TIME UPDATE

DATE: Saturday, August 1, 2009.

BIRTHDAYS: Alex

WEATHER: Oh yes, the storms have descended on Scarlet Oak. Sure, it’s nowhere near as bad as the rest of the state is getting right now, but it’s still pretty miserable. Have fun out there.

EVENTS: Yesterday’s political talks are still on-going, with the argument heating up. The next full moon is only a few days (August 6th), and obviously, that just couldn’t come at a worse time. Things haven’t cooled down in the area at all, and in the local news media, a survey is printed on what some local business owners and city workers think should be done. Predictably, things are pretty evenly split, with the majority leaning towards what is right and good. Alarmingly, the news reports that there were several anonymous cases who believed the police ought to have the right to simply raid the houses of known weres on the night of the full moon, trying to find a snake. Of course, such a thing would be highly illegal and an invasion of privacy and no one with any official power is proposing such an idea. Still, just the fact that the thought is in the minds of locals is enough to make some uneasy. Maybe that forced-register isn’t such a far-fetched idea after all…

Whether poorly timed or not, the full moon is this coming Thursday. And in the case of the last two full moons, one can see that Ann Arbor (and with it, Scarlet Oak) is falling into a pretty good routine. As with the last two, advertisements encouraging bitten-weres to contact a designated shelter to lock up for the night abound at every corner, and on every radio and local TV station. Once again, all area jails are setting aside cells – that can be booked in advance. And for the second time, Bram Moriarty has launched a massive campaign, offering free cages to anyone who needs one.

And with so much emphasis on bitten weres finding a safe haven on the night of the full moon, the timing is quite appropriate for some more bright news. All local news medias are reporting the launch of a unique new halfway house in Scarlet Oak: Ballard House. Represented locally in association with Joining Hands, Ballard House is one of the first of its kind stateside: a shelter for any supernatural in need of aid, be it in understanding their abilities – or simply getting over a rough patch in their lives. On top of offering free room and board, they offer training, counseling – and perhaps most importantly: protection. The house (which is actually a mansion on Scarlet Oak’s N Appleblossom Road) is, naturally, being heavily picketed at the moment, but with the massive gates and privacy fence, it’s a little hard to tell from the inside. Ballard House is also advertising as having a safe place to lock up for the night of the full moon.

In much lighter local news, the first page of Scarlet Oak’s arts section of the newspaper is discussing ‘Scarlet Oak’s own mystery model’. The September issue of Vogue hits the stands this week, and making big news in the fashion world is an editorial for N & C Designs – which is of course fronted by a Scarlet Oak resident (not to mention general head bitch in charge), Whisper Charlton. The editorial is entitled ‘The Fashionable Dead’, and features some rather haunting images of a young model covered in stitches and scars. Charlton has been interviewed about the photos (which are causing the most glorious buzz), and is quoted as saying that the shots were inspired by the Light of May and all of the subsequent events that followed. She goes on to say that she used an unknown model, a local from the town that houses Heme, since there was such a mess there. That’s right, a model gracing the pages of Vogue is from Scarlet Oak! In Vogue she’s credited as Talia Row. Hmm…

If you have something you feel warrants a mention in the next time update, please let the mods know!
