The past few days had been brutal for Ransom, working from open to close and finishing the day exhausted. He was trying to get as many hours in before school started as he could, hoping to have some extra cash on hand before having to cut back to part time. If he could save enough, he could buy his own car, a necessity if he didn't want to play chauffeur in the coming year. The only reason he wanted to be dropping by the high school was to see Charlotte, not to pick up his younger siblings who refused to ride the bus. Rolling out from under a jeep, he wiped the sweat from his brow and let his dad know the car was done. At least now he could take a break, and maybe get out of there a few hours early today.

Tanith was still not entirely over Domina's decision to let Alistair live, but she had made her thoughts on the situation quite clear and been bloodied up for her troubles. The marks were healed, and the anger moderately cooled. The way she saw it, Alistair was getting exactly what he wanted. A permanent slave in the Ad Gustum dungeons? That was probably exactly the attention he wanted.

She was determined to make sure this was no pleasure trip for him, however. She had forbidden any of the staff from entering his cell, and he had been in strict solitude for several days now. His cell was an empty cement room with not a single stick of furniture in it, and one of his ankles was shackled in the far corner. The iron contained trace amounts of silver in it - not enough to burn through his flesh, but enough to make sure he wouldn't fight it too much. The room was lit harshly by a bare fluorescent lightbulb (out of his reach, of course), and the only way of marking the time was the twice-daily bag of blood that got slid under his door. Of course, Tanith didn't know he was able to astral project or enter people's dreams. That would have greatly displeased her.

Today, she finally decided she had to suck it up and present him to Angeline. After making a brief trip to fetch her young boss, she led the little darling into the dungeons. Hopefully she would be pleased with her ridiculous new toy. Or she would hate him, and give Tanith permission to kill him. That would be lovely.

Freddie had not been sleeping well lately. She didn't know why, though the nightmares or the agitated dreams she kept having could be to blame. If only she could get her hands on some magic pills to sleep comfortably and, as far as she knew, dreamless, she would be settled. Another bad night's sleep made her crave being near water, running, natural water. Just sitting under the shower for hours didn't cut it this time. She needed to clear her head, calm down, make peace with whatever it was that had been stirred within her. Did anyone have such a thing as belated PTSD? Because she kept dreaming about dark caves and chains, these days. the only way Freddie knew to make herself feel better was a lake, a river, somewhere peaceful and with plenty of water.

This was why she had set for the river almost as soon as she had woken up. She ran - or rather, drove - to it as fast as she could, almost like it was calling her as much as she needed it. Maybe her familiar was right, and there was a more personified version of water that knew when she needed it. Freddie liked to think so, at least.

Once she got there, she was quick to park the car and leave it to go sit by the bank. Removing her shoes and socks, she dipped her legs in the water and laid back, letting out a deep breath. She felt a tiny bit better already.
