Coming through, coming through. Come on, lady with a baby

Who: Rufus & Sasha
Where: Lenore bookstore & cafe
When: Early afternoon

The previous day's conversation with Bella could have gone better. Of course it could have been worse, but when your interactions were limited to one every few weeks, you tended to become something of a perfectionist; every meeting had to be an improvement on the time before it, had to gain a little ground with your desired person. Rufus wasn't so sure that this had been achieved. Would she be too suspicious if he bumped into her again next week? He really did need to find out more about her familiar, and those figs had been a complete rip off, but was that a justifiable enough reason to see her so soon? Hmm.

Still mulling over his choices, Rufus picked up a book his brother had pointed out to him about a week and a half ago and took it to the register to pay. Just like stalking keeping tabs on your ex, maintaining the title of favourite sibling to your little brother required effort and research. His sister probably couldn't even find her way to the children's section, let alone pick out the next book in the series that Blake was reading. That was why she took second place.

Rufus paid for the book, took the bag from the sales clerk and headed off. As he strolled towards the exit a blonde woman waddled in front of him, one hand on her swollen belly as she headed for the door.

"Oh, hey, let me get that for you," Rufus called. Jogging past her, he grabbed the handle and held the door open.

And the Oscar goes to...

Who: Capri and Open!
Where: Random street
When: Late night/really early the next morning.

Capri blushed and gave a sweet, shy smile as they listed the nominees. The envelope was opened, her name was called and Capri rose to her feet. She walked up the steps slowly, mentally rehearsing the speech she would give as she accepted her academy award. She wore a different dress every time she received an Oscar and tonight's choice was truly gorgeous. The long, flowing gown was a mixture of elegance and suggestion, fitting her curves in all the right places while revealing nothing. After all, she still wanted her parents to be able to watch it on tv. The dress colour was a dark pink, almost red, that complimented her colouring perfectly. Her hair had been styled into a classic French knot, with a few wisps of hair left out and curled into ringlets, to frame her face and soften her appearance. Her subtle yet effective make-up enhanced her facial features. She finally reached the podium, took her award gracefully and began to speak. She was careful to display an appropriate mixture of surprise, gratitude, accomplishment, wonder and other emotions blended together.

Of course, Capri knew that it was all a dream; she liked to think of this particular recurrent lucid dream as a rehearsal for her future. What she didn't know was that she had sleepwalked her way out of her home for the first time. And when, in her dream, she finished her speech and walked out to a crowd of reporters - she was, in the real world, moving down the middle of a dark street, clad in nothing but a flimsy nightgown.

A history lesson

Who: Rina and OPEN
Where: Scarlet Oak Library
When: Midday

'I don't get why we have to come here.' No one asked you to come along. 'I can't let you just wander alone! When you do that you find your way right into demons and next time it might try to hurt you. I have to protect you!' Rina tried to hide the amusement that flittered up at the idea of her little, tiny cat familiar trying to protect her from anything but a particularly ferocious butterfly. It would be even more amusing to watch her struggle to get out of the backpack she had borrowed from Darklis, mostly so that she had a place to put the cat. A hoodie pocket seemed to be her preferred mode of transport but as Rina was no vampire and actually felt the heat, she was not about to walk around in one of those when the air was all hot and sticky. There was something she had not missed at all bout this realm: the heat. It could be so oppressive and she had almost felt a flicker of jealousy earlier when she had realized that Darklis never had to deal with this. 'She has to deal with high school. I bet that's worse.' Rina would agree just because of how she remembered her nephews and niece reacting after they went to it. 'Ah! No! You're supposed to-' "Be calm, Trouble, I was just thinking about them, not what happened to them." She was allowed to do that. Just like she was allowed to go to the library when she wanted to get started on picking up the bits of history she had missed out on since her last time here.

At least libraries still smelled the same. Rina breathed in deeply, appreciating the change from too-hot to pleasantly cool as she walked in. 'Can I come out?' No. Like at the coffee shop, Rina was sure that animals were not actually allowed in this place even if they happened to be familiars. She had told Trouble that before they even came and the cat had still insisted on tagging along. "Excuse me," Rina asked the woman behind the desk with a polite smile. "Could you tell me where the history books are?" Instead of getting words she was greeted with a finger pointed in a vague direction before the woman turned her face back to what Rina had learned was a computer screen. Like a smaller TV that you could control. She did not really understand those things, but Darklis had said something about them. Smaller TVs and larger phones, or something like that... she was confused. The sheer lack of any emotion emanating from that woman did not help any. "Um, thank you?" When no response came, Rina readjusted the backpack straps and turned to look for the books she had wanted. "This could take awhile..." 'They're all just books. Pick one and read it, I don't see what the big deal is.' One could just not explain these things to cats. At least all the shelves had labels and a little past non-fiction she came across the history and... "Yeah, awhile." 'Don't you dare look at those World War Two books, Rina, I'll tell.' Rina's fingers twitched and settled instead on something about landing on the moon. She had not known that they had done that! "They went to the moon."

