I've been doing a fair bit of reading in my free time. (Gasps of shock abound, I know.)
But something that I particularly appreciate is learning about historical figures and how they, in times of dire situations, kept their wits about them and successfully navigated difficulties they faced. My latest studies have been in the letters and diaries of Minister Leonard Spencer-Moon. Of course, you all must know him. This is the Minister who began his career as a tea boy in the Department of Magical Accidents and Catastrophes. He worked his way up the ladder and was well-placed, after Hector Fawley's political downfall, to lead. And he lead the country through a period of great international turmoil, ensuring the safety and the well-being of everyone.
Minister Spencer-Moon is a sort of hero of mine.
He was apparently quite close to the Muggle Prime Minister, Winston Churchill. And though the following quote is attributed to Churchill, many scholars of Wizarding History instead suggest that Churchill is quoting Minister Spencer-Moon. And I found this in a recently uncovered sheath of letters. As such, I'll share it with you now without additional commentary:
We live in a country where the people own the Government and not in a country where the Government owns the people. Thought is free, speech is free, religion is free, no one can say that the Press is not free. In short, we live in a liberal society, the direct product of the great advances in human dignity, stature and well-being which will ever be the glory of the nineteenth century.
[MUM]Hello, you. I'm sorry I haven't written in a few days. Dad's quite good at tinkering with Muggle technology. I've put the Warbeck song on a cassette and bought a Walkman - it's this device they used for music playing in the 1980s. Do you think he could find a way to make it undetectable to magic and invisible? Please let me know what he says. I want to bring it up to Oliver, then maybe get the help of Angelina and the twins to mass produce it for our friends.
