given this place or the zombies I'd take the zombies anyday

Who: Locke, Cole, Jack, Angeline, Bunny
When: it's a mystery!
Where: Night of the Living Deadville

Bunny could still smell them. Above the sawdust and the sweat the scent of the walking dead was still strong in her nostrils, even though she'd been back for hours. Going back inside had been a very hard thing for Bunny to do, but she kept her promise. After what she judged to be an hour, she returned. She was able to do this only by facing the truth - that even if she and Duchess McNuggets teamed up in full hybrid forms, they could never take them all. Bunny had gone back to the house and worked her ass off, privately glad that fortifying the house left little room for conversation. But unfortunately, something unexpected had happened. They'd finished. There was absolutely nothing left to do. Bunny had spent the better part of an hour going room to room and re-examining every last possible entrance, and every single one was well covered. There was nothing left to do now but wait - and there were still hours until the zombies actually reached the house.

Sighing, Bunny headed into the living room. She walked to the nearest couch-shaped-thing, ripped off the white sheet revealing the couch below, and fell into the cushions. She propped an arm behind her head, and kicked her legs up on the arm of the couch. She was actually kind of hungry, but not sure she wanted to admit to that just yet. It would have made sense to sleep, but she'd never be capable of that in a million years. Looking up at the ceiling and wondering how they'd manage to get through this (mainly without killing Angeline) she mumbled, "And now we wait."

i used to think take them as they come, without hesitations.

Who: Zachary and Maxine.
Where: Bargain Books.
When: Mid-Morning.

The last few days things had moved swiftly for Zach, he'd thought about finding new premises for his store but hadn't found anywhere suitable so he'd looked into the cost of getting the tree removed and repairs done. Surprisingly the cost of getting that all done wasn't as much as he'd expected so he'd made the necessary arrangements and now the work was being carried out. The last two days had been spent boxing up any stock that might be damaged by the removal of the tree and only once he was sure everything was safely tucked away had he allowed the work to begin.

Normally Zach wouldn't have been at the store with it being closed but he wasn't about to leave the keys to his business in the hands of the contractors. Not only that but he wanted to oversee the work and be on hand just in case they needed his input with anything. It had the bonus of getting him outside as well, fresh air always did the world of good even if it wasn't particularly nice weather at the moment. Zach had never really minded gloomy weather, it tended to reflect how he felt inside most of the time anyway. He might not look gloomy on the outside but Zach carried around a sadness that only the most observant people would ever pick up on. Thankfully most people weren't that observant and they took what they saw on the surface because he didn't want everyone he met to ask him why he looked so sad or what was wrong with him all the time.

Just because he had to be at the store though didn't mean that he had to be inside, he knew if he stayed inside he'd just get in the way and slow the work down so he'd taken a table and chair from inside and set himself up outside the front door. Sampson was asleep by his feet, the dog not bothered by the noise coming from inside but then that hardly surprised Zach, his faithful friend rarely flinched at loud noises. Zach was trying to read a book which he'd found lying on the table and was working on what must have been his tenth cup of coffee for the day. It was a good thing he had a higher than normal tolerance for caffeine or he'd have been buzzing by now.

this isn't how it goes in the stories

Who: Arwen and... her familiar?!
When: Early afternoon
Where: Arwen's home

It was Arwen's first weekend off in a while, and by Saturday morning she was more or less out of things to do. She'd called every clinic within driving distance, and every place seemed to have their fill of volunteers for the night of the full moon. When her phone rang and the voice on the other end asked if she was willing to come into the hospital on her night off, Arwen could have hugged them. Night shifts were crazy. Full moon night shifts? Were bedlam. Fantastic. Not a sarcastic fantastic, either. A real one.

Despite the rather gloomy weather, Arwen took her lunch on the covered porch overlooking the river. After eating she had leaned back in her patio chair, and had only meant to close her eyes for a minute. Sleep overcame her then, and she was only roused some time later by a strange huffing sound. Opening her eyes, Arwen had trouble making peace with what she was seeing. A dark horse was standing in the riverbed, staring up at her.

Wait, what? )

where is the sun, feel like a ghost this time.

Who: Sam and Jo.
Where: The Summers House.
When: Early afternoon.

Sam had never gotten in the habit of locking his door. It had never been something that was allowed in Montana, if his door was going to be locked it would be locked for him, and from the outside. Never from within. There were never any locks on the inside of the doors to the rooms in which he slept in Montana. It was something of an alien concept to him, locking a door behind him, and even when he used the bathroom in the Summers house he had to pause once he was inside and remind himself to do so. With his bedroom, though, it was another matter. There was a lock on the inside of the door, he had noticed it not long after he had been shown to the room for the first time but not once had he touched it. There had been times in the middle of the night when he had thought about it but a tight and knotted sense of anxiety had settled in so quickly in the wake of such thoughts that he had dismissed them almost immediately. Locking his door was bad. Wrong. He wasn’t supposed to do that.

