Who: Ash and Maya
When: 9 am-ish
Where: Omega's motel
Maya hadn't meant to fall asleep. One would assume that's what was done overnight, and in most cases, she tried to grab a few hours. But every now and again, it wasn't worth the price she'd pay in nightmares, and she used the quiet hours of the deep night to get things done while keeping quiet watch on her teammates. Last night was supposed to be one of those nights. She'd set up a number of her weapons that needed cleaning, laid out with military precision on towels atop the cheap wood of the motel desk. It was a job that would take up hours - or at least, would have if sleep hadn't claimed her so suddenly that she didn't even have time to feel it before she was gone.
And what came next was anything but restful.
It was a night of blood and pain, revisiting sharp heartache she'd spent the last decade and a half trying to blunt. And immediately after, sharp, vivid horror that wasn't hers. Madness, blood, a delicate child's flayed body. It was horrifying even to her, despite the years she'd spent hunting, and when she woke up, it wasn't with her usual quick alertness. For a moment, Maya wasn't sure where she was, body struggling for a fight or flight mechanism that just wasn't coming. It took her nearly a full moment to realize she was in the hotel, neck stiff from the night she'd spent slumped over the desk. With a grunt, she pushed herself upright, finding the effort much harder than it should have been.
The grogginess persisted for a few minutes, but by the time she had the crappy motel coffee going, it was beginning to fade. Maya dressed quickly - which was when that delayed fight or flight response hit. At least, that's what it felt like - heart racing, breath short, every sense on alert for a danger that wasn't there. Maya tried to ignore the shaking in her limbs, and after gulping a cup of the crappy coffee - black, scalding hot - headed for the motel's subpar gym. She needed to stretch and then she needed a good, long run.
