[Shortly after 2 p.m. on Thursday, a Gotham area high school is put into lockdown: no one is allowed in or out of the building, and the Gotham City S.W.A.T. is called in. Reports trickle in that there have been three gunmen spotted inside the school, and that they have opened fire on the student body and faculty. At the same time, there appears a small segment on the news about the jailbreak of three inmates on death row.

The assault lasts for ninety-seven minutes. The gunmen injure at least nineteen students, although the shots are all restricted to the extremities: hands, feet, and lower legs. None of the students’ wounds are close to fatal. The school’s faculty are not so fortunate. Every single teacher is shot and killed, as are the principal and vice-principal. The only adults left alive are the janitors and the secretaries.

By the time S.W.A.T. moves in, the shooters have turned their weapons on themselves and ended their own lives. They are identified as the escaped convicts. When the police later try to interview the families of the gunmen, they find all their houses deserted. Little do the detectives they know that the families have been spirited away, paid huge sums of money to disappear and start new lives somewhere far away from Gotham. This was the price tag offered by the man who had orchestrated it all. He made sure each gunman died happy, knowing that this was the way he could continue to provide for his family after he was gone.

The only item recovered from the bodies of the shooters is a single deck of cards, tucked into the breast pocket of one of the inmates. Upon inspection, the deck consists of fifty-two different hand-drawn versions of a Joker card. ]