So it was that the door was unlocked, even when he went through the process of changing from the clothes he wore for bed. It was early afternoon, a little past lunch he suspected from the scents drifting up from the first floor of the house, and he’d overslept. That made him feel uneasy as well, just one more thing that wouldn’t have been permitted with his birth pack. Some mornings they would jump up and down on the floor above where he slept to wake him with the thumping and rattling and the shower of dust that would rain down from the ceiling of the basement. Those had been the gentler awakenings, the ones in which the pack had kept their distance. Not all mornings had been like that.

Sam’s night had been a rough one and the tangled sheets on the bed were evidence enough of that, twisted and rumpled from the kind of motions one might associate with nightmares. He’d had them, he knew, he’d woken with a tight fear in his chest and a sense of dread that had, at one point, chased him right out of the bed and into the corner of the room, watching the door in the dark, waiting for danger to storm right through it. He’d fallen asleep that way for a while, only crawling back into the bed when he’d dozed off sitting upright and startled himself awake when he almost lost his balance. The rest of the night had passed just as fitfully and all through the morning he’d tried to catch up on lost sleep only to be denied the rest that would have kept him from feeling as groggy and disoriented as he did then.

For some reason he couldn’t figure out which way his shirt was supposed to go. Standing in the middle of the room at the foot of the unmade bed with his pants pulled on and fastened and his upper torso uncharacteristically bare he struggled to solve the unexpected puzzle he held in his hands. Was it inside out? Twisted? His brain was so fogged up that he couldn’t tell, so clouded by the lack of sleep that he didn’t hear footsteps approaching his room from outside in the hall.

Always be cageing

Who: Jo, Drina and Marco
Where: Ballard House
When: Early morning

It used to be that the promise of an upcoming full moon was a happy, exciting time for Jo. It was like a homecoming, even if she had never really left home in the first place, because while she was never anyone but herself that was never quite so as when she was in wolf form, running with her people underneath the moonlight. Knowing that this full moon fundamental pieces of the pack would be missing broke her heart. It was going to feel lacking, incomplete, like the full moon was a ritual she would not be able to fulfil this time. Not to mention that just thinking of running under the moon without her brother and sister along made Jo feel sick.

She had not slept last night, and hardly so the past few. For all the strong face and helpful disposition that Jo tried to show others, she was very much on her last nerve at this point. Of course she kept on going because there was nothing else to do, but every once in a while she had had to stop herself and calm down before the tears came in full force. As quickly as it would come, it would go, and Jo would return to whatever was occupying her mind at the time. Right now she could only be thankful for the opportunity to help other weres at the William Ballard House; for Jo there was really no better way to heal herself than by helping others.

There was an edge in the air around her that made Jo's hairs stand in the back of her neck. Everyone was nervous, herself included. If she hadn't done a good enough job then these people wouldn't be safe, and neither would those they might encounter. Still, Jo could only trust herself to do her best to keep that from happening. Clipboard in hand, she assigned people to cages, making sure no one who had asked was left without one. It sounded rough, sure, but when Jo saw the relief in people's eyes she realized they, too, knew there wasn't a better option.

We've seen some change but we're still outsiders

Who: Cat and Lark
When: Afternoon
Where: Streets of Scarlet Oak, near the woods/W Pennington

Lark had been in Scarlet Oak for a while now, and had been lucky enough to be set up with a job fairly quickly. It was housekeeping for the Budget Lodge, which she'd been okay with, but she quickly learned that their terms of housekeeping were... well, extremely lax. Some of the rooms were downright gross, and she'd been yelled at by her manager today for taking too long on one room. It doesn't have to be immaculate, the man had barked at her. Just put things back in order and wipe down the major stains. Lark did what she was told, but she left work feeling like she could shower for an hour and still not be clean enough. The walk back to the shelter helped her cool off, mentally, but she was already wondering how hard it would be to get in at the Hotel di Sei Ali. The idea that it was a 'supernatural resort' didn't even bother her at this point. At least she would probably not feel so much like she was going to catch a disease from every room she entered. She'd be able to take a bus there, too.

Truthfully, Lark didn't mind the walk. Once she crossed the river and got into the more populated part of town there was a bus stop which would take her most of the rest of the way back, but she didn't always bother. Today she might. She'd never really worried about the full moons back home, but the world was going crazy. She felt a stab of anger at her uncle for bringing her brother and sister here. This place was crazy. Sighing heavily, Lark jumped over a puddle at the side of the road, eyes scanning the trees as she walked. This place was crazy, but it was pretty. She had to at least give it that.

TIME UPDATE

DATE: Sunday, October 4, 2009

BIRTHDAYS: None

WEATHER: Overcast and gloomy, though temperatures are supposed to be rising over the next few days.

EVENTS: The full moon is tonight, and the crowd gathered outside the school is particularly emotional today. Word is that the authorities are trying to determine whether or not there are any bitten weres inside the school, but unfortunately that information is simply impossible to get without a family member stepping forward. Unsurprisingly, the registered were debate is heavy in the news. Pressure is being put on lawmakers to pass a law that would require all weres to register with the government. It's not the first time this idea has been put forward, either. All in all, tonight's full moon in Scarlet Oak is a very somber experience. Of course the authorities are still offering aid to any bitten were that needs a place to lock up for the night, and there's always Ballard House to turn to for help if needed.

Inside the school, two groups are advancing today. Details behind a cut. )
