Make sure you don't tell on me

Who: Kristen and OPEN
When: Around 3:00 p.m.
Where: Elementary school playground

Kristen wasn't supposed to be on the swing, tilted back so far that her hair was brushing the ground while she had a clear, if upside-down, view of the brick wall of the school. A school that she'd been in a few hours ago and would be in again the next morning. Because that was what kids did; they went to school every day except Saturday and Sunday. After school they were supposed to go back home to their families. Or, in Kristen's case, they were supposed to go to the daycare center for a few hours until their big sister got done with work so that she could pick her up and maybe take her out for ice cream. Kristen snorted at herself when she thought that, knowing it wasn't true. She was still grounded and even if she'd gone to the daycare like she was supposed to there wouldn't have been any ice cream. She'd just have been stuck there and that little boy who was always shouting would've torn up the drawing she'd been working on for Nikita. She'd seen it when she'd been drifting off near the end of school, chin propped in her hand as she gazed out the window and tried to find shapes in the clouds since the teacher wasn't talking about anything interesting. Even her earrings had stopped being fun to poke at around lunch-time.

So it'd just made good sense to her that she shouldn't go to the daycare. Instead, she'd waited until the buses and most of the cars in the parking lot were gone, and then she'd snuck into the playground and taken up residence on one of the swings. If she'd stopped to think about it then she'd have probably been afraid and she'd have run all the way to Little Miracles. Because every time that she wandered away from where she was supposed to be she ended up meeting someone scary. First there'd been that lady who had said things about breaking bones and little birds and then there'd been the vampire with red eyes who'd almost killed Mitzi. But Kristen wasn't thinking about any of those things. She was thinking about how much more interesting everything looked when she was hanging upside down, and about whether her drawing would just get ruined another day if it didn't today, and then she thought about how mad Missy was going to be with her. "I don't care," Kristen told the wood chips underneath of her, eyes briefly focused on one that was bigger and darker than the others. "She always finds reasons to be mad anyhow, so I might as well give her another one." Or maybe she'd leave the playground in time to meet Missy outside of the daycare so that she didn't know she was there... unless one of the workers went and called her. That wouldn't be very nice of them. Kristen's smile turned into a frown before she shrugged it away in favor of watching a particularly large ladybug as it plodded along from chip to chip. Focusing there kept her from acknowledging the tingle in the back of her mind that would've made her wonder how mad Missy was going to be this time.

It might finally involve that tracking bracelet she'd threatened her with the last time.
