, but at least everyone will be able to communicate with one another.

  • On the Void!Campus, characters that turn any tv on will see the zombie world as if it's a movie starring everyone else that woke up there. They'll be able to communicate via the network with the stranded characters. Due to the camera/tv show view of the world, they may be able to give characters a heads up/help using their safe perspective.

    • What shows up on camera? In logs and IC/OOC events please state if this is something that can be seen on camera or not.

    • Failure to specify if a log, thread, narrative or ic/ooc event is visible or not will be assumed as visible on television in the void.

    • As for network posts, private messages will not be seen on camera unless specifically stated otherwise for dramatic effect.

My dearest friend,

Welcome to Derleth.

I am so sorry I could not be there to greet you myself, but I trust you'll find your way around soon enough. Most of the students have not yet arrived for the new semester and so I've arranged for [your?] lodging on campus. You'll find a key in your pocket. Just like old times, eh?

Should the experiment go as planned, for one week we will be able to displace time and space itself. I believe with my calculations we will be able to control the effects and no one shall be the wiser. To anyone not directly involved it will be imperceptible.

Feel free to wander the campus in the meantime. We'll begin the experiment at [muffled] Hall, on Thursday, precisely at midnight.

We'll show them, won't we?

Un Sacrificium Parvis ob Adagnitio.
