Who: Lily and Charlotte (and Anna, Charlie’s familiar)
When: Late morning
Where: Charlie’s house
Charlotte had not gone to school this week. On Monday morning her alarm had gone off, and she’d gotten out of bed... only to break down all over again and climb right back in. A few weeks ago missing school and shattering her perfect attendance rating would have seemed like a big deal. Now it felt like nothing. So what. Her mother tried to cheer her up, and tell her that time healed all wounds... but Charlotte just couldn’t face the world yet. She dreaded going back to school. She dreaded explaining things to her friends. So she stayed in bed. When her mom spoke, Charlotte had no reply. She stayed in bed and waited for the world to hurt less.
Yesterday her mother had been worried enough to stay home from work. Early in the afternoon she'd come in to tell Charlotte about what had happened at school, and Charlotte had gotten out of bed to head downstairs and watch the news. Isadora had been encouraged by that, but when it was over, Charlotte simply got up and went back to bed. In the morning, her mom told her that the homecoming parade had been canceled. That should have bothered her.
S.O.A.R. in Unity was going to have their own float, and she'd been working really hard on it. Now she took the news with a shrug of her shoulder. Big deal. She sighed, and curled up closer to Anna. Before Anna had been her familiar, she'd been her beloved pet. When Charlotte's father had died, Anna had refused to leave her side. When Charlotte had come home from school crying because the other kids made fun of her, Anna was the one she poured her heart out too. Their surroundings may have changed, but the routine did not. Since Charlotte had come home from the hospital last week, Anna had not left her side. The spaniel stayed quiet, and was simply
there. She didn't try and force Charlotte to talk, and Charlotte appreciated it more than words could say.