'I knew that!'

it helps to write it down even when you then cross it out

Who: Lizzy and OPEN
Where: The park
When: Mid-afternoon
What: She's writing in her journal... got a lot on her mind.

She paused and bit her pen as she leaned back against the tree. The idea of figuring out what she wanted to do with the rest of her life was kind of daunting. Lizzy stared at her journal and tapped her pen against the pages. There had to be some kind of decision she could come to. The idea of only knowing how many things she liked and what she could possibly do but not really coming to a conclusion was frustrating. Her career didn't have to be picked out right then and there but she had to make some decision. There was a loud, childish giggle and she looked up, watching a mother with her son, tickling him on a picnic blanket. That was cute and it made her smile.

And it made her realize something. Her pen started to fly over the page as she thought about love and one day, one day far, far away, having a family of her own. Lizzy was an idealist and a hopeless romantic. She would have sat there all day, writing about love, about how much she wanted it but she forced herself to stop and look up. It wouldn't do her any good to get wrapped up in daydreams when she had enough serious things to think about. It didn't mean, however, that she really stopped thinking about someone coming in and sweeping her off her feet. Anora flew down from the tree branch she'd been perched on to the witch's shoulder, chirping sweetly.

'What is troubling you?'

"Life. Why do I have to make so many decisions? I'm only eighteen and barely that. How should I know what I want to do with the rest of my life? What do I want to be? Where do I want to be? Picking classes was hard enough and they were practically chosen for me since they're all gen ed classes. Ugh!" The last noise was louder than she intended, likely drawing some attention but she closed her eyes and leaned back against the tree, feeling like she was getting absolutely no where.

chillin' out max and relaxin' all cool

Who: Telyn and OPEN
When: Mid-morning
Where: Starbucks
What: Feeding the addiction

Her time since coming back to Scarlet Oak had been beyond busy. It still was weird to think of Emogen as her mother, the woman who had always been the cool aunt. Her recovery was going well, and the elemental was grateful for that. Of course, her encountering a demon herself wasn't fun but she had Adam, which more than made up for it. There weren't words for how grateful she was that he had allowed her back into his life and that more than that, they were dating again. She knew it wasn't easy but he was definitely worth it.

The thing that she was still wrapping her head around was that she was half-angel. Her grandfather, and the grandmother she had yet to meet, were angels. Her father had been an angel. Telyn didn't think that angels could die so that kind of threw her for a loop. So much happened so fast that it was nice to just grab a cup of coffee and just mull it all over.

Not that she needed anyone's encouragement or a reason to get coffee. The girls at Starbucks knew her and her order well. It wasn't hard, given that she was there so frequently. Soon, armed with an iced vanilla Americano, she was sitting, feet tucked up under her in one of the comfy chairs, glancing out the window as she finally let everything ruminate and stew in her brain. Every so often it was like the Fresh Prince of Bel-Aire theme song was playing in her head because her life got literally flipped up side down. She didn't realize she was softly humming it under her breath as she continued to think it all over, Lucky at her feet, choosing to ignore the random song choice for the moment.

feel the quiet river rage

Who: Nixie and Isolde
When: Late afternoon
Where: The riverbank by Isolde's house

Isolde wasn't sure what all the complaining was about. Her first week of high school had been an absolute breeze. Sure, she may have possibly benefited in some ways... namely the fact that one of the girls in her circle had an older brother on the football team and had declared them all off-limits for freshman brutality. Another friend had a sophomore cousin that was a cheerleader, and she'd invited them all to eat at one of the popular tables. Instant win. The next four years ought to be a cakewalk.

The first week now officially over, Isolde had felt so accomplished with herself that it had brought on a streak of productivity. She'd come home, changed out of her nice school outfit and into a t-shirt, and had promptly cleaned her entire room. Then she decided she might as well get all her homework out of the way to free up the rest of the weekend. Despite the heat, she had decided to do this outside. Not far from their own backyard was a massive oak tree by the river that produced enough shade to be comfy enough for her, and Lambykins had a lot of pent up energy from being inside all day. So Isolde grabbed her schoolbag, a bottle of water, and she and Lambykins set out the backdoor.

Soon, and despite the shade, Isolde was beginning to feel rather like she was melting. She found she was concentrating less on her homework, and more on trying to summon a breeze. She'd only managed to do this for the first time recently, but practicing this seemed much more useful than anything else at the moment. She closed her eyes and leaned against the tree, concentrating with all she had. Lambykins trotted around the tree, and upon glimpsing her, bleated cheerfully at her. Stop when it starts to hurt.
