I Resist the Muses

"There are people I would take a bullet for and people I would like to put a bullet in."

Oh, no kidding. No fucking kidding, man. There are some people -- former bosses -- whose heads I would dearly love to put a bullet in. I'd do it without hesitation and with a smile on my face. The men and women behind Neo Ark deserve it, I tell you. Or at least the ones who went into it knowing what was going on, knowing of the cloning experiments and the genetic manipulation and what the goals of the project were. Some of them, the low-level scientists and researchers... they only knew parts of it.

But by the same token, there are people I would take a bullet for without even thinking about it. Those people are few and far between, but they're out there. Mostly Eve and Aya. Especially Aya.

How could I not be willing to take a bullet for her after everything we went through? After everything she went through before we met? She went through some of the most horrifying experiences imaginable and yet she came out with the same fierce and loyal disposition she had before.

And I love her for it.

That depends. Am I reliving it so I can change it or am I reliving it so I can just experience it again? Because those are two completely different answers, my friend.

If it's just so I can experience it, then I'd have to say the day that I passed my PI exam. I did it myself, without any of the dubiously-offered "help" certain government officials offered me. The accomplishment was mine and mine alone.

If it's so I can change it? I'd go back to that moment in the Ark, when everything fell apart and I lost my leg. I wouldn't change the end result, Aya and Eve being all right. No, I wouldn't change that. But if I could find a way to work things so that I wouldn't have something fall on my leg and damage it? I'd be all over that in a heartbeat.

But really, aside from those, there are few moments in my life I'd relive. The past is the past, the future is the future, and I'd rather just get on with living my life.

Who am I? Fuck all if I know.

I'm Kyle Joseph Madigan. Thirty years old. Amputee. Speaking of which, dear God is a prosthetic leg a pain in the ass. Even if it is top of the line. Amazing what you can get when you hold certain things against the government.

But anyway. That's not who I am. Who I am is a hard-ass PI with too many demons to exorcise and not enough courage to try.
