we've got the same old hands, we've made the same old plans.

Who: Carter, Maya, and Ash.
Where: The streets of Scarlet Oak, within walking distance of the school.
When: Late evening, after nightfall.

Sticking close to the school made sense. With all the people milling around, many of them distraught, driven to distraction by concern and frantic worry, it was a rich hunting ground for any supernatural creature who was cunning enough to pick their prey well. Carter wasn’t going to let them take advantage of the situation and since his encounter with Athena he had taken it upon himself to patrol the area surrounding the school, establishing a sort of perimeter, gauging after careful observation just how far from the school some people were likely to roam and making sure it was clear of vampiric and demonic threats. The last thing any of these people needed, whether they were friends or family members of those trapped inside the school, was for any more tragedy to strike. There was still no news about any of those held prisoner within the invisible barrier, and those outside waiting needed to be able to do so without having to worry about threats closing in from all sides. That was where hunters like Carter came in.

He had caught sight of something a little while ago, something sticking to the shadows that moved too quickly and too quietly to be human. Carter hadn’t needed to get a second look in order to be convinced to give chase but he was careful about how he did so. A single handgun might not be much good against most supernaturals, especially those that his family had always been so focused upon, but he had taken precautions. The ammunition loaded into the clip of the gun was anything but ordinary, much more expensive and harder to come by, and much more damaging to vampires and demons that regular bullets. Carter wasn’t an idiot, he had been hunting solo long enough to know what he was doing.

The sound came from up ahead, slightly and quiet, the scuffing of the sole of a shoe against asphalt. Carter tensed, lifting the gun. There was no flashlight, they always got in the way, they hindered rather than helped, he had always been told, and so instead he had stood in the dark long enough for his eyes to adjust. When he approached the corner it was in shadow that he did so, listening for more sounds around the corner. Nothing. Quiet. Carter knew better than to assume there was no one there.

When he came around the corner it was widely that he did so, clearing the edge of the wall against which he had been leaning only a few moments before. If whoever was there fired a shot or took a swipe at him, they would expect him to hug the wall, and so he did the opposite. Gun raised he aimed directly at the figure ahead, just down the alley.

No, not one figure, he realised quickly, but two. More important still was the fact that he recognised them, the stature of the male and the quiet strength of the female, shorter but by no means less dangerous. Carter kept his gun raised out of habit, knowing better than to assume everything was clear, his brow furrowing a little as he looked at the pair ahead of him. “Maya?” he asked of the shorter, his gaze flicking between the two. “Ash?” What were they doing here? A better question was what they were doing here together, but that could wait.

Desperate times call for desperate measures

Who: Logan, Maya, & Maxine
Where: Scarlet Oak High School -- the Barrier
When: dusk, around 6:30pm

Though he'd stayed behind when Omega had originally gone to scout out the happenings at the high school, Logan could honestly say his curiosity had gotten the better of him. He wasn't even sure if his skills would even be useful, but either way, he had gone out with a few of the others to study the site. There were several groups milling about where they were able, with the National Guard keeping up a loose cordon to restrict access to the barrier itself. Which, if Logan had any say in it, would not be the case if he felt he needed to get closer. How in the world would he be able to reach the barrier if those uniforms stood in his way? He scanned the area, taking in the way the military was switching out their people every so often. It wasn't like he could just sneak up on them, but there must be a way to get closer. Pulling that train of thought up short, Logan squinted in the direction of the barrier, brow furrowed and gaze intense. Turning his head to the side, at the same time that he kept his eyes fixed on the object of fascination, Logan bit down on his lower lip before forming the question he wanted to ask.

"When you came here initially, were the authorities blocking the entrance this way?" He addressed those members of Omega who had actually gone on the reconnaissance mission. Because a thought had just occurred to Logan, and he was damned if he was about to let the idea of someone barring him access dissuade him. He watched as a member of one of the other groups milling about was stopped and turned away when they got too close. Damn it. Anyone in his group could see how alight with purpose Logan was with the idea that he might be able to read something by touching the barrier. He was usually much more withdrawn and reserved, but he was very nearly trembling with his thoughts. Could he use his Finding abilities? He didn't know anyone inside, so that would be a bit of a drawback. That, and he didn't happen to have anything he might use as a focus, nor did he think that any of the other people about would lend something from one of their children. That would just be an odd question to ask aloud. It wasn't that Logan was shy or ashamed of his skills, but he knew that Omega as a whole needed to keep a low profile. In case the others with him didn't already know what he was planning, Logan turned fully towards those who had come along with him. Intensity in his eyes, Logan felt a wry smile find his lips. "Any objections to me trying to touch the barrier?" Really, it would be up to the people who were much more capable than him at protecting the group to decide, should his idea prove to be less than ideal.

Who: Maya, Ash, Theodore, any other Omega members who decide to show up
When: Midnight-ish
Where: The big magic wall surrounding the high school

After receiving the text alert from Teddy, it didn't take Maya long to move out. She'd been in her room, cleaning some of her lesser-used bladed weapons, but moments later was throwing on a leather jacket over her t-shirt to hide the shoulder holster she always wore. Not only would the warmth be welcome (were constitution or no, she was originally from a tropical country and would always prefer the warmer weather to the cold she'd experienced most frequently since leaving), but it would also hide the guns as well as the knives strapped to her forearms. The place was surely crawling with police, so their poking around would have to be as circumspect as possible.

She was in her car - glad to have it back after Logan's side trip - when Teddy's second text came through, and she waited the requisite moment for him to join her. After that, it was a short drive to the school, and Maya parked the Mustang out of the way and out of sight of the gathered emergency services. She got out, waiting for Teddy to do the same before using the keyfob to lock it. She texted Ash, scenting the air as she looked around.

We're here. Where are you?

On the highway to hell

Who: OMEGA, bitches
When: Mid-morning
Where: About an hour outside Scarlet Oak to start
What: Arrival

Maya hadn't been pleased to give up her ride to Logan as he left to investigate the wolf situation, but it had made the most sense - the smallest vehicle went to the single person departing. He couldn't take the equipment van, not if he wanted to give Teddy an aneurysm, and it didn't make sense for one man to take the SUV and leave a car that sat four at best for the six of them. So for the long trip to Michigan, Maya was stuck driving the equipment van. But though she missed the power and handling of her usual vehicle, it couldn't be helped.

They'd been driving for most of the night, which Maya tended to prefer. Her night vision meant she didn't have any visibility problems, and there was less traffic to negotiate - which meant fewer people who might notice their passing. The last stop had been a rest station a few hours back, and a protein bar and cup of coffee had meant she was good to keep going for a while longer. As it happened, though, the GPS mounted in the car showed they were just over an hour from their final destination.

Picking up the two-way radio sitting on the dash, she hit the button to radio the SUV that Ash was driving, with Ice and Maxine for company. Teddy and Slevin had drawn the short straws to ride with her. "Exit for 94 coming up in two miles. That should take us straight into town."
