After three years on the force in Japan, graduate school here is like a vacation. Our professor asked today how many of us had seen a real crime scene and maybe ten students could say yes, they had.

It will be an interesting school year.

[The Tuesday after the holiday the leading grocery store tabloid publishes a front cover picture of Spider-Man flying fist-first at an armed gunman. The photographer is protected as an anonymous source, but presumably the tabloid paid a pretty penny for a verified photograph from a documented crime and sighting in Brooklyn the Saturday before.

By Wednesday bloggers and Spider-man enthusiasts note that he has upgraded his suit to a slightly different version, of the same design but not quite so reflective and made out of a more breathable material, probably to fight the summer heat. There is a brief "heated" debate about the exact material for only a few days before the rumors die down.]

It never ceases to amaze me that some of the brightest minds in the world can be preoccupied by such trivial things. That two biochemists would waste their time argue over the material of a costumed vigilante's suit rather than doing their jobs, which, incidentally, they're being paid quite well for, is simply baffling.
