The question stuns him. It throws him back into Consistory, just before he laid down the Cardinalate. He had heard a voice that day. It had jolted him so much that someone had felt called to ask him whether he was well. By all means, he had snarled. Do not occupy yourself. Pray, continue.

It had sounded like a death rattle, a wet soggy cough. Then, a soft pained laugh. I can no longer help you. I am sorry, Cesare. So sorry.

"What voice," he bristles. "Some Don Camillo & Peppone voice? Gesù telling me off in a humble village church? A voice of reason, or one ringing with compassion? Or am I confusing that with pity?" He snorts. "A voice offering sound counsel? No, no." He shakes his head as if there were water in his ears. "See, I hear lots of things. And most of them don't make sense."

You mean, you didn't hear them when you needed them.

Whatever.

Teyla. She can sneak up on me and lets me know, quietly, in silky tones, when she's about to kick my ass. That or she wants me to see that her son, Torren, is finally asleep.

Normally, I can hear the voices of my loved ones and personal spirit slaves most clearly in my ears. Granted I can hear the voices of the weaker spirits who clamour for attention, but they are not strong and are easy to dismiss.

This evening, however, I have put them all from my mind and am concentrating on one voice. It is weak, but soon the dybbuk will become clear in my mirror and I shall seek him out. There is a task I have for one such as him, and I will be awaiting the words, 'it is finished.'

You really do not know who and what we are, do you?

Very well, as I am in a generous mood -- you may thank the spirit of the season -- I shall tell you. I hear the voices of the Oracles blowing from beyond the veil of the dead. Their whispers are as music in my ears, for they whisper the future to me. The whisper of my Virtue, by right of the vitae of Caine; of the shining city of the Harbingers where I shall rest secure as the rest of the Kindred shall fall ans be swept as dust into the Vale of Gehenna; that I shall take up the shining Virtue of God and live eternally.

Now, it is time for you to prepare your soul to go forward and join the voices of the dead. I have my tithe to begin collecting for the next family supper. What? You did not think that I would let you live?

I am not feeling that generous.

I know who it is... It's Jack.

No one else whispers in my ear like that. And what he's saying... We shouldn't, but neither of us can help ourselves. He's telling me what he wants. And I'm thinking on ways to give him just that.

It was worse when Alison was still alive, then I felt the guilt, but now... now there's no one but us. Most of the time, at any rate. There's no one else to turn to and I know Jack uses that, but I can't say no. Whatever it is he whispers in my ear, he can have. I've never been able to say no to him. And he knows that.

It's got to stop, doesn't it?
