Hoping is how the impossible can be possible after all.

Though I expected as much to be true, it's still somewhat disheartening to have confirmation that the "traditional" wedding anniversary gifts (beyond the original 25th silver and 50th gold) were created by the American National Retail Jeweler Association. Ah, commercialism.

(For the curious, 25 and 50 likely originated in medieval Germany. If a couple lived to celebrate those anniversaries, the wife was presented with a wreath of the requisite material by her friends and neighbors. No mention of the husband in this tradition is noted.)

Five years is "wood." Which the internet tells me means that I have to get you something artfully laser engraved with our names.

Hello, sweet friends! I usually keep these posts to Instagram, but if you haven't followed us yet or don't love social media, I didn't want you to miss out. If you don't know me yet, I'm Calliope Corvin and I own For Goodness Bakes which is downtown next to The Dreamery!

For our first Valentines Day in Dunhaven with a storefront, we decided to go all out. Normal Friday hours, as previously announced, have shifted. We will be open today at 9am and I'm continuing to bake until NOON to keep us in cake as long as possible. Regardless of sales, we close at 4pm because I have a sweet date with my own Valentine. 😘

Remember if you put in a custom order for today or this weekend, they need to be picked up before close at 4pm. Even if you didn't order ahead, we have plenty of selections for you to come by and get something for your Honeybee! Or, you know, if you just want to Treat Yo Self. 😋

Tell me if you want more raspberry champagne or chocolate covered strawberry cupcakes! (Yes, you do have to be 21+ to buy the strawberry champagne because they actually have a little something-something in them.) Cast votes here or on Instagram to say what you want more of! Voting stops at 10am.

Here are some sneak peeks of some things available at the store today. Whole cakes and cupcake bouquet quantities are very limited. Get here asap if you want one! That red velvet is amazing, but I think the six layer strawberry buttercream dream has my heart. 🤯🤤 It has layers of real strawberry, strawberry preserves, and chocolate ganache because why not?

January term ends on the 29th. In theory, this should be no surprise if you've been studying for your final.

Someone a great deal cooler than me informed me that a lot of you use Instagram to communicate. As someone with a perpetual allergy to social media of any kind (read: snobbery), what will having an Instagram account provide me that having a social media "journal" on this platform can't?

More specifically, I left Facebook due to my inability to keep myself from making acquaintances' great aunts cry over their terrible political opinions. Am I going to have to fight any of you on Instagram? Am I going to be approached by someone working from home who thinks I'd be a great fit for the bottom segment of a pyramid scheme? How are the privacy settings? For those of you still in school: is Instagram sufficiently uncool enough that none of my students are on it?

Thank you for any information you can provide.

For those at the University of Dunhaven trapped in waitlist purgatory, my current available courses are as follows:

Linguistics 101 - an introduction to the scientific study of language with specific focus on the core areas of morphology, syntax, semantics, pragmatics, phonetics and phonology.
M, W, F: 8:00am - 9:00am

Linguistics 210 - Introduction to cross-linguistic phenomena and methods of analysis in phonology, including phonological categories, features, alternations, and phonological models for capturing related generalizations; as well as syllable structure, tone and stress, and morphologically conditioned phonology.
T, TH: 1:00pm - 2:15pm

Linguistics 232 - Examines different languages in terms of their historical origin and their cognitive properties with a particular focus on "dead" and endangered languages. What causes language endangerment and death, and why does it matter? Can dying languages be revitalized? How are thought, identity, and culture influenced by language, and vice versa?
F: 5:30pm-7:30pm (I'm as thrilled about this as you undoubtedly are.)
As a reminder to my (current) students, the last day that you can drop the spring semester without penalty is February 29th.

To everyone else - hi, I'm Theo Salazar. Teacher, obviously, relatively new in town and still trapped by cardboard boxes. I'm likely to die in here. You have my niece to thank for getting me online.

I like to go on AskReddit when I'm supposed to be writing and just read the stories that people share about themselves on certain threads. Most of them are completely made up and it's obvious, but I can appreciate a good fantasy and am not here to judge. That being said, I saw a good one today that had some great responses and as I'm still getting to know people here in town, I thought it might be the ultimate in ice breaker questions.

So, the question is: what was your biggest "fuck it, I'm going to do it" moment?

Mine is probably obvious, in that it was sending a manuscript that certainly needed work to a bunch of publishers and just hoping for the best. I got very lucky, but it also sold me on taking risks. I'm not always good at it, but I try.

Anyway. You next, please. Feel free to even reply anonymously, if you'd prefer.

I'm really sorry to even ask this, but are you able to cast Mending, by any chance?

[...] Actually, I'm not really sure if that's going to help in this case, even if you can.

I accidentally destroyed my dresser. I sort of hid it under a blanket in my room and it's entirely not subtle, so if we could sort of steer Mom away from there for the remainder of the time she's here, that would be ideal. I don't really want to have to explain how it got that way to her.

And just like that, the semester is over. Congratulations, fellow teachers. We've survived.

Of course, we all know that every student will forget the entirety of the last four months in the time off, but for now, let's just enjoy our well-earned respite.
