January term ends on the 29th. In theory, this should be no surprise if you've been studying for your final.

Someone a great deal cooler than me informed me that a lot of you use Instagram to communicate. As someone with a perpetual allergy to social media of any kind (read: snobbery), what will having an Instagram account provide me that having a social media "journal" on this platform can't?

More specifically, I left Facebook due to my inability to keep myself from making acquaintances' great aunts cry over their terrible political opinions. Am I going to have to fight any of you on Instagram? Am I going to be approached by someone working from home who thinks I'd be a great fit for the bottom segment of a pyramid scheme? How are the privacy settings? For those of you still in school: is Instagram sufficiently uncool enough that none of my students are on it?

Thank you for any information you can provide.

Instagram is owned by Facebook, so it's not like you're gaining anything in that regard (security, peace of mind, etc). I guess the benefit is more pictures rather than blocks of text. I don't use either, though, so don't use me as a guideline.

Then again, I've got professional reasons for staying off of global social media and the only reason I can use this is that it's localized.

I've read too many horror stories of people who slip up and get fired due to a picture someone tagged. Not that I lead a terribly exciting or controversial life, but it's something for any educator to consider.

Although reading between the lines, I'm guessing your professional reasons have nothing to do with education.

A lot of companies don't want you to represent them in a way that may give them bad press. Even if you don't think you're representing them at all. If your profile doesn't say where you work, you use a fake name, and never post anything that can come back to you or your job, you're probably fine.

Probably.

I've got certain levels of clearance that I have to abide by additional rules for, unfortunately.

There you go again, being vague. Does that typically work to arouse or quell invasive questions?

It doesn't work any better than "I could tell you, but then I'd have to kill you." With my line of work, even though I consider myself partially retired, means it's a bunch of stuff I can't talk about, but I can tell you that I can't talk about it.

I primarily use Instagram to post pictures of my cat. Your mileage may vary, however.

Animals are by far more interesting than my second cousin flooding Facebook with 72 pictures of her children eating spaghetti poorly.

I agree. I do not use Facebook, but that comes from not liking any of my family at all, really.

I've found that even if you like your family, spend too much time on Facebook and it's quickly remedied.

I'm on every social media platform - mostly out of necessity. Security aside (it's Eli's job to worry about that and even then ... well), having a platform I can use to speak directly to the people we help and impact is both an amazing thing that requires a very thick skin.

And just assume 90% of your students are on there.

Every social media platform? Actual chills.

I think I'll take a page out of Chase's book and post nothing but photographs of my cat.I suppose I'll need a cat for that.

I'm the hands-on CEO.

The shelter can help you there. I post a lot of feminist memes and promoting water conservation charities. On twitter, we mostly spend all of the time roasting Elon Musk.

I have a public Twitter and Instagram and a private Facebook, though I don't know when the last time was I logged into the latter. Usually when I do, all I see are recipes my mom has tagged me in the last several months.

As for the former, I use them to engage with my readers, mostly. It makes it a unique experience compared to some, but I don't think the opportunity to connect is all that different. I prefer Instagram, though, because I follow a lot of animal accounts and they make me happy.

I quit social media a few years ago. Needed a fresh start. I'm making an effort to remember to use this, but it's an easy habit to get into.

I may give Instagram a try if only to keep on top of Dunhaven events happening. I would rather eat rat poison than bother with Twitter, however.

Honestly, I don't know how much I would use it were it not for my work. I have, however, met some wonderful people through social media, which is nice as I am much worse at meeting new people in person.

Twitter is a bit of the worst, so I cannot blame you. I mostly stick to my little corner of dropping fake spoilers, retweeting fanart, and stalking shipping war threads. It seems safest there.

I got an Instagram account because my wife uses social media to promote her business (a bakery), and I liked seeing pictures of the things she posted. Some of my students are on it, yes, but I keep things well locked down, away from anyone I don't personally know. Calliope's is a bit different, since she has to have a public audience.

I've acquainted myself with some of your wife's work in the last few weeks. Wonderful.

But yes - I have a feeling that privacy and a discerning eye will be the way to go if I choose to join the Instagram world.
